After the Hitfix website reported that Mike Myers had signed a deal to do a fourth Austin Powers film, other websites are running wild with it. What’s really going on? Well, I wouldn’t necessarily dress for the premiere just yet. No deal has yet been signed, and top New Line brass are surprised the whole thing has reared up after they made Myers an offer six months to a year ago, and hear nothing. Forgive New Line for being skeptical: The film company thought it was well on the way to another Austin Powers installment when it made a deal in 2008 with Myers to collaborate with Mike McCullers for a Dr. Evil film that was to focus on his relationship with son Scotty (Seth Green), meant to be an unabashed homage to Myers’ father, whose Brit influence basically prodded Myers to create the British agent Austin Powers character in the first place. Then, Myers’ screen creation, The Love Guru, opened to $13 million in June 2008 against the nearly $40 million that Steve Carell’s Get Smart grossed with Steve Carell. Myers went AWOL, surfacing only for a small role in Inglourious Basterds. McCullers never moved forward with the script.
Cut to six month ago. While Myers got a $20 million against 20% of first-dollar gross for Austin Powers in Goldmember (which grossed $297 million in 2002), New Line sent Myers’ reps a pro forma deal offer that gave a low upfront payday against a gross that would kick in after Warner Bros recouped its costs. That’s not an uncommon deal for stars who cashed out-sized first-dollar gross checks but who ain’t ever getting those deals again. Myers was offered a deal similar to the one Cameron Diaz got for Bad Teacher and Jim Carrey for Mr. Popper’s Penguins. The studio heard nothing from Myers — until this week, when Myers’ reps came out of the woodwork and expressed interest. New Line’s not sure what this means. It’s unclear whether Myers wants to proceed with his 2008 dad homage idea, or whether he’s figured out a new way to revive his Shagadelic secret agent. I’m told that at this point it’s not clear whether McCullers will be back or if Myers would work with another collaborator. Also unclear is whether Jay Roach is engaged at this point, even though he directed the first three films. And there is the question of whether Myers waited too long to bring his franchise character back. It’s the risk actors take when they choose to stay away for years at a time. I often wonder the same thing about the wildly talented Chris Tucker, whose name was mentioned as the possible lead in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (a role that went to Jamie Foxx) but who has not been on screen since 2007′s Rush Hour 3. But say one thing for Mike Myers: He’s a handful to work with, but the only movie star who reliably creates screen characters as memorable is Sacha Baron Cohen, who’s currently back at it with The Dictator. Myers probably has enough good will to launch another Austin Powers, but if he wants it, he’d better move quickly and not disappear like he did in 2008. After all, we’re coming up on 10 years since the last Austin Powers, and the clock is ticking.

I’ve heard from Myers people that he has no understanding of the business, and still thinks he deserves a $20 million dollar upfront payday as opposed to a smaller amount with backend potential. This franchise could be reinvigorated with the right story. People still have a soft spot for both the character and the actor.
Cool. You write that as though you’re actually in the biz. Ballsy.
Funny comment, Mike Ovitz!
You write your comment as if YOU ARE still in the biz. Ballsy!
How are the sports investments going? Talk to Mickey E lately?
It is already too late for another straight up “Austin Powers” movie. Also, I think the whole “Dad Homage/Dr.Evil” idea sounds like a horrible. Myers thinks he’s this generations Peter Sellers and I am sorry to say that is just not the case. I am not saying that I think he is untalented. What I am saying is that he does not have the versatility and genus of Sellers. If he had went in a different direction with his career after the last “Austin Powers” movie, he might still be relevant now. As it stands now though, there is a whole generation of younger moviegoers who know nothing of Mike Myers or Austin Powers.
Though it’s not like even Peter Sellers was ever getting his era’s equivalent of A $20 million payday.
Um, I wasn’t born when the first Indiana Jones movies were out, but I have seen them and love them. Just because you weren’t around when a film was released doesn’t mean a) you haven’t seen it and b) wouldn’t be interested in another one.
Did you just compare Indiana Jones to Austin Powers? Oh dear.
Did you just compare Myers vs. Sellers and proceed to debate yourself over the topic?
The track record for revived franchises (that aren’t reboots) is not that great. The new installments of Indiana Jones & Die Hard were critical duds that were panned by most audiences as well. No one wants to see old actors dressing up in their costumes from 20 years ago.
