Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA
.
After today’s TCA panel for NBC’s Prime Suspect, the series’ executive producer Peter Berg confirmed that a movie version/sequel to his critically acclaimed NBC/DirecTV drama series Friday Night Lights, which recently ended its five-season run, is in active development. The movie is on track and the script is being written, Berg said. “We’re very serious about trying to do it,” he said, with a goal of going into production next year. The project would be produced by Universal Pictures — the studio behind the 2004 movie starring Billy Bob Thornton — and Imagine, with Brian Grazer producing. It would feature the cast of the series led by Emmy nominees Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton.

So it’s a movie based on a tv show based on a movie based on a book?
I thought the series was pretty good and ended really well. Would I pay ten dollars to see the series end again more or less at the theatres……
…….uh no. My family agrees.
Put out a special DVD package or something but let the ending be what everyone remembers.
This smacks of milking a dry cow.
Now we just need a Broadway Musical
GOD NO!!!
leave it alone and it let it be what we remember as a solid ending!
It was free and now Universal wants to make fans PAY for it???
That’s just wrong. You suck Universal if u make a movie at this stage of the story and if you go along with this Mr. Berg then you’ve lost a lot of respect from me and I’m sure many others!!!!
I would much rather have a special DVD package as another poster suggested than a movie in the theaters.
While I would be BEYOND thrilled to have everyone reunite on the big screen, I really don’t know if I can say goodbye to these characters again after that finale.
I cried 9 times
I loved the show, but the ending was so perfect that I don’t really see any reason to make a film.
Plus given its tepid ratings, I can’t imagine that a film will make any money.
Cosign. I love this show and they managed to do the almost impossible and end on perfect note. Please leave well enough alone.
+1
Give Landry some love! He gets shafted every time!
I heard the movie is going to be a thriller – Landry kills again!
If I remember correctly, there was a movie connected to Friday Night Lights. It was called Friday Night Lights!
I have to agree. I came into the show very late, and pretty much consider it one of my all time favorites. That ending was nearly perfect, and think that’s how it should end.
You guys are idiots, of course Peter Berg already knows there’s a movie “Friday Night Lights” that starred Billy Bob ’cause Peter was the one who directed that movie himself. Re-read the article this is a sequel/movie version of the TV show.
Plus his cousin wrote the book!!!
I think most people were kidding though. As a huge fan of the show, I think this is a bad idea, but I will still go see it if they make it just on the off chance they capture the magic again.
What will they call the movie? Saturday Playoff Game? Dillon: East Meets West? Seriously they have an issue there
……..Seriously? It will be called Friday Night Lights.
the music was an integral part of this series. Loved it, especially E.I.T.S.
you have got to be kidding me. they are gonna make a movie out of this and still no 24 movie? Gee thanks Brian.
Actually there is a 24 movie technically, most people just view it as a TV episode even when it was almost 2 hours long.
Its called Redemption
why make a movie based on a show that had hardly any viewership? I mean, I enjoyed it, but the potential audience is tiny. The budget had better be too. This thing will be a huge flop.
Isn’t that what people said about Firefly? That had a smaller audience, and even smaller mass appeal.
This is great news. And wouldn’t it be great if it won a bunch of Oscars, to boot. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose! (Well, we’ll get to that later.)
Enough already.
I would love there to be a movie!! I’m sure the great writers on this show can continue the storylines without ruining the ending we all love! As far as low viewship goes, the series is now on Netflix and is finding a new audience that never saw the original airings. Do a twitter search, tons of people are discovering it for the very first time! I never saw it on NBC but I’m addicted via Netflix! Besides, I miss them.
Rule #1 in Show Business: Always leave them wanting more.
I read the book. It was good.
The first film with Billy Bob. Was good too.
The NBC series. Some of the best TV EVER.
Please go out on top. Move on to something new and original.
If they make this film for 30-40 million, it will be a massive hit and make Uni some serious coin.
All of you haters are completely underestimating the audience for this. People have finally caught up to it on Netflix and Hulu and most of my friends watched the finale and were in tears. These characters are beloved and the fans will show up in droves to see a 2 hour story about the Taylors.
Do I think they wrapped up the series perfectly? Yes.
Would I stamp my feet and not go see the story continue if they make the movie? Hell no. I’ll be first in line.
Friday Night Lights is one of the 5-10 best drama series ever made. I have zero doubt they’ll knock a film adaptation of the TV show out of the park.
I think they should make a movie only because there were so many cliffhangers…Whatever happened to Smash Williams? It would’ve been nice to see him get drafted, have Street as an agent representing him, and Coach Taylor getting props for being there for Smash, just an idea….Landry was pushed aside, what happens to Vince playing for Dillon? What happens to Luke going to War? Matt & Julie: Are they married or just engaged? What happened to Lyla? The cast was amazing, hopefully they work something out? If not, FNL will always be one of my favorite shows……………
There’s something to be said for going out on top and leaving well enough alone. The series finale was some of the best television I’ve ever seen and that includes the Six Feet Under series finale. I just don’t see how it can be topped.
The book was outstanding. The television series were very good (I can rattle off 10 better dramas though from the past 20 years without much effort). The movie was terrible.
What more is there to say about the characters that has not already been said in the series? What additional themes need to be explored from the book that the series has not already explored?
At this point, you are making the film equivalent of After MASH.
I’m glad to read this and want to see the movie. You can see Landry and Devin in a band called Cowboy and Indian. They are getting some good fanbase. I hope they get a part in the new movie.
I have mixed feelings about this. But there’s no way it won’t at least be good. With Berg directing and Katims writing it’ll be at least as solid as FNL best episodes. As long as the script is on point I say go for it. And don’t think it won’t make money. FNL are an obsessive bunch, and it should get solid reviews to back it up.
It’s certainly a more reasonable adaptation than 24 or The Sopranos.
There are many ways to continue the story from the TV show. Tami and Coach Eric moves to Philadelphia for Tami’s job. What if Eric Taylor can coach a different team in Philadelpha introducing a slew of new characters for the new team. That could happen. I also want to see the marriage of Julie and Matt continue in Chicago. I also want to see Billy Riggins and Mindy get their twins for the movie. Of course, I want Tim Riggins to return as well. I think the movie deserves to happen.
I am a huge huge fan of this show but I’m really not sure about this one. They ended it so well. The original cast and the nuance they brought to their characters is what made this show. I’m just not sure I care to meet anymore new characters for 2 hours. We already met them all in seasons 4 and 5. (and loved them). I think Berg and Katims love this as much as we all do, which is why there is some hope it could be good. Of course I’ll be there to see it, but I’m still not sure its a good idea.
This was athe best show ever!I am so sad it’s over.I will go to anything they have, this deserves a movie or just bring it back to TV,PLEASE!!!Love, love love this show! The characters were awesome!!
Yay.
cant wait yay everyones wrong make new one i cried i didnt want it to end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When i first read that there was gonna be a movie, i threw up my hands and clicked my finger and quietly said, “yes” in my local coffee shop.
but then i read some of your post and it got me thinking that a film would completely unravel the great ending
spoiler
coach goes away to the northeast to support his wife
bringing back the entire cast to make a new movie would mean he would have to go back to dillon which would just suck
i would totally be down for watching a movie about his new team in the north east
but not going back down to texas
