EXCLUSIVE: ABC has bought one of its most ambitious projects so far this development season — a globetrotting adventure from North Country writer Michael Seitzman and producer Mark Gordon. Based on the Jack West Jr. book series by best-selling Australian action thriller novelist Matthew Reilly, The Seven Wonders is a treasure hunt show in the spirit of Raiders of the Lost Arc and National Treasure. It centers on an unlikely five-member team led by commando-turned-archeologist Jack West Jr.
as they search the world for seven pieces of an ancient and powerful relic and along the way form a unique non-traditional family that includes West Jr.’s 12-year-old adopted daughter. Seitzman will write the pilot script for the project, whose first season will be based on the first 2 books in the series, The Seven Ancient Wonders (Seven Deadly Wonders in the U.S.) and The Six Sacred Stones. Seitzman got on board to adapt the novels the moment he read them. “They feel like big boyhood and girlhood adventure stories; they are really fun and remind me of all the movies in the genre I loved,” Seitzman said. He called the novels “a mixture of history and historical truth and carefully drawn-out plausible fiction.” Seitzman is writing the project under the new two-year deal he signed with ABC Studios in May. He will executive produce it with frequent collaborator Gordon, who also renewed his overall deal at the studio in the spring. This is Seitzman’s second project at ABC this season. He is also writing/executive producing family soap Americana which, like Seven Wonders, is produced by ABC Studios and the Mark Gordon Co. WME-repped Seitzman was in a similar situation 3 years ago when he also developed 2 shows for ABC Studios with Gordon, Empire State and House Rules, both of which were picked up to pilot by ABC and CBS, respectively. The Mark Gordon Co. also is having a busy selling season. In addition to The Seven Wonders, the company just sold light romantic procedural Winging It to ABC. In the vein of Hitch, the project, written by Ron Bass and Jen Smolka, follows a disparate but lovable group of expert relationship coaches (wingmen) as they struggle to bridge the gap that technology has built between people. Also in the hopper at ABC is another Mark Gordon Co.-produced dating project, comedy Status Update from Friends With Benefits writers Keith Merryman and David Newman, and another comedy, Scott King’s Stuck In Reverse.

FOX had one a few years ago that was like the Davinci Code. This, like all the others, sound like a great idea but just too hard to make for network tv. Hope they prove me wrong.
There was a show I liked on ABC back in 2003 called Veritas: The Quest, but it got cancelled after 4 episodes.I wonder if this is anything like it.
Really? In the Riley books the Americans & the Europeans are the bad guys! & it’s the smaller countries (Australia, Ireland, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand & the United Arab Emirates) that have to stop them. I’m guessing they’ll throw all that out the window?
I hope to god they don’t
I became bored reading the description of the show.
Is that a good thing?
Seitzman is such an average writer. What does that say?
If he’s an “average writer,” then I am seriously screwed because I am nowhere near his level.
I gotta agree with Ira. You can say he’s a feature guy. You can say he’s never done a TV show. You can say nothing he’s done has been blockbuster. But if you’ve actually read his scripts there is no way you can claim he’s an average writer. You’d be hard pressed to find a working Hollywood writer under 50 who can create character voices better than Seitzman can. Pick up his Empire State pilot script and just read the opening scene.

I hear Reilly is not that bigger deal down in Oz anyway. Be curious to see how this does.
And of course, EVERY action/adventure novel these days has to have an Indy type lead, and be in the vein of National Treasure and Raiders.
Groan.
To man66
Matthew Reilly is massive here in Australia so get your facts right, and also a lot of us here in Australia are freaking excited to see his Jack West Jr novels get turned into a tv show albeit a movie would’ve been better but we have been waiting since Area 7 for one of his books to be turned into something on the big screen.
im with you buddy, Matthew Reilly rocks… I’ve read all he has done so far and love it.
this will a be fantastic TV series. They should also be doing the Scarecrow series
Oi we LOVE Matt Reilly across the ditch to mate!!!!…. if none of you haters and doubters have read his books then do yourselves a favour!…… Reilly stories ROCK!….. Forget Indy….. forget National Treasure….Jack West Jnr is KING…..and he’ll save us all!
haha right on brother
Im actually stoaked that they’re making them as a TV series. A big budget movie would have looked great but would have felt rushed and would have missed a LOT of the character development needed. As a TV series they can spend more time on these things – As a movie the length would be 3 hours MAX. As a series can make 8/9 1 hour episodes and cover a lot more. Cant wait to see my favorite books bought to life, hopefully the script writers/producers/actors can do these great books justice!!
Tips for who they cast as Jack West Jr????
I’ve always said Hugh Jackman to play him, but that was based on a movie idea. If you want someone else, maybe go with Liam Hemsworth, or Chris, or Sam Worthington, hoping they haven’t got anything better to do.