…and yet we’re getting another one of both.
indy 4 = $800 mil box office. die hard 4 = $400 mil box office. youre an idiot.
Now, what is the purpose of calling him an idiot? Just spew your facts and leave it be, big man.
i like the name calling. facts are good, but the names really drives home the point.
“panned by audiences” = minimal repeat viewings or business on home video.
oh behave! the real question is will the music be as amazing as it was in the first 3 films?
Well, Jay Roach is still married to Susanna Hoffs, so there is hope for the music.
The first AUSTIN POWERS was hilarious, the second was dredfull, and the last one, saw a few minutes of it and changed the channel. Do we need another one? Then again, I don’t own the studios.
Don’t listen to them, Mike. My teen-age son’s a huge fan of Austin Powers and Wayne’s World and so are plenty of his friends!
Indeed, GN – I’m no Meyers fan, but my 12 year old and his friends (all of them love comedy, as good 12 year olds should) all know about Wayne’s World and truly like the character. Mike Meyers is still making younger people laugh, too.
There’s an audience out there, so n AP sequel could be done.
In addition to poor old Mike Meyer’s closetful of eccentricities and ‘difficulty’, I posit that this more recent age of celebrity meat grinder info culture makes him even more pensive about doing, well, anything. In his 90s heyday, his personal life was never an issue. Since then, his divorce, work habits and even sexuality have brought him more attention than any work in comedy.
He also seems exponentially less prolific than today’s comedy royalty – something that’s likely a contributing factor to his lessened relevance and artistic insecurity. He’s never been a presence on the web or engaged in cross-platform work like Sasha Baron Cohen, Will Ferrel and the like.
…both of you are referencing movies Myers made in the 1990s. In this century, he’s only developed dead-horse-beating sequels and The Love Guru.
Xgoutx,
I am certain as a parent you must take great care in teaching your children right from wrong. I would make the suggestion that you clearly explain to them the ramifications of making a statement made on the assumption it will prove to be true. They should know that when a person posits about someone or something without being pretty darn sure their assumption is firmly based in truth, they run the risk of starting rumors or creating false impressions.
To relieve you of the burden you might feel to further posit about Mike Myers, let me as a person with accurate information assure you that your assumptions are as far from the truth as you are from any knowledge of this man beyond the musings of Us Magazine.
Why don’t you just leave it with your knowledge that kids don’t tire of his characters. If he has brought pleasure to your child, shouldn’t you be just be grateful for his work, rather then postulating moronic theories about Mike’s artistic insecurity and lessoning relevance and dropping references to his personal life for no reason other then introduce and perhaps give legs to crap gossip that has not received any dramatic press coverage?
Get over yourself oh,please. It’s a comment section on a “rumors” website, what better place for rumor and innuendo. Oh yeah, stop using posit, it’s posit-ively pretentious. Myers simply ran out of ideas and dropped a couple of bomb movies on us, no big deal, it’s mot like he’s broke and wandering the streets. If he wants to sit on his huge stack of money and relax, let him.
Mike is the Peter Sellers of our generation(s).
Unless I have missed someone else who does over the top characters. No offense but, do you really know what you are talking about?
As to Mike Meyers relevance. There are many who don’t “get” his humor, but there are many great pictures in this man’s future.
It matters not if it is a vehicle with Dr Evil and his son. It matters not what naysayers and pundits say, or think.
He does what he wants to do (deservedly so)and when he comes up with a concept he wants to pursue- he does it.
Really, it’s not all that confusing.
Pretty simple.
So if he has re-entered the arena I am quite sure he has something specific in mind.
Have you ever considered he makes things he enjoys? Thinks he thinks are funny (even if you don’t get it “Gotham Tommy”?)
Tommy, have you ever considered a career in reviewing infomercials? I think your lack of imagination is ideally suited for that genre.
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
What’s happening? In short, very little. Am I the only one who hopes things stay that way? Some has been wants $20 mil up front to do another old, tired flick full of toilet humor and “shag” jokes that are funny for about as long as it takes to deliver them while you’re hamming it up for the camera. This franchise is done, and long may it stay burred, which the way Hollywood works these days will be another five to eight years, when both the studio and Myers will be so desperate for ideas and work respectively that they’ll consider re-making “The Love Guru” and whatever else Myers has done, all for a roll of quarters or two, if you count the “Nostalgia” gate. And People wonder why I go to movies for the popcorn these days?
