The idea that New Jersey taxpayers are helping to enable the Jersey Shore gang to party hearty and get their fight on isn’t sitting well. “I can’t believe we are paying for fake tanning for Snooki and The Situation, and I am not even sure $420,000 covers that,” Assemblyman Declan O’Scanlon told the Newark Star-Ledger. A Democratic state Senator and an Italian American group today called on Republican Gov. Chris Christie to block the tax credit awarded yesterday to the MTV hit reality show’s production company 495 Productions. “It is disparaging to Italian Americans. He should veto it, ” said state Sen. Joe Vitale. A spokesman for the governor said that Christie doesn’t like the show and opposed the tax credit yet has no control over the decision. And not everyone is against it. In Seaside Heights, where the show is filmed, the mayor said even though Jersey Shore can show the state in a negative light, the investment pays big local dividends. “A lot of the business folks here appreciate that,” he said.

Wow. Free Agents sucked!
Here’s where the tax credit concept is a potential misfire for the state of New Jersey.
State tax credits were created to stimulate runaway production as well as to assist a great deal of independently produced productions that lack the necessary step financing to bridge their gap needs. It’s been successfully utilized by both independents and studios alike… and unsuccessfully abused by entertainment shortsellers.
JERSEY SHORE has generated about $580.2 MILLION in operating profits in 2010 according to estimates by SNL Kagan. We can expect a similar, if not larger financial growth for 2011 based on ratings jumps alone reflecting in higher ad sales.
Unless the state of New Jersey is getting a piece of the pie to give offset state taxpayer contributions for state overhead needs or the show employs a large number of NJ locals, should they be really giving tax credits to a publicly traded company such as Viacom to offset costs for one of their highest profiting cable television franchises?
There’s nothing wrong with supporting growth of success, yet there is certainly a time to stop breastfeeding the grown ups.
tourism revenue. every time they show a wide shot of the house or the JS kids walking around theres crazy crowds all around them. heck, even i want to spend a week clubbing at karma becuz of the show. seaside businesses have more than made up for those tax credits.
This is a non story. It’s all about the tax credits for all the tv and films that are made in these cities. Like now we have to use morals on how we pick shows that get the incentives?? What is this world coming to?? Lol I thought you people knew how the industry works gssh
Yeah the show undoubtedly stimulates the seaside economy directly abd indirectly many fold to what the tax break is. It is a no brainer finacial decision.
Governments should not be picking abd choosing which legal businesses get tax breaks based on whether or not they like the entertainment.
