EXCLUSIVE: ABC Will End ‘Desperate Housewives’ In May 2012 After 8th Season
This morning ABC officially announced what Deadline readers already knew: that this coming season will be the last for veteran Desperate Housewives, which, along with Lost, turned ABC’s fortunes around in the fall of 2004. “It is an iconic show; we are so proud of it,” ABC entertainment president Paul Lee said. “I just wanted to make sure that the show that put the network on the map had its victory lap and had a chance to build a great final arc.” Lee was then joined by Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry. “I think the only thing harder than creating a hit show is to know when to end it,” he said. “It’s something that has weighed on my mind for some time. I’m well aware of people who have overstayed their welcome, and I just didn’t want that to happen to us. I wanted to go out while the network still thought it was a viable series and while it still did well in the ratings; I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible.”
According to the network’s press release, the upcoming “Season Eight of Desperate Housewives will roll out
in a way that is accessible even to viewers who may have lapsed in their viewing, and be all the richer and more rewarding to the series’ loyal fans.” Cherry elaborated that the “mystery of what’s going on in the final season harkens back to the first season,” to “the roots of the Mary Alice mystery,” which kicked off the series seven years ago. “It feels right that that would be the storyline that would take us out.” As a result, I hear that Brenda Strong, who narrates the series as Mary Alice but has only made a handful of appearances on the show, may get more screen time this season. Asked whether Nicollette Sheridan’s character Edie Britt will make a return, Cherry, who is being sued by the actress over her termination from the show, made a pause before responding, “I don’t know how I would do that, but I have an idea for the last episode where I want to pay homage to everyone who has been on the show.”
Cherry, who said he had considered both an eight- and nine-season run for the show, described the reaction of the cast members to the news of the show’s end as “bittersweet” with “a touch of shock.” He ruled out the possibility of a Desperate Housewives spinoff, though he admitted that, in an emotional phone conversation with star Eva Longoria over the past two days, he told her, “I’m just going to put you in a van and have you solve mysteries,” prompting Lee to interject, “Bought! Done!” “The truth is, I thought about that a lot,” Cherry said about the possibility of spinning off Housewives. “I have had a lot of success doing that mix of a soap, a drama and mystery with Desperate Housewives after writing half-hour sitcoms for 15 years. Now Hallelujah is such a different animal. I’m trying to go places I haven’t gone before. That’s why I won’t do a spinoff and the things you see from me will be very different.” As for Hallelujah, which Cherry is now redeveloping, “I did a pilot, half of it was terrific, half of it wasn’t,” he said. He also gave credit to former ABC topper Steve McPherson, who “saved my life, saved my career” by picking up Desperate Housewives script after everyone else in town had passed on it. This sucks, one less none reality show to watch, and I detest reality shows. Don’t put one of those things on to replace “Desperate Housewives.” I won’t watch reality nonsense.
8 years is a pretty nice run. The timing is right. Now they can give it a proper send off.
“..I wanted to go out while the network still thought it was a viable series and while it still did well in the ratings; I wanted to go out in the classiest way possible.”
Too late for that. The ratings are in the toilet. And that’s because the show has become stale and painfully redundant. It hurts to say that, because I use to love this show. They should of gone out after season 6 when they were still somewhat relevant. THAT would have been “classy.” Guess who over stayed their welcome?
Why did Steve McPherson pick up mostly crap but, every other once in a while pick up a great show like Desperate Housewives and Modern Family?
While McPherson spearheaded Desperate Housewives while he was head of the old Touchstone Television (ABC Studios now) it was ABC heads Lloyd Braun and Susan Lyne that actually picked up Desperate Housewives along with Lost, before they were fired by Disney.
(Can’t believe I’m about to type this but…) To take us back… and in Disney’s defense, ABC had been doing HORRIBLY and Braun & Lyne though loved by many (okay perhaps Susan more than Lloyd) really were leading the network down the drain as were their department heads at the time. It is ironic though that right after those firings two shows that could – Desperate Housewives and Lost which yes they did pickup and their teams did develop – exploded. Let’s not forget also ABC’s different handling of how they spent their marketing dollars that year. Every part of the network just hit one out of the park and those worked. It was facinating – and also sad most executives involved no longer had a job at Disney/ABC. And they did turn ABC around bigtime – at the time.
Nice run + Syndie $$$. Good job girls!!!
That show hasn’t done anything classy from day one.
Sorry to hear the wives are coming to an end abc is going to have a tough time replacing it
Loved this show and have watched it since Day ONE, but its DEF time for it to go! He originally wanted to end this after 7 seasons, and he should have stuck to that. Anyways, hope it goes out with a bang!
That stinks. I love Desperate Housewives. I’ve laughed and cried since day one!
It’s been my guilty pleasure every Sunday night after my husband and kids go to bed. When it was steamy–so was my love life. My husband loved when I came to bed and woke him up after watching a steamy episode. Thanks alot for all the fun times. Please no “reality show” replacement. Those reality shows are for nit-wits!!
I certainly will NOT be watching if that’s your solution as a replacement show.
Don’t worry. ABC sucks at developing reality hits at least as badly as it sucks as developing scripted hits!
I Love this show i watched every single one. i wish it would never come to a end i love how it leaves you with excitment on every one. im going to be sad when its over. ya did good marc and paul.
“Ending classy?” Come on! You can’t be serious! The show jumped the shark years ago, the ratings are in the toilet, Marc Cherry slapped one of the stars and is now embroiled in a ugly, nasty trial… Sadly, we’ve moved way passed classy and have arrived at embarrassingly pathetic.
