TCA: Fox Sets Date For ‘X-Factor’ Finale
UPDATED: The incomparable Simon Cowell met the TCA press from afar — via satellite from an undisclosed location that looked suspiciously like a luxury yacht at sea — to promote his latest Fox singing competition to hit America, The X Factor, which arrives needing little plugging. Early on, he confirmed that he’s in talks with Mariah Carey for a mentor-type role on the series that will air Tuesday and Wednesday nights each week beginning Sept. 21. “There are certain sections of the show that I’m hoping Mariah will get involved in,” he said. “She’s been enthusiastic (to be a part of the show) from day one. But then she selfishly got pregnant, which is why she didn’t end up as a judge.”
Cowell also was asked early on in the session to address the Cheryl Cole fiasco, wherein the popular judge on the British X Factor was brought to the U.S. version, only to get bounced after a single taping. “A few of us made the decision while we were filming the show that we felt Cheryl was going to be more comfortable doing the UK show than the American show. Unfortunately, when the story went public, negotiations fell apart. But she was offered the chance to come back to America. But for certain reasons, she decided not to. I guess that’s what happens when you make reality TV. Real things happen. It doesn’t always go your way.” Cowell dismissed speculation that any friction between Cole and fellow judge Paula Abdul may have played a role in Cole’s ouster. “If not getting along with Paula was a factor, I wouldn’t be on the show,” he said.
Several critics at the session wondered if Cowell, despite his appearance of supreme confidence at all times, had any concerns about X Factor effectively co-existing with American Idol as the fall version of Idol‘s spring invasion. “I see it in the same way as movies,” Cowell stressed. “In one year, you can have 10 great movies, while in other years you don’t. Or drama snows. There are a lot of dramas over a one-year period. The idea that there was only going to be one singing competition in America was crazy. The Voice came along as well and did a good job.” As for how X Factor will differ from Idol, he noted: “We see this as a game-changer. We’re going to try and change the rules. We’re going to find a completely different kind of contestant. … The shows are completely different.” Later, Fox reality guru Mike Darnell appeared on the panel with the judges and fellow producers and emphasized that he made no demands that the British X Factor be overly Americanized. “I actually told him to make it more English,” he said.
Cowell confirmed, “We didn’t change too much. Mike Darnell wanted to lower the age range down to 12, and when we thought about it we realized he was 100% right. … You’re going to see a surprising amount of stars in that age range this year.” Soon after Abdul appeared on the stage this morning, the fur typically began to fly in the good-natured sniping back and forth with Cowell. Abdul was asked what it’s like being back working with Cowell following her notorious departure from Idol. “It’s nice to be back in a demented relationship,” she said. “It’s like home.” Hardly missing a beat, Cowell shot back, “I think it’s more like The Exorcist 2.” Abdul later added, “Simon has turned into a pussycat.” Still later, Cowell observed of Abdul, “Everybody deserves a third chance.” Abdul (muttering): “Go away…go away…”
Fox had earlier announced that the X Factor winner would be featured in a Pepsi Super Bowl spot next February. And Cowell added that the victor also would be receiving $5 million in cash. Further, there will be a 2 1/2-hour “supersized” live edition of the show coming, likely in October.

This show hasn’t even hit the air yet and Simon is already taking a page out of every other music show’s playbook.
I guess it’s hard to come up with new ideas these days… it certainly puts a chink in his armor.
This show will be a gigantic success.
Just how many talent shows do we really need? When there was only one or two, the winners might have had a pretty good shot at stardom. But c’mon, the average person doesn’t even recall the winner of the most recent spate of shows.
These shows are popular, of course, because they are relatively cheap to produce. The “talent” is free. The judges may be paid well individually, but as a percentage of the overall production, it is low. And the sets are starting to look pretty much alike and generic.
I’d rather see a North American version of the Eurovision song contest. At least there it is about bothj performance and composition. Today’s so-called “talent” shows mostly feature singers that engage in over-the-top vocalizations, not singing.
