Universal has dropped another board-game film adaptation from its groundbreaking six-year exclusive pact with Hasbro, sending Ouija into turnaround to join previous projects Clue, Monopoly and Magic, The Gathering. The Ouija film — which has McG attached to direct and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form producing with Ian Bryce and Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir — will most likely be set up elsewhere, as will Clue, which is funded by Hasbro and is being produced by director Gore Verbinski’s Blind Wink shingle (see Universal Drops ‘Clue’; Gore Verbinksi Moves Forward With Hasbro Cash And New Writers). For Universal, the move is purely economics: Ouija is budgeted at north of $100 million and the studio has Oblivion, R.I.P.D., 47 Ronin, Safe House and Battleship — all big-ticket movies — already in its lineup. (Remember, it also said goodbye to the ambitious film/TV series hybrid The Dark Tower over cost concerns. Vulture is reporting that Universal was serious enough about the cost of Ouija that it is paying Hasbro a $5 million penalty for dropping it, as per terms of its 2008 mega deal with the toy giant.

Thank God.
This is a stupid idea to begin with, and only retards would actually make it, so good for Universal for hopefully showing some sense and not wasting money.
I’m seeing a future Deadline article… It’s coming through… Yes… It’s getting clearer…
“U Sunk By Battleship” / June, 2012
LOL. I’ll be looking out for that one.
It’s because BATTLESHIP is going to FLOP and they know it..
I’m probably in the minority, but I really want this to happen.
Universal clearly knows from the colossal bomb-to-be BATTLESHIP that these board game adaptations don’t work… too bad common sense didn’t prevail before that disaster.
Big fucking surprise…
This is the first good move Universal has made in a while!
These ideas where God-awful to begin with, and I’m assuming that the exec in charge during these deals has long since been fired.
The trailer to “Battleship” looks f-ing terrible, and I imagine U got pretty freaked out at the cold shoulder we all gave it. The flick is going to tank.
Taking such a lame idea for a really costly movie was bad enough, but getting McG to direct? What’s next, Brett Ratner directing “Stratego”? Come on!
ummm…The Battleship trailer actually looked pretty cool. Everyone I know whos seen that trailer said the same thing. I just think you suck at watching trailers.
Which gate do you drive into when going to work at Universal?
The anticipated marketing spend on Battleship is likely what is bogging down Uni’s coffers. They probably aren’t too “frightened” about its potential performance if they can get the trailers seen in enough venues.
This is Uni’s answer to Transformers afterall.
No way this should cost 100 million. Is it going to be like a “scarier” version of Jumanji with lots of SFX and action? Or is it going to be a horror movie.
Either way, U is smart because Battleship looks completely ridiculous. The trailer looked like a parody out of Tropic Thunder. No way that movie will recoup the budget.
I could see Ouija working as a movie but Battleship??? The trailer looks like an intentional parody.
Well I guess someone got fired.
You know, a bunch of folks here are claiming that Battleship will flop and that’s why U is getting away from board games. That’s bullshit. It’s going to flop because it’s a piece of crap, not because it’s an adaptation. Anyone remember the naysayers popping off when POTC was first announced? “What, a movie based on an amusement park ride, that’s retarded, it’ll flop!!!”
Nope.
There’s a good version of Ouija to be made, they just don’t have confidence in themselves or their creative partners that they can get it done. And THAT is the real problem.
I wish I got 5 million from Universal for sending them a crap idea.
Actually, I do have a crap idea. It involves a ship, some aliens, c-list TV actors and a pop singer… Any takers?
This is great news for the Magic 8 Ball movie.
Why would anyone want to make a Quiji movie? Pretty much EVERY movie that’s involved a Quiji board has had bad things happen it in, especially to those using the Quiji board.
Just look at “The Exorcist” “Witchboard” “Paranormal Activity.”
Quiji /= Jumanji
I worked on a film in the late 80s called Witchboard. I think it cost a couple mill and made money with the grindhouse crowd and home video. Spending anything more than that on Ouija is insane!
Actually, I think Ouija could have worked conceptually: Some kids/teens are playing with a ouija board. They get an ominous message from beyond. Hijinks ensue. Could be made for a reasonable budget. But not with the elements involved. With those ATL players attached, it pushes the budget higher than the concept needs.
I agree with you. Uni should have kept the Ouiji property and cut McG and Bay loose. For the $5M they spent in penalities they could have had multiple screenwriters submit spec scripts on this and probably come out with a decent movie.
Yeah, any version of this movie would have elements that are formulaic, but teens would still pay to see it. They’re not old enough to realize that it’s formulaic.
Since Universal is at loss for original ideas and they have an opening in their schedule, let me suggest “Mentos: The Movie.”
THIS SUMMER, FRESH GOES BETTER!
It was put into turnaround to make room for Michael Bay’s $300M+ 3D epic “LINCOLN LOGS” starring Shia LaBeouf and scripted by David Hayter and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby and Aline Brosh McKenna and Bill Goldman and…
why do you suppose Uni is only NOW discovering they have a 30 ton megabomb on their hands? Every one inside and outside of Hollywood could smell this stinker from pre production.
I’m liking that Lincoln Logs idea. A lot. Put the geico lizard in there and an exta barrel of logs so Shia can build more than one and a half houses and I’m there.
I actually thought ouija had the most potential out of all of these if done right… Jumanji with ghosts kind of thing. Maybe now that its moving from universal it will actually be made good.
