EXCLUSIVE: Tobey Maguire’s Material Pictures has hired Focus Features executive Matthew Plouffe to be its new SVP Production. Plouffe, who has spent the past six years in the New York headquarters of Focus, will move to Los Angeles and start the job Oct. 1. Plouffe is currently Focus’ Director of Production and has worked on such Focus films as the Sam Mendes-directed Away We Go, Shane Acker’s 9, the Ryan Fleck/Anna Boden-directed It’s Kind of A Funny Story and most recently on the Lone Scherfig-directed adaptation of One Day that stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Plouffe wanted to move West, and the transition was done with the blessing of Focus Features chief James Schamus, who wrote and produced Maguire’s breakout film as an actor, The Ice Storm. “All of us at Focus have been blessed over the past six years to see Matt grow to become one of the smartest, hardest-working and kindest execs out there, and while we’re sad to see him go, he couldn’t have found a better opportunity than the one Tobey has offered. It’s great to see two of the smartest people in the business teaming up,” Schamus said.
Said Maguire: “I have a lot of respect for Matt. He has an impressive track record and a great eye.” Material Pictures is currently producing the Adam Shankman-directed Rock of Ages for New Line, and its development project roster includes Pawn Sacrifice, a drama about chess genius Bobby Fischer, which has David Fincher attached; Robotech, a feature based on the TV series; and the Shana Feste-scripted Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale, an adaptation of the Carolyn Turgeon novel (Material Pictures previously worked with Feste on Country Strong). Material is based at Sony Pictures. As an actor, Maguire is currently starring in the Baz Luhrmann-directed The Great Gatsby for Warner Bros.

In other words, Tobey wants to male films nobody will see. Got it.
Somebody had to take Merchant and Ivory’s place. Nice to see Tobey manning up. Hope he can make it profitable too. Good Luck Maguire.
I AM HOPPING THAT STATEMENT MADE BY BNGREEL ISN’T TRUTH. I SEE TOO MANY FILM THAT TURN OUT TO BE DOGS THAT I DECIDE TO WAIT UNTIL IT COME OUT DVD TO SEE IT. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT KIND OF FILM THAT WILL DEBUT NEXT YEAR.GOOD LUCK TO MATTHEW PLOUFFE.YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Matt is one of the rarest types in this business – a truly decent and grounded individual. I know he’ll find success wherever he hangs his hat – and he will deserve it!
Everyone is leaving the sinking ship that is Focus.
Matt’s an upstanding guy who has a vast knowledge of film and great taste. I can’t say the same for the majority of you trolls who comment negatively on these kinds of posts. The reason you are such miserable people is because you put out negativity in the world and it flies right back at you like a boomerang.
I’m sure he’s a great guy, and I like the emphasis on drama, but didn’t all those movies underperform? “Away We Go” was one of the least engaging narratives I have ever seen, just awful.
Everything can’t be summer blockbusters. We need quiet, low-key indie films, too. People always moan and groan about big-budget remakes and sequels, then snark that original ideas “underperform.” SMH
Go Plouffe!
I agree with everything that you said, we need GOOD, low key indie pictures. Away We Go was awful really, really, awful. Are you a fan of the movie? Are you a fan of any of the movies on this “Stellar Track Record”?
Again, nothing against Plouffe, I’m sure he’s a great guy. But when companies come out with these log rolling press releases that overstate success, sorry, it just doesn’t make anyone mentioned in them look good.
GRRRRRRRRRRRREAT
Matt is one of the good ones – smart, informed and with great taste. Terrific hire for Material.
So this is how it works. A guy can have a mediocre movie — and, yes, “Away We Go” was underwhelming — and yet catapult into the executive suite? It sure looks like the very ho-hum-ish Matthew Plouffe is perfecting the art of falling up, with friends in high places to pull his mediocre talents along. Must be nice to be so lucky, given the lack of skill he has exhibited to this point. Only in Hollywood…
Matt Plouffe is a development God. He has already pitched the seminal movie MANSPIDER, about a spider bitten by a radioactive man. If that isn’t heat, then I’m the Sun. Or, at least, his son.
Wait. I saw the movie “Away We Go” Can I get two hours of my life back? That movie was the equivalent of taking glass tubes and shattering them in both eyes, and any executive who had a hand in pushing it deserves to be canned. So it is no surprise to see Matthew Plouffe get promoted. Just another day in a crazy industry where mediocrity gets its reward. As for these other posts it looks as if the industry shills are working overtime today. Matt is a nice enough guy but Hollywood is about quantifiable results not a grin and a smile. If people outside of LA ever want to know why the industry is whacked promotions such as this one, fraught with friends helping friends, is good place to start for an explanation. That said, I wish Mr. Plouffe sincerely good luck in his new post. After all, the kid’s gotta eat, right?
Jeeze, who’s left at Focus? Sam and James?
To all the haters, Focus isn’t a sinking ship. Answer this: What do you do to prevent a ship from sinking?
“Bail.”
Not only is Matt one of my favorite people in the industry, but he’s a stand up guy with great taste, a killer work ethic, and an unwavering passion for great filmmakers and stories.
Kudos to Tobey for recognizing his talent and congrats to Matt on his next step to the top of this business!
Great news! Matt’s not only a smart guy with fantastic taste, he’s also a genuinely nice guy. Glad he’s coming to LA and moving up the ladder. We need more people like Matt who actually watch films, read material and have original thoughts upstairs.
AND, who also manage to return phone calls – a rare combo.
Good guy, gracious and smart.
ROBOTECH TO THE RESCUE
How are they planning on creating a live action Robotech without the rights to the the Macross Saga story, or their transforming Valkyrie design? Isn’t that like trying film Transformers without Optimus Prime???