Matthew Reilly had me hooked on the first book and everyone i know has at least one of his books , i wouldn’t be surprised if half our population are reading Matthew Reilly books
I am another Aussie who is absolutely thrilled to hear that Matthew Reilly’s books are being made into a tv series. To the uneducated Man66, Matthew Reilly is one of Australia’s best authors. He has done what J.K.Rowling has done to so many children – he has made them interested in reading. As an English teacher, I could not be more thrilled about this! I can not wait until more Matthew Reilly books are released as tv series or movies, especially Contest, Hovercar Racer, and the Scarecrow series.
To any haters out there, you do not have to watch the series, but I can guarentee you will be missing out! Go Aussie Authors!!!
I have read all of Matthew Reilly’s books and every single one, I could not put down. I have nearly finished his newest novel and personally I cannot wait for this TV series to come out in the UK. Anyone that complains doesn’t have to watch the show. I just wish I knew when that would be!
I’m from Canada and I’ve read all Reilly’s books and I have to say the are fantastic. Cannot wait for the TV Series to come out.
I agree with you
Reilly’s books are some of the best, most wonderfully written books I’ve ever read. The more I read them, the more I want to read them again!!
So I’m pretty excited about the Jack West series coming to life on television. I cant wait to know more about its production, its casting, airing date etc etc…!!
And there isnt one person I know, who has read his book once and hasnt gone back to reading it again.
So no matter how people view him, he’ll always be NUMBER ONE AUTHOR to me and his loyal fans, here, in India.
If a writer of his caliber isnt BIG, then no one else is.
Um, hello, man66, I agree with amy – Matt Reilly is Australia’s NUMBER ONE BEST SELLING AUTHOR! Does that sound like he’s not big to you? Everytime he releases a new book it goes straight to number one on Australian best sellers lists. Is that not big enough for you? he’s a bloody genius writer and will always be Australia’s best. He’s fricken awesome and I hope this goes well cause I love the Jack West Jr. books.
Yes, exactly; MR Forever!! XD
Oh really? ….and exactly WHERE do you hear that?? …
oh i know! ..from under a rock :/
read his books knobjockey and then post
Matthew Reilly is an awesome writer and hopefully they dont alter his story to satisfy the american ignorance. And the fool that said he was not that big a deal shows how ignorant they are.
How much you want to bet that all the exotic places they visit while globetrotting will look amazingly like Vancouver?
This is the first outside the box buy I’ve heard of this dev season that seems to belong on network TV. It’s been a very strange buying season this year. Other than the cops, lawyer and doctor shows it seems like the networks are trying new things, but mostly with ideas that seem more cable oriented shows. I’m sort of confused why that is, since the networks are just going to cancel those shows when they get cable numbers. Unlike the Shawn Ryan nuclear missile / island nation show, this seems like the big sort of show that could actually do well for more than six episodes.
I’d say Shawn Ryan’s series is the ONLY out of the box idea this season… when you walk into a room and compare your show to Raiders of The Lost Ark and National Treasure, you’re not exactly walking unfamiliar territory.
Anyone who uses the words “history, truth” or “carefully drawn-out plausible fiction” when describing Matthew Reilly’s books needs their head examined.
You either haven’t read his books, or if you have, you haven’t taken the time to read the Reilly interviews he does at the back of the books. He admits he’s skewed history a little for the purposes of the book…hell, if you’ve read the Jack West series, you should KNOW this because of the overarching events in the three books.
And if you haven’t read the books and are going off of hearsay and/or backcover blurbs…best you sit down and be quiet, lest you make a fool of yourself.
I have to agree with JaySmack here. MR writes fun books, but “plausible” should never be associated with his books. I pretty much have to turn off the analytical side of my brain to read his books so that I don’t end up with a massive list of errors and violations of reality.
Still, like I said, he writes fun books, and I think that they would do well as a TV show with the right writer, director and budget.
here here
Sounds pretty good to me, its not a cop show or a reality show. Seems like it will be a fun show
Matthew Reilly is known down here as someone who writes fast paced exciting stories – they almost read like scripts. They are a pretty big deal down here because they are credited with getting teenage boys reading again.
Hope they can make this series just as exciting as the books are.
I agree, Matthew Reilly’s books got this OLD boy reading again
I LOVE Matthew Reilly and I’m thrilled that he’s finally getting a show! I hope they make it work!
Yeehaww! Can’t wait for this and can’t wait for a new Jack West Jr book. On a plus side, Scarecrow is coming to town again in October!
Yeah! Scarecrow’s coming home this Oktober! …Can’t wait XD
Please make it at least two seasons, I want to see an end to the series instead of the end that the book SSS gives us. I will not spoil it. Don’t cancel it until you finish at least the Dark Sun trilogy.
I have been reading Matthew Reilly well before he became no 1 he is a great writer.
If you have not read one of his books then you really don’t have any grounds to make an educated judgement. His books are very action backed and I wait every year for his next release.
