EXCLUSIVE: The studio says it never officially has given the sequel a production state date. Fox was looking at a Fall 2011 start date for the Christopher McQuarrie script for Wolverine 2 starring Hugh Jackman and directed by James Mangold. But now that may push back to Spring 2012. The screenplay mostly takes place in Japan. But studio insiders tell us it’s hard finding just where to shoot in Japan these days because of weather-related considerations. Now the location might switch to Canada or become a combination of the two countries. But we’re also hearing that the start date will wait until after Jackman finishes making Les Miserables. There’s no question that 20th Century Fox wants the pic badly and has been trying to get its sequel to the X-Men spinoff The Wolverine rolling for quite awhile now. In June it landed director Mangold after Darren Aronofsky bowed out in March, ending one of the most competitive contests among Hollywood helmers for a major studio film. That set up the studio thinking that it could begin production in the fall.

If Fox doesn’t shoot this in Japan, then the story they’re adapting serves zero purpose. Good to know the studio is about to kill a great story by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.
Lazy, cheap idiots.
“not filmed in Japan” doesn’t mean “not set in Japan”.
Ever heard of SETS?
Production office is already up and running in Canada… Not sure how that fits into the idea that they “might” switch locations to Canada.
Rather than being “lazy cheap idiots” I think it has more to do with Japan now being a radioactive, aftershock prone quake zone with Trillion$ in infrastructure damage.
Still waiting for them to push the start date to never.
Agreed about it not being shot in Japan…
What is this going to be, a prequel to the 2000 X-MEN film?
God, I’m so sick of the Donner/Singer X-Men.
PLEASE reboot this franchise!
20th Century Fox just wants to keep the rights to the X-Men property. That’s why we’re getting FIRST CLASS and more mediocre Hugh Jackman “Logan” movies; if they don’t keep making them, they lose the rights.
Marvel NEEDS to reclaim its most popular comic and get it into the hands of a studio willing to make a REAL X-Men movie.
Who the hell would want to take the risk of sticking around radioactive Japan, with its contaminated food, water, and air for what could be weeks or months?!
Money now, cancer later? No thanks.
John Wayne would do it.
Does this mean Fox will be fast tracking Die Hard 5 sooner than expected?
Too much delay can wear the fans out, no matter how good the movie is going to be.
They need to start in November and shoot in Vancouver and some second unit in Japan. They have a great script, director, Hugh and know who to cast as the Japanese actors. No reason to stall.
Start the movie!
probably also has something to do with Mark Bomback doing a crappy rewrite of McQuarrie’s script
After the awful first part why are people even expecting this movie?
Because it completely ignores the first part, is supposed to be based on one of Wolverine’s quintessential storylines (as opposed to the other X-films making crap up), and because this script was apparently good enough to have had big name or high quality directors vying to make it.
THE LAST SAMURAI was mostly filmed in New Zealand. The people of Japan didn’t notice or mind so much as they sent it on to a box office greater than its American gross.
That’s $456,758,981 according to Box Office Mojo.
Worldwide, I mean.
I hope that in The Wolverine, they include some of the following characters:
Albert, Melita Garner, Tyger Tiger (Jessan Hoan), Itsu, Amiko Kobayashi, Rancor, X-23, Mariko Yashida, Yukio
I look forward to seeing some of the following villains in this:
Bloodscream, Chimera, Abraham Cornelius, Cyber, Daken, Genesis, The Gorgon, Malcolm Colcord, Matsu’o Tsurayaba, Mister X, Nitro, Nuke, Ogun, Omega Red, Red Right Hand, Romulus, Roughouse, Shiva, Shingen Yashida, Taskmaster, Weapon XI, Wendigo, Wild Child
Lucky for you, every single one of them will be in it!
If Fox were smart they’d start already. Shoot at Mammoth Studios in Vancouver and some Japan exteriors or like another poster said, a New Zealand unit. The script is solid, the fans are primed, Mangold is right director, Hugh is ready.
I hate delays. It’s the mark of people who don’t know what they’re doing. Just switch to Canada and keep it moving.
Reading these comments shows just how uneducated people truly are out there.
1. The movie was always shooting in Canada and Japan. Based in Canada for the rebate, hence why there is already a production office and staff set up there. Also most sets and Japan exteriors were to be shot there because of the topography.
2. Not all of Japan is a radioactive mess. Please stop getting your news off internet gossip sites and conjecture. Most of Japan is completely fine. If you really want to insist it’s destroyed, how about you do the same about NY from their MASSIVE earthquake the other day. It’s beyond repair, right?
3. This script is MASSIVELY different then any previous incarnations – and Bomback hit it out of the park. If you ever read either of the scripts, you might know this.
Until you’ve produced a movie yourself, you don’t know the issues involved. The studio is neither lazy nor cheap. They are looking out for their actors and crew in looking for an alternative to shooting in Japan. It takes a lot of coordination to get all the moving pieces of a film together, especially one as big as this.
“Weather-related issues” may really mean “radiation”. Although a melted-down nuclear plant would be an ideal location for any X-Men franchise.
Having said that, it seems that the appetite for another WOlverine movie may be waning. I like Hugh Jackman, but I think he’s pretty much shown us the range of this character in 5 films already (he was uncredited in “X-Men: First Class”), maybe it is time to move on to something else.
Of course, that can only mena one thing: time for Disney to reboot Wolverine with some 25-year-old playing Logan as a moddy teenager – “Twilght: Wolverine”. Yikes!
