EXCLUSIVE: After the West Memphis 3 murder defendants were released from prison today after 18 years, it seemed like just a matter of time before the movie crowd got involved because the case is so controversial and became a cause celebre with the likes of Johnny Depp and Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh. Turns out that there is a feature film that already has a screenplay and a major director, ready to start production by the spring. Devil’s Knot is an under $20 million feature that has The Sweet Hereafter and Chloe director Atom Egoyan aboard to direct a script that was originally written by Scott Derrickson and Paul Boardman, the team behind The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Egoyan has spent the last six weeks working with Boardman on a rewrite.
The script is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three, an in-depth chronicle of the sensationalized trials that sent the three to prison for the murder of the three 8-year old boys who were found hog-tied in a drainage ditch. The project is not a rush job. Derrickson and Boardman began writing it in 2006 when the film first took root at Dimension Films. It will be produced by Elizabeth Fowler, Clark Peterson, Richard Saperstein and Boardman. Saperstein was Dimension president and he acquired the film. After he left, Dimension eventually put the project into turnaround and Saperstein became re-involved as producer. The package includes life rights deals with some of the figures in the case, and especially Ron Lax, a private investigator who has been working pro bono on trying to overturn the verdict since 1993. There are no rights deals with the West Memphis 3 defendants Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., because at the time, two were serving life sentences and Echols was on death row. The plan is to finance the film independently, but the filmmakers might well make a domestic distribution deal before getting underway. Egoyan’s repped by WME.

So psyched to see. The ending will be much more satisfying now. Egoyan is perfect for this. Seems like a no-brainer.
This is all going to look very strange when it comes out that the WM3 DID in fact commit the murders, as the predominance of evidence points to.
Come to think of it, that will make a pretty interesting movie.
Y’know, I can understand people *wanting* them to be guilty. I cannot for the life of me, however, understand how people can look at the mountain of evidence against their guilt and essentially call day “night.” Every single legal professional who has looked at this case has come away convinced they were wrongfully convicted, and most come away convinced of their innocence (not the same thing).
What evidence? Are you insane or just an idiot? The only ‘evidence’ was a coerced plea made by a borderline mentally handicapped teenager after the police badgered him for over 12 hours straight. You obviously know nothing about the facts of this case and should probably move to some backwards town where people hide from rock music and anyone dressed in black.
@ Gary…….what were you smoking when you posted that comment? Did you fail to even bother reading ANYTHING about this case? Such as DNA left by one of the victim’s step fathers? There’s reasonable doubt right there. As far as where the DNA was found, do some reading and educate yourself about the case before making assinine statements.
There was no evidence what so ever connecting these gentlemen to the crime………get the facts straight before you post!!!!!
The bulk of the evidence completely excludes them from even anywhere near the crime scene. You are clearly very uninformed. The only physical evidence linking anyone to the crime scene at all is hair from Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of Steve Branch. Not one physical link between Jason, Jessie or Damien was found at the crime scene. The tiny 45 minutes of ”confession” tape from Jessie Misskelley’s 14 hour interrogation divulged nothing but inconsistencies in time of death, location and cause of death. That’s why Jessie’s confession wasn’t even admitted as evidence in Jason and Damien’s trial. You are an idiot.
I agree with everything your are saying but the reason they didnt use the confesson of Jessie is that the other boys on trail would have the right to face their accuser and he would not confess against them, therefor they can not use the taped bullcrap confession witch was forced anyway. This whole case from the beging to end was a tragic thing all together I just hope one day justice comes to the man who really did commit this crime and i believe we all know who that is…GOD BLESS the WM3
Terry Hobbs was also the last person to of been seen with all three of the children by three different witness statements.
There was no evidence against them. You are wrong. The WM3 didn’t kill those children. I will stand by their side forever because I know they are innocent.
Mr. Egoyan is a very classy choice to tell this story. I have been following the case for years and have read the book “Devil’s Knot” (twice) and it is an extremely powerful and well researched work. It will make an excellent film.
If memory serves Michael Pitt was going to play Echols when I heard about this project a few years back.
Kevin Kerslake has also been attached to a WM3 project, but I wouldn’t bet any money on that one.
Caroline– You are right about Pitt, but that was actually a different project from years ago.
Michael Pitt(Broadwalk Empire) Is the Best Pic to Play Echols they need to really look again at that!!!
Atom Egoyan is one of the few filmmakers who can treat this story with the respect and class that it deserves. Make a good one, guys.
I had the privelege of seeing Exotica and hearing Atom Egoyan speak many years ago in Madrid.
Amazing filmaker who will do this material justice. I’ll be watching!
Totally agree -it’s right material for him. Looking forward to see this one.
Can’t fvckin wait. Ideal would have been David Fincher or Darren Aronofsky, but I’ll take Egoyan. He’ll do us proud.
In what way would David Fincher or Darren Aronofsky bring anything positive to this? Both are fantastic filmmakers, but under Fincher’s eye, the film would be filled with pointless nihilism and under Aronofsky’s eye, it’d most likely become too pulpy for it’s own good. Egoyan IS the ideal director for this project.
Very pleased to hear Egoyan is working on this. His ability to craft films that are atmospheric and complex, and his miraculous ability to craft stunning endings, make him a very good choice for this.
With Atom Egoyan’s hands wrapped firmly around the style and feel of the film, it should lose consciousness and pass out about 10 minutes in. So boring and navel gazing. Yawn.
Win an Oscar dad!
Love u
Asa
Definitely looking forward to this. The names attached give me hope for a creatively, as well as emotionally, satisfying film.
I wish we could see Alberta Watson directed by Atom Egoyan again (as in ‘The Sweet Hereafter’).
went will the movie come ouT? does anyone know? would love to see the moie.
Its horrible case 6 kids lost there lives ! Those boys had nothen to do with it the step dad I believe is the killer neighbors saw him last by boys they got piece of his hair on boy shoe lace ect to much proff he did it very sad case !
Evidence? Really? What evidence exactly did the State produce that could possibly have led any sane, even semi intelligent person to a guilty verdict? Seems to me you’d be wise to watch that witch hunt of a trial again and this time actually pay attention.
