EXCLUSIVE: HBO has bought Valentine, a half-hour comedy script from writer Bryan Sipe and producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, with Kevin Bacon attached to executive produce and potentially star. Additionally, Sipe has signed on to do a re-write on the Parkes/MacDonald-produced feature The Kid Who Knew Too Much for Paramount, a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1934 and 1956 movies.
Valentine, which Sipe wrote on spec, centers on Johnny Valentine, the role that would be played by Bacon. With three ex wives and his glory days behind him, Johnny Valentine is the new voice of talk radio. He’s not on the left, the right, or the middle, he’s on the bottom. Sipe is executive producing with Parkes/MacDonald Prods.’ Parkes, MacDonald and Ted Gold as well as Bacon and his manager David Schiff.
This is the se
cond HBO half-hour project that is being developed for Bacon to star, along with a single-camera comedy based on Clint McCown’s 1995 book The Member-Guest, which has a new writer, Neil LaBute. Additionally, Bacon is executive producing the Showtime drama series project The Booths, a drama about Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth and his brother. On the feature side, WME-repped Bacon just wrapped Billy Bob Thornton’s Jayne Mansfield’s Car and will next do R.I.P.D. Sipe, repped by UTA and manager Brad Mendelsohn, first worked with UTA-repped Parkes/MacDonald last year when he developed with the company drama pilot script Americano for NBC.

didn’t brian sipe play for the cleveland browns in the 80′s?
Sipe actually started in the late 70′s, replacing Mike Phipps. Sipe was the QB for the “Kardiac Kids” era, featuring Pruitt, Newsome, and Clay Matthews Sr.
Don’t think it’s the same Sipe–unless it’s Big Bri’s kid?
Sipe is a great writer and a wonderful guy. So happy to see him on fire!! Couldn’t be better-deserved.
Nice to see Bacon getting some attention. He’s one of the bravest actors around, taking some very unattractive roles (“The Woodsman”) and doing a lot with them. I think he’s on the Jeff Bridges career trajectory: someone who’s good at what they do, dependable, and not flashy (the role serves the film, not the actor), who will start receive acclaim and recognition only later in his lengthy career.
Is it me or are there daily pilot doings happening at HBO. They seem to buy a lot of script and very little seems to get on the air.
Sipe is an amazing writer! His script DEMOLITION is one of the best written scripts in recent years. Uber-talented!
This idea sounds like a perfect script for HBO and Kevin bacon. Well done to Brian Sipe for coming up with such a refreshing idea. I know I’ll be watching when this one goes.
Sipe’s a craftsman. His scripts for DEMOLITION and AMERICANO build effortless story over damn-it-I-do-have-issues drama and if-I-don’t-laugh-I’ll-cry comedy. He’s also a fine gardener.
Bravo to an old family friend. Well deserved. I hope it goes through the roof. It is good to see talent finally implemented — way beyond found.
Bryan used to come into my boss’s office and he was always one of the nicest guys to come in…very rare in this industry. He’s incredibly talented and I look forward to watching!
