Scripps Networks has appointed Andy Singer, formerly the general manager of the company’s DIY Network, as head of programming and production at Travel Channel. Singer, whose new title is SVP Programming and Production Development, will focus on developing shows, talent and the network’s programming strategy; he replaces Fred Graver, who is focusing on special projects. Scripps is looking to grow Travel beyond its current 66 million households; earlier today, the company reported that the network’s revenue was up 15% year-over-year; Ross Babbitt will take Singer’s post at DIY. Before Scripps, Singer was a show producer at VH1 and also produced programs for A&E, 20th Century Fox, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and nationally syndicated broadcast series Extra and Inside Edition.

Maybe this guy will put programming in place that is about travel. The entire lineup is andy bourdain on repeat and a few other food shows.
Actually, Travel Channel is fully distributed at 98+million homes. Fred Graver is a great guy. He sometimes lets his ego think for him, and develops the wrong kind of shows. I wonder if Laureen Ong, the president of Travel, was forced by Scripps to replace him. She hired Fred just last year. She does tend to be trigger-happy. Travel is my fave channel, I’m addicted to all the food/travel shows they have.
The only thing Fred Graver did for Travel Channel was alienate the viewers by destroying the network with lame ideas. Everything he and Laureen Ong launched has failed. Ong hired him last year after he spent how many years as a “consultant” after being fired from VH1. Looks like Scripps execs have finally woken up to the mess they created. Graver out. Singer in. Which Scripps exec will take Ong’s place?
Man vs Food Nation baby!!
Amen, brudder. I used to WATCH the Travel Channel, and the Food Network, and TV Land.
Don’t any more. They stopped showing what they promised, and are so busy following the pack that they can’t remember how they got where they were.
Laureen’s aggressiveness–she promised shows would do 1.0 HH ratings — may be haunting her. Fred’s new shows all did 0.3s at best, and the food shows developed years ago by previous regime will tire soon. Poor Fred, he needed someone to give him a reality check sooner. I still think 1 year on the job is too soon to “reassign” someone. Hit shows take a long time! But Scripps needs to show a major return on their recent investment, Travel.
I think Fred took risks, and while he green lit his fair share of dogs, he did bring in one great show – Triple Rush. It was compelling, incredibly shot, and probably the best hour of reality television that I’ve seen in many years. A shame they didn’t give it a chance to build an audience as it was the most promising show they’ve had in a while. Seems Travel has bigger problems to deal with than getting rid of a scapegoat.
Agreed. Triple Rush is a gem. That show clearly suffered from an extreme lack of marketing and those are the folks who need to be shown the door. Hopefully another net will take note and pick it up. Had me hooked by the first commercial break.
Congrats to Ross Babbit and Andy Singer. Both great programmers. I sure Andy will bring great things to the Travel Channel and Ross to the DIY Network.
Fred Graver announced to a packed room at Travel Channel that “working here will be a transformational moment in your careers!” Well, that certainly came true.
