At the NBCUniversal press sessions at Monday’s TCA, not one but two of the new series introduced here are re-imaginings of British shows. In the morning, it was the comedy Free Agents. This afternoon, it was the Maria Bello starrer Prime Suspect, a re-invention of the critically acclaimed British procedural drama starring Helen Mirren as Jane Tennison, a homicide detective with a dark side. This time around, England is New York City, and Maria Bello is Jane Timoney, a brilliant “bad cop” disliked by her squad. She’s all tough and stuff. At age 44, Bello joins the ranks of glamorous middle-aged actresses who have found a place for themselves in TV’s procedural dramas.
Also like the producers of Free Agents, co-executive producer/writer Alexandra Cunningham said the show would be a little less dark than seems to suit British tastes: While the New Jane drinks like the Old Jane, the story lines won’t delve into alcoholism. New Jane smokes like Old Jane — but in the USA in 2011, she’s trying to quit. (Bello also confessed that she is a smoker.) Said Cunningham: “The thing that makes this different from other procedurals is the humor,” which she adds will harken to the style of Hill Street Blues and Barney Miller. She added, however, that there would be plenty of procedure in this procedural, making sure “there’s enough for the fans, but have a lot of fun with Maria and her personal life.” Co-executive producer Peter Berg was a little more blunt: “Let’s satisfy people like my sister, who loves procedural dramas, with a really gruesome murder at the beginning.”

I’m looking forward to Prime Suspect and I like Maria Bello a lot. The teasers look good. That said… this seems nothing like the original. How do they get the nerve to call it Prime Suspect? What a rip off. (and I know they have the rights, that’s not what I mean).
How is Prime Suspect if there won’t be a storyline about her drinking?
At Least this will be a character driven proceedural.
I was big fan of original PBS series I wonder if they cover that if this series run
Why sanitize it? Sounds to be ‘Prime Suspect’ in name only. Hope it doesn’t turn out like the ‘Cracker’ remake.
I wouldn’t call Maria Bello middle aged. Sheesh. Great under appreciated actress.
I love her. And if 44 ain’t middle aged I don’t know what is. It doesn’t diminish her supreme hotness, it only highlights the fact that being in your 40′s doesn’t necessarily mean a face full of botox and a drawer full of spanx.
I saw the pilot. Bello is terrific and the way it is shot harkens back to NYPD Blue where Cunningham got her start. I hear they also have Mike Sheehan, a renowned homicide NYC detective on board as a writer consultant to keep it real. I am looking forward to this show and hope NBC gives it a chance to find its audience. Bob, give your new series time to breathe, don’t fall into the cancel after 5 bs that has become common!
No matter how good it is, it’s always going to have Mirren’s shadow cast over it. I don’t care what anyone says it’s the best performance of a female detective. ever.
I think Mario Bello is a fine and under-appreciated actress.
The idea of Americanizing PRIME SUSPECT is HORRIBLE. What is it with the promos of face-time with Bello while she looks tough, wears a stupid hat and glares at the screen ? Are they hoping will will be turned on by a woman in a man’s hat who looks tough ? If so,then it’s not working. If they are going for the Frank Sinatra vibe -that’s not working either.
Much ado about nothing. Not a fan.
Has the ‘New Idea Factory’ closed down?
These American Shows milk these ideas for 5-8 seasons until they are dead. What is wrong with savouring the 6 GENIUS Episodes of ‘Free Agents’. Who is going to replace Anthony Head?
I’m skeptical about a Prime Suspect Remake but Bello is STUNNING and is very talented.
As a huge fan of the English version, this whole thing almost seems sacrilegious. Couldn’t they have just called it something new? They couldn’t even keep the main character’s name. It sounds like the only thing the two series have in common is that the head character is a female detective who isn’t loved by her peers. I don’t think there’s any point in duplicating the British series with American accents, but giving it the same title undermines the original.
I saw a clip of this show and calling it Prime Suspect seems beyond absurd. The only thing the two seem to have in common is a police dept. It may be a great show, but calling it Prime Suspect was just a marketing shortcut.
Why do a remake of a show that is so indelible in the minds of viewers with Helen Mirren? “co-executive producer/writer Alexandra Cunningham said the show would be a little less dark than seems to suit British tastes.” Then it is not and should not be called PRIME SUSPECT, folks. Maybe “The Americanization of Jane”?
Um, isn’t there already a show about a tough as nails female detective in her 40′s who begins the series unliked by her colleagues. And with lots of humor to go along with the brutal murders. It’s called The Closer.
This is a really great show. I love the BBC one, and I love this pilot. Give it a chance, let it be itself, like The Office, and enjoy.