The whole Austin Powers/Dr. Evil idiom is over. The studios are right to CYA when it’s a long shot. If Myers needs a little cash he should take whatever they’re offering up front knowing there never will be a back end. Otherwise, Myers needs to reinvent himself or retire.
Indy 4 made almost 800 mil worldwide
Die hard made almost 400 worldwide
Unlike Adam Sandler (who oddly never had his own character franchise) Mike M. doesn’t have a built-in audience, and he’s also never gone “main stream”. His Austin gimmicks are tired and unless he comes back in a clever way, everyone will roll their eyes and wait for whatever Apatow comes out with. Sorry Mikey.
Sandler does not have franchises because he does not want to do sequels.
Believe me, SONY would love to do sequels of any of his hits, but Adam does not to.
“The track record for revived franchises (that aren’t reboots) is not that great. The new installments of Indiana Jones & Die Hard were critical duds that were panned by most audiences as well”
Yes, I’m sure DIE HARD 4 making $383,531,464 at the cinema alone on a $110 million budget, and INDIANA JONES 4 making $786,636,033 at the cinema alone on a $185 million budget really bothered them that critics and “most” audiences panned them. I say “most” because, well, look at those takings.
I hate Austin Powers….but Dr. Evil may be one of the funniest characters ever to grace the screen. I would watch 2 hours of nothing but Dr. Evil and his henchmen bantering back and forth. Heres hoping Vern Troyer lives long enough to play Mini-Me one more time….
The jokes were tired in the bloated second film. I couldn’t even get through the third one. If I hear there’s yet another scene with silhouettes that appear to be pulling things out of their rear ends…I won’t even begin to watch.
“The track record for revived franchises (that aren’t reboots) is not that great. The new installments of Indiana Jones & Die Hard were critical duds that were panned by most audiences as well”
Neither Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Live Free Or Die Hard were critically panned. They both sit around 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. And they were both financially successful.
Your argument is invalid. Try again.
To me the Austin Power’s series is legendary comedy. Fantastic humor and of a much more respectable nature against a lot of the comedy repertoire we see today. … If Meet The Parents can be as high grossing as it was and yet produce 2 low quality sequels, then Austin Power’s 4 should go ahead. I can see the film doing very well and bringing back some of its huge popularity.
Maybe Judd Appatow & his posse could help Meyers reinvent this tired franchise.
And let’s not forget the amazing Mindy Sterling !!!
Thanks, Mindy Sterling’s manager!!!
X)
I still want a “Sprockets” movie.
Seconded…
Diter as the villain in Zoolander 2: Rise of The Black Turtleneck Cult…Ha!
what i think would be cool, but this is pure fan boy fantasy thinking, is if mike took a few scene stealing bit parts in some major films to really remind america (and the world) what he’s capable of. and then he can do either another austin powers movie or one surrounding an entirely new character with a full head of steam behind him.
but that’s just wishful thinking.
Chris Tucker? ‘Wildly talented’? Are you high?
“Chris Tucker? ‘Wildly talented’? Are you high?”
As I read this, I had to quickly change the channel from “The Fifth Element.” A film that was severely compromised by the inclusion of the annoying and untalented Chris Tucker.
He needs to start shooting the film this fall for a 2012 or 2013 release or just end the series immediatly. Time’s running out for Myers.
Don’t forget the James Bond reboot, the various profitable horror remakes–sorry! Reboots. Batman, spiderman, star wars (let’s face it, the “prequels” were more like horrible reboots. X-Men…. People like to see their favorite characters on the screen.
Mm is working on script for Love Guru 2
Yes! Finally, Pitka is back for another crazy, wacky adventure! The world has been waiting for this day to come! I’m “tuggin my puddha” in anticipation! Will Jessica Alba lose the Toronto Maple Leafs again??? Oh boy!
“Wildly-talented Chris Tucker”…
Are you viewing films in an alternate universe these days?
The idea, the budget all come before a lack of self confidence can be resolved. Do the first, go back to your instincts, rely on words, not effects and digital mayhem, you don’t need a big budget for big laughs, control yourself, be as frugal as one of your characters, invent more; it’s your nature and avoid pissing people off. Try that ….
Tell that to George Lucas. Star Wars made truckloads of money on all “5″ sequels. Now that’s a franchise. I’m just saying.
