EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has acquired remake rights to Phasma ex Machina, the small independent feature directing debut by Matt Osterman that was the toast of the genre film festival circuit. The studio acquired the project as a pitch for a horror movie called Our House, and the studio has attached Gary Shore to direct the remake and Nathan Parker to write it. John Davis is the producer along with Nick Spicer of XYZ Films. Shore and Parkers are already collaborating on a feature version of Cup of Tears for Universal and Working Title, based on the stylized samurai short film that Shore directed. That short has created heat and prompted Universal to make several deals with him. I’m told that the hope is for Shore to direct Phasma ex Machina, potentially follow with an adaptation of the James Patterson book series Maximum Ride, and then helm a feature version of Cup of Tears.
Phasma ex Machina, which was retitled Ghost From the Machine when it was acquired by Screen Media and released on DVD and VOD, ponders the grey area between life and death and how science can bridge the two. The protagonist is a young man who is raising his little brother after their parents die in a car crash. His desire to bring them back prompts him to invent a machine designed to be a conduit to the grey beyond, and his success proves dangerous to himself and everyone around him. Here is a trailer for the original film, followed by one for Shore’s Cup of Tears. Shore’s repped by CAA and Anonymous Content, Parker by WME:
Here’s Cup of Tears:

wow. As an unemployed actor, none of this encourages me to get out of bed.
That CUP OF TEARS trailer reminds me I need a bed pan so I can vomit and crap myself when need be.
so…what happened to Matt Osterman? One wonders if he is happy his film is getting the big screen treatment and yet he seems to have nothing to do with it…and it’s being given to a guy who made a short? (cool one sure but still)- I’d be pretty fucking pissed (and have no knowledge of the deal)
Is this supposed to be anything like the graphic novel Ex Machina from 05/06?
No. Hence the different title.
To rewrite a re-make? Way to go.
In a wooorld…where there was no story, a guy kicked ass. Lots of it.
Huge CONGRATS to Nick Spicer — a hardworking, intelligent, class act with great taste and big ambition. Same goes for the rest of the guys at XYZ. Young guys well on their way to making a name for themselves. Anyone would be lucky to be involved with them.
Gary Shore…LOL.
The Cup Of Tears looks pretty nice, but the history of it’s creation and the time it took to make, although inspiring, reminds of another project that … well … to be kind … fell short. Sucker Punch.
Yes, well considering the trailer for Cup of Tears was made two years before Sucker Punch came out and on a budget probably one thousandth of it, I’d hold my judgement.
Can’t wait for this movie. Cup of Tears looks awesome also.
Gary Shore…LOL that this guy isn’t already a household name. That trailer was bad ass and I’m expecting big things from him. He’s a bona-fide genius.
Exactly- who would have thought a short would lead to all this for the guy, but a brilliant short all the same. Really like his style so excited to see what he has in store for these projects!
I was at Fantasia last year and saw that film. ‘Phasma Ex’ was borderline ‘alright’.
From all the films shown I saw that year, I always thought that ‘Twisted Seduction’ would have gotten a remake. The story had tons of twists, and was entertaining throughout.
This shows once more that Hollywood is about ‘WHO YOU KNOW’ and not ‘HOW GREAT’ a story is.
Waste of money