Cowell’s explanation still doesn’t add up. Basically he panicked that Cheryl wouldn’t be a hit with audiences and lined up Nicole as a “co-host” and after one taping hit that panic button and missed out on a charming judge that won over the UK and settled for a judge who’s a C Lister leftover from Dancing With The Stars and The Sing Off and can’t get a solo career off the ground.
Dont’ get me wrong, X-Factor will pull in HUGE ratings but Cheryl at least had potential to be a hit with US audiences where Nicole has been around for YEARS and will always be “that chick from the Pussycat Dolls”.
What confuses me is why he’s so intent on Mariah Carey being a part of the show. Has he seen her on QVC recently? She’s a disaster! We lose out on the charming Cole and instead get the breast implant disaster that is Mariah? Terrible.
Mariah carey is the best singer ever so there’s no doubth that she is so deserved to be one of the judge in that show
The uk audience, generally, is sick of Cheryl Cole. She’s not charming. She’s petulant and sulky, especially when she doesn’t get her own way. She never would have lasted in the US. She was fired fit not being good enough, simons comments are purely for the UK media who are obsessed with Cheryl. Simon can’t afford to be hated by them as he still has a uk x factor that he needs to be a success.
The reason Nicole is on the x factor is because she was a success on the UK one. We’ve seen her outside the pussycat dolls, the real nicole. Her solo career is doing well in the uk and she can get to no1 while the x factor was not on in the uk, which is something Cheryl is still yo do.
Hahaha, poor little lair, sorry but in the UK Cheryl Cole is a runnaway success, with her debut album and also her second album hitting number one. Nicole can’t say that….
Simon and Paula together again how boring, it’s so American Idol been there, done that, so i’ll pass
Having Mariah Carey on the U.S. X-Factor is a HUGE HUGE HUGE get for Simon Cowell if it actually makes it happen!
I didn’t say that Cheryl wasn’t a success. But she’s on the way down now. People are generally getting sick of the constant media coverage.
And Cheryl’s whole solo career is down to the X Factor. Now she’s off it, she won’t do as well. Being on a tv show weekly will boost your career. Look at J Lo on American Idol. She had a great resurgence because of it. In fact, its probably the only reason she took the job. It’s why Nicole took the US X factor job.
And Nicole’s single got to no 1 when the X Fsctor wasn’t on. Cheryls flopped coming in about no 20 when the Flood was released after the X factor had finished.
Cheryl Cole would’ve made the show much more interesting. Nicole is boring as seen on DWTS, Search for the Next Pussycat Doll, etc.
I LOVE MARIAH, NO MATTER HOW GOOFY SHE GETS AT TIMES. WELL, WHO DOESN’T? THAT DOESN’T TAKE AWAY THE FACT THAT SHE IS A SUPER SINGER, WITH HER OWN PERSONALITY. SHE WILL BE GREAT FOR THE SHOW, AND ALL THOSE HATERS OUT THERE WILL TUNE IN, TO SEE HER DO GOOD, OR TO CRITISIZE. EITHER WAY IT GOES, IT’S GOOD FOR THE RATINGS! LOVE YOU MARIAH!!!!!! AS THE SONG SAYS: I WILL FOLLOW YOU, NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO!!!!!
I am so sick of Cheryl Cole, what is the fascination? she will hang on to anyone with a name or anyone who knows someone with a name just to get famous in the USA. She cannot sing for love or money but looks pretty – well if that is talent then she has got it. At least Maria and Nicole can sing and Nicole did better on the UK X Factor with her fair comments unlike Cheryl who puts people through who fail their auditions and the ones who don’t, she sends them home. Cheryl is not England’s sweetheart, if that was so, why after opening a charity with Prince Philip was she NOT invited to the Royal Wedding? Posh and Becks were, even Peter Andre was invited. Vera Lynn, as far as I know, was named the ‘nation’s sweetheart’ and deservedly so. I don’t mind a singer or a personality getting that title but of all the stars England has, we are supposed to call Cheryl Cole the nation’s sweetheart? why exactly? for doing what? She comes across as gorgeous but quite greedy for fame and money. She makes nasty remarks about other stars but yet no-one is allowed to say boo aboout Cheryl Cole. It would be great if we gave the same time and coverage to our soldiers, doctors and nurses.
