How often does a TCA panel on a TV show includes a question to the star: “When did you first know that you were adorable?” That happened today during the session for Fox’s new comedy New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel as a dorky girl moving in with three guys. The indie darling was, well, adorable, in her responses, including blushing in dismissing the adorable label. “I don’t think I’ve ever read a role as good for myself,” she said of her part on the show. The producers talked about the casting change, with Lamorne Morris replacing co-star Damon Wayans Jr, who had to pull out after the pilot due to his commitment to ABC’s Happy Endings. Instead of making this a straight recasting, the producers decided to keep the pilot as is with Wayans Jr as one of Jess’ roommates and then have his character move out and introduce Morris in Episode 2 as a new roommate. “We were really happy with the pilot, the chemistry was where we wanted it,” executive producer Brett Baer said. “So we wanted to bring in a new character that would really bring a new energy to the show.” Added Jake Kasdan, director of the pilot and executive producer of the series, “We thought the overall dynamic was very rich and were looking to preserve that but tailoring to a different actor.”
Responding to question why a black actor, Wayans Jr., was replaced with another black actor, executive producer Dave Finkel said, “(The decision) had nothing to do with race.” The producers said that they read about 200-300 actors of different races for the role, and Morris was an early standout during the casting of the pilot but became unavailable after he booked another comedy pilot, CBS’ The Assistants. Then, after the upfronts, Wayans Jr, who had been cast in second position to his bubble ABC series Happy Endings, had to drop out when Happy Endings was renewed, and Morris became available after CBS passed on The Assistants.
Creator/executive producer Liz Meriwether admitted that “it was a challenge to start the show” with a major casting change. But the producers found a silver lining. “We wanted to make the show feel as real as possible, and when you are in your 20s, you move around all the time.” The dynamic of the show will not change much because the three guys still know each other, Kasdan said. Added Meriwether, “All characters are in that moment of their lives where they are starting over.”

I am in total agreement that Zooey is adorable, but she also seems to stay in her comfort zone. That was good when she was in her 20′s but she’s 31 now. Time to take on some more grown-up roles.
LOL Cameron Diaz is still trying to play “adorable” and she’s damn near 40. Leave Zooey alone.
To be fair to Cameron Diaz, at least she didn’t set up a website that basically celebrates grown women being infantile and “adorable”.
So if Happy Endings ever gets cancelled…. they could always bring Wayans Jr. back.
(F.Y.I. I am a Happy Endings fan)
I love Happy Endings. Damon Wayans Jr. belongs to Happy Endings!
okay what is with Hollywood casting one black guy on shows. This country is soo stupid.
Better than none. But what did the roommate ad in the universe of the show read like? “Needed: A New Black Roommate To Replace The One We Had”?
Are you paying Lamorne Morris’ bills? Are you booking jobs for him? Then get off it! He’s an actor that I’m sure is thrilled he booked a job that looks promising enough to run for many seasons. Do you think he cares that he’s a black guy that replaced a black guy? He’s an actor that got WORK! That’s all that matters especially since his pilot didn’t get picked up at CBS.
Better than none???
Blacks are tired of being the token person in Hollywood… doing it just as a favor. A full black cast can appeal to all. Tired of dominating casting for only WHITE people. It’s ridiculous.
It’s okay to have all black casts but not a white cast with one black person? Seems like you’re the racist here.
uumm there are shows that have token white people in them too, so lets not play the race card.
^ The Anti-Diversity police strike again!
Who’s the idiot who asked why they replaced one black guy with another black guy? You never hear anyone say, “Hey, why’d you replace that white guy with a white guy.” Assinine. Put the show on the air so we can laugh already. Sheesh.
Thank you… you have said what I was just about to say.. THANK YOU…my thoughts EXACTLY.
Zooey is a pleasure to watch. And she is terrific and hilarious in the upcoming OUR IDIOT BROTHER. Check it, yo!
