USA Nears Renewals Of ‘Suits’ & ‘Necessary Roughness’
EXCLUSIVE: It’s official — USA Network has renewed its hot new legal drama Suits. The series, which will end its 12-episode freshman season on Sept. 8, has received a 16-episode second-season pickup. Suits, starring Gabriel Macht as Harvey, a ruthless hotshot New York attorney, and Patrick J. Adams as Mike, his brilliant college-dropout protege, has been a solid performer since its June 23 launch. It has logged USA’s third-best freshman season of an original series in all key ratings categories including adults 18-49 (2.80 million in Live+7) and total viewers (6.34 million). “One of the things that we are trying with this show is really pushing out, trying new things,” USA co-president Jeff Wachtel said. “With Suits, we’ve gone to a new level of storytelling and visual sophistication and to a little bit of an edgier place — Harvey is not immediately likable and the young hero has made so many bad choices in his life, when we meet him he is dealing drugs. For a network that has made its mark with aspirational characters and smart escapism, this is a step in a new direction.” Added co-president Chris McCumber, “The show opened another Thursday 10 PM success for us after Burn Notice and Royal Pains, and we view it as a long-term player.” The renewal news comes just before Suits is slated to wrap production on its freshman season in Toronto tomorrow. “We believe it is really important to pick up the additional season while the show is still in production — it gives the cast and the crew a sense of stability knowing that the show is coming back, it’s better for the morale on the show.”
USA’s other new summer series, Necessary Roughness, also is expected to be renewed shortly. It doesn’t end production until end of August. (The series started later as it was originally targeted for a fall launch but USA brass then moved the premiere up to July to capitalize on pre-NFL season interest.) While not generating the same amount of chatter as Suits, Necessary Roughness has been a very solid ratings performer. Last week, it drew 4.46 million viewers/1.76 million among 18-49 in Live+same day, actually edging out Suits (4.03 million viewers/1.72 million in 18-49). “It may not have that immediate buzz that we’re feeling for Suits, it may be a little bit quieter but they have done a great job creatively and we also think it’s a long-term success for us,” Wachtel said. There will be more renewal news coming for USA’s returning series too as USA is coming off its biggest summer ever, maintaining its position as the top-rated cable network with a record number of original series – 8. Gina Torres, Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle and Sarah Rafferty co-star in Suits, which was created by Aaron Korsh. Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein executive produce and Korsh co-exec produces for Universal Cable Prods., while the pilot’s director Kevin Bray is a supervising producer.

Suits is great fun! Glad to see it picked up.
Very happy to learn that Suits has been renewed. Fantastic scripts far out-shadow so many of the major networks attempts at drama.
Anxious for another “Suits” season to air. USA has hit homeruns with the two best drama series I have ever seen – White Collar – being the other excellent series. Hour long episodes are like mini-movies with rich plots, top knotch writing and best ensemble acting ever witnessed. Slick editing and visuals make these shows into new models for excellence in programming. Thank you USA!
We can’t wait for suit to come back, my husband is asking every night his so addicted to it, very good show. Please keep renewing it. Love love love it..
I love Suits, great show. Always fun to watch how Toronto shows up in a show that is suppose to be filmed in NY.
Great acting and compelling story. Now all we need is to get USA network in Canada. FX is coming, why not USA?
Yes to the USA network in Canada please! We don’t get “White Collar”, it’s brutal! Thank God for DVD…and I don’t say that often. Bravo channel will probably screw up with “Suits” as well so yes I am all for a USA network affiliate here.
You can always watch new episodes on Hulu.com
I love Necessary Roughness and glad to hear they are renewing and maybe with 16 shows. It is highly entertaining and Callie Thorne is exceptional as Dr. Dani. NR is really a nice change of pace as a show that does not have to depend on fire arms and chase scenes to be interesting. Finally a show that deals with the mental/emotional side of personal challenges instead of an explosion every 5 minutes.
The best show on USA by far!
Thrilled to hear of SUITS renewal. I think the show is original and captivating and I look forward to each week’s episode!
JC
YES! Fun show. Bravo.
Yes! So excited! I knew they;d both be renewed for a 2nd season but seeing it officially is awesome! I love both shows
Love, love this show! Such a great respite from all
of those horrible reality shows & reruns! I am surprised
this wasn’t picked up by a major network.
I am so happy! I love both of these shows. I knew I would like Suits but I was surprised by how much. I actually stop what I am doing to watch it and not catch it on Comcast’s On Demand. Glad they got rid of that sketchy friend, too!
Bring back the “Mail Room Guy” from the Pilot episonde on SUITS! Love all the characters. Miss him. Great show -
So thrilled Suits was renewed. Love the story line and how it’s developing. The guys are terrific but Meghan Markle is my favorite. She’s a wonderful actress, beautiful and smart. Love her. Hope we see much more of her next year.
Meghan Markle is SO hot, although her character is starting to annoy me.
Loved her even more when she was Suitcase Girl #24 on Deal or No Deal.
Oh Yes!!! I am very excited that these two shows are coming back for another season and frankly they should be back, I am a big fan of Necessary Roughness but more of Suits and I just love these shows thank you USA you guys are doing such a great job!!!
Who writes these comments? The staff at USA?
Gene Klein of ‘Suits’ wrote the following:
“@KleinGene: Attn hoser friends – you have to watch our show now. #Suits is coming to BRAVO Monday nights at 10pm. Season 1 allegedly starts on Aug.22”
A second to watch an already amazing show.
I LOVE THIS SHOW!
Suits is great. Watching it right now. They all do a great job but Rick Hoffman is doing a great job in his role.
‘Suits’ has a nice premise with likeable (and capable) actors.
Nice enough as it is…now if they sharpen up the writing, it would join my ‘Don’t miss’ queue.
i was kind of sad when cbs dropped the defenders. but then i started watching suits and its 10x better. would have cried if it didn’t get a renewal
This show is great! Happy to hear that is is renewed. I love how it incorporates corporate law into a tv series. Can’t wait for the season finale. Keep it up.
What a breath of fresh air! A well-written, superbly acted series that doesn’t rely on violence or vulgar language to add spice to the show. The chemistry between ‘Harvey’ and ‘Mike’ is excellent. This show blows most dramas on the major networks out of the water.
I thought you can watch episodes online, did that change?
I love love love Suits. Harvey, Mike, Donna and Jenny are my favorites. I totally hate Rachel. Her cheating ass needs to die.
So glad to see it got renewed. This is a GREAT and very FRESH show! Get sick of all the cop shows that are on now. Love this and just hope they get picked up by a major network. This is so addicting of a show, before I taped them I would watch online. Keep up the great work!
sooooooooooo cooool this show! I WANT TO SEE SEASON 2!!! when is it coming out??
When does season 2 begin. I can’t wait.
glad both of these shows are coming back… Neither have made it over here to the uk yet but I have watched them all courtesy of you Americans…Thank you and keep it going…
