Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline’s coverage of TCA.
Near the beginning of today’s TCA panel on the ABC Family series The Lying Game, executive producers Charles Pratt Jr and Gina Girolamo were asked about the obvious similarities between this new series and the CW’s Ringer, introduced earlier during TCA. The CW series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar in the dual role of two twin sisters. In The Lying Game, based on the book series by Sara Shepard (who also wrote the books behind the series Pretty Little Liars), it’s Alexandra Chando (As The World Turns) in the dual role of identical twin sisters from radically different backgrounds. Just like in Ringer, the sister from more humble beginnings takes the identity of her much richer sister. Said Pratt: “I actually haven’t seen it [Ringer], but I read the premise, and whether it helps us or hurts us I don’t know, we’ll leave it up to viewer. Essentially, the shows are very different. We’re not really thinking about it one way or another.” While both shows feature a mystery element, he said that The Lying Game caters to the interest of teens, with plenty of romance and a focus on the search for biological parents. “There are aspects of both shows that are great, that are specific to ABC Family,” he said. After the session, ABC Family president Michael Riley reiterated that The Lying Game‘s demo target is much younger than Ringer, which he also hasn’t seen (but he stressed that he is a big fan of Ringer star Sarah Michelle Gellar.) He said he actually sees more similarities between The Lying Game and another ABC Family series, Pretty Little Liars in terms of the setting and the mystery involved. (The titles have a similar ring to them too.) The Lying Game premieres on Aug. 15, Ringer debuts Sept. 15.

When did ABC family become the little bitch network?
I remember a time when family programming meant I didn’t have to be concerned about drunken hookups or backstabbing rich sluts on my television.
I dont understand how these 2 shows are the same besides both having twins. The premise of both are completely different.
When they realized it would double their ratings.
stop the spin charles. it not only has alot of “Ringer”… throw in ABC family’s new “Switched At Birth”…2 teenagers from completely different backgrounds?? (and the search by one for her biological parents)??. can you think of any other show you can steal the premise from?
Are you serious? You do realize both Switched at Birth and The Lying Game were developed in early to mid 2010.Switched At Birth was greenlit in September 2010 and debuted in June 2011, while The Lying Game was in consideration in September 2010, was greenlit in February 2010 and will debut next Monday.
Ringer, on the other hand, was announced in January 2011 and was greenlit in May and will debut in September.
I don’t see how you can say they’re stealing anything from Ringer. The people at TCA had to know the production timeline on these shows. They should have asked this question to the producers of Ringer, not The Lying Game.
The CW isn’t the only network getting their….”inspiration” from ABC Family shows. CBS is running a commercial for “Young and the Restless” that is a complete copy of the “Pretty Little Liars” intro. They use the same song (“Two Can Keep a Secret”) and a female holding her index finger up to her lips, implying keep quiet….it’s a secret. It’s a blatant artistic rip-off.
I have a mad crazy girl crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar, as do most peopleboth boys AND girls in my age bracket 18-35… = Ringer wins….at least I hope!!!!!
“The Lying Game” was produced and will be released before “Ringer” while the latter show is also based on a series of books.
From what I just read in the post, exactly.
How is Lying Game, which is based on books copying Ringer? How come the material written earlier isn’t held up as the one being copied? WTF!
Feel like I’m watching the Sunday morning bullshit shows because it’s all spin and slant.
Don’t you mean the former? The Lying Game is based off a series of books, while Ringer isn’t.
Actually Ringer is a remake of a Spanish telenovela that came out before the lying game
Lol I hope you’re not talking about La Usurpadora. Not even close.
this is crap! the lying game is based off of a (brilliant) book series! it can’t be copying ringer if it’s based off a book, now can it?
I don;t get it either. Both shows are totally different. It’s like comparing 2 films about a baby to each other. It’s simply a twin thing and because they are coming out at the same time. You might as well compare the Vampire Diaries to Twilight. It’s that dumb.
“You might as well compare the Vampire Diaries to Twilight.”
…comparing those two isn’t that far a stretch, and neither is comparing Ringer and Lying Game.
I watched the lying games and ringer and they have many things in common. They are both about two identical twin sister who fin out about each other, the rich one disappears and the poor one lives her life not know what else to do. The rich appears again and drama happens. The rich ones also have secret boyfriends who find out the story of the switch. And they do appeal to the same age of viewers. I’m a teen and was interested in both shows.
I watched the shows and they have so many things in common, you’d think the shows were both written by the same person