I think it’s very smart to leave the pilot as is, and leave Wayans’ character in it. In the future he could always make return guest appearances, or if Happy Endings ends before this one, he could return to the cast.
I agree. I like his character in this show. Hope he does come back!
The trailers for this are grating and the show looks too twee for its own good. Enough with the manic pixie dreamgirl crap.
I saw the promo for the show yesterday and I notice Damian and then Lamorne in the final screen…. so I knew something changed.
I still like threes company
They replaced a black guy with a black guy because obviously they already have writing stuff that involves black stereotype jokes, black vs white moments, black parents visiting, etc. How hypocritical to not admit it, what’s the big deal ?
My first message wasn’t present when I wrote the second, sorry for the confusion. I apologize.
This looks like another stupid, not-funny, short-lived show.
If the so-called “indie” public think Zooey is so great, they can have her. But she clearly can’t act, and playing a brain-dead twenty-something when you’re over 30 is evidence that you’ve got a lot of growing up to do.
This gal has the same kind of vulnerable cuteness that worked for Kirsty Alley on Cheers. That doesn’t make her brain dead or a bad actress. And why does she have to be 20 something as a character or an actress for this humor to work? It works…shes adorable. And give the writers a break…they started in the pilot showing friends who weren’t black and white..just friends. Stop counting the gays and blacks on these shows and start counting the good lines for 3 dimensional characters of any color.
the new character change sucks! the character who replaced Wayans Jr. is not nearly as funny! the original male trio in the first episode was priceless! i hope the show can make up for it in the long run! i have high hopes!
Damon Wayans Jr was great in this role. Wish he would come back. Not the same without him.
The chemistry between the characters is gone in one episode without Wayan’s. What a shame. What an insult to slip in new ” black guy” and expect America not to notice in 2012. We love watching Zooey Deschanel, but Coach make the 4 characters gel. This show had potential. Too bad.
At first I was disappointed that the Coach character disappeared, but then I fell in love with the new actor…he’s great. The show is really fun to watch. So lighten up people! I don’t see colour, I see a bunch of guys adjusting to their new, comical and cute female room mate. Oops, now I’ll get in trouble because I mentioned the “gender” card, yikes! Let the rant begin!
For goodness sakes. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. I love Damon Wayans and this show makes me laugh, something lacking in life these days. Well done.
If you don’t like this country then go back to where you came from!(Crissy Snow)
As I am an avid television viewer, watching actual quality shows with actual substance, such as the “The Walking Dead”, “Boardwalk Empire”, “Breaking Bad”, “Dexter”, and so forth, I forced myself to watch the first few episodes. Much to my chagrin, I found myself yearning for the show to conclude prematurely. While I may be unique in this aspect of my personality, I think most will agree; when you watch something really worth watching, you never want the show to end, wishing you had the entire season at your immediate disposal. Basically, after giving this program a legitimate chance to enthrall me, my opinion is that this show is horrible, offering little in the way of humor, and poorly written characters, with even worse actors. Even after Zooey’s horrendous, monotone, even nasal performance in the SyFy mini-series, “Tin Man”( a twisted interpretation of “The Wizard of Oz” with Deschanel portraying Dorothy, so cleverly referred to as DG in this flop), I continue to give her the chance to redeem herself. Yet, she never does! She is a terrible actress who only plays herself…how does she get work? There are so many hotter actresses that can actually act! I suppose she must be advanced in “other areas”.
I apologize for swerving off the beaten path of arguing about which black actor is better, because they both suck, but if you haven’t seen the show, DON’T!!!
Like really why did they have to change the guys though? I mean New Girl is going places why would they change it after the first episode? This frusterates me! Please someone explain why someone would do this!! WHHHYYYY?!
Why would they change the people after only the first episode?! Seriously, I still love New Girl though.
“An all black cast can appeal to all”??? That’s the dumbest backwards ass racist comment I’ve heard in a long time.
the show is way better now.. Wayans’s character was going to be stagnant and he seemed out of place with the other guys