It will be interesting to see how they put his books into a series but why caste judgement beforehand.
It is obvious some of you have nothing better to do then cruxify people before they are given a chance or without any knowledge.
SO EXCITED. I really love Matthew Reilly’s stuff, and he seems like such a nice guy as well – really happy for him! I’m glad that it’ll be a drama rather than a movie, because then all the action scenes won’t get squished together and look rushed – now they can just end them on cliffhangers each episode… which I suppose is what they want.
I’m not too sure about this. It would of been better to see it turned into a movie because to tell the truth, t.v companies DO NOT have an awful lot of money like Hollywood, so the effects in these soon-to-be episodes will be a bit shit. Then again, I am not really a fan of the Jack West series, but of the SCARECROW ones. The novel SCARECROW is right now being drafted by Matthew Reilly and being turned into a BLOCKBUSTER action movie. I hope to Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Buddah that it tops BLOODY AVATAR. I’m sick of that shit. The only reason it won best picture was because of the effects. Come on, not fair, considering that THE DARK KNIGHT should of won, or SHERLOCK HOLMES for that matter.
Anyway, I have just finished SCARECROW AND THE ARMY OF THIEVES and loved it. If it is turned into a movie, it will either be R18+ or X20+. Really violent and not for the faint of heart.
Matthew Reilly is an outstanding author, I do hope the show does justice to his material. If you haven’t read his original works I’d really recommend them – they’re fast paced and keep you hooked right until the final page. I’m Australian and I can safely say he’s very popular at home – there’d be an army of us fans on the warpath if this isn’t done right! The structure of the novels would probably transcend well to screen now that I think about it, there’s lots of cliffhangers to work with. Anyway, can’t wait to see it – so glad someone has picked up the rights!
im a new zealander, can I play Sky Monster please…haha
thank you Matthew Reilly you got me reading again, love your books, short stories and I am looking forward to Jack West jr series and Scarecrow movie. Wahoo! hey I woud dress in drag to be Mother in the scarecrow movie haha
I was introduced to the Matthew Reilly books by my son-in-law.
WOW! was all I could think after the first few pages of ‘Temple’. This would make an awesome movie especially the 2 stories in one concept that link together. I have since read the Jack West trilogy. I have always liked to read but could always put a book down until these.
I really hope this series is done well as it has great potential to put Matthew Reilly up where he should be with the likes of Alistair Maclean and Tom Clancy.
If you have not read one of his books then you must before you can make a fair comment.
They are excellent.
Just finished “The five greatest warriors” after finishing Six sacred stones and the whole 3 book series rocked! Sure you have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit but it is what it is….fast paced adventure that keeps you hooked and turning the pages. To see it on TV and done well would be fantastic.
Matthew Reilly is not Shakespeare. He knwos that, his fans know that. Ar ehis books plausible?? Not even close. Are they great ‘rides’ ?? – HELL YES!
His books are exactly like fast paced action rides. I honeslty don’t know how a TV series could keep up with the pace to be honest. I’m also a litle suprised a US TV company picked up the Jack West Jnr rights when the ‘hero’ is an Aussie – and you bastards better not change him to a seppo or ‘its on’ as we say around here
When Reilly’s biggest character, who is the hero of the ‘Scarecrow’ series of books and is a US Marine.
I will be furious if the American film industries’ ego decides to change the plot and make America the heros of the story or make them allies to Jack West the younger (qoute by Carnivore in The Five Greatest Warriors.
Personally I would be thrilled if they didn’t make his fantasic novels into what will most likely be a realy bad tv series and will probably end up with the same fate that fell upon the television series, “Wild Boys”
The only thing that should be done to his novels, is that they should be turned into movies.
Also going on off what Jarrod said a bit less than half way down the page. Jarrod you said that you could get much more in with a television series. You are mistaken. As everyone would know what happened to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” it was divided up into two parts. At first I disliked what the producers of the movie had done, but the more I watched that movie, the more i respected and understood their decision. They made an effort to make a movie of it, whilst at the same time not leaving too much out from the book.
Also WHEN they make his novels into movies, they better not pick any novel in the Scarecrow or in the Jack West Jnr series, THEY MUST START FROM THE FIRST NOVEL IN THE SERIES.
I am only 15 years old and a big fan of Matthew Reilly and his magnificent writing skills.
I kinda agree with you… TV series might not do justice to the vivid imagination his books paint.
Most times, even movies dont do justice to wonderful books – Eragon and Harry Potter are good examples.
But since I am a big time fan of Japanese anime and animated movies and animated TV series, I really feel that only an animated series could do justice to Reilly’s books. Seriously, this way, the plot could stick to the original without too much of alteration or editing, the characters could be designed to every inch of their description in the books, all the complex stunts would be easier to execute, and so on…
The best part? This medium would reach out to a whole lot of middle and high school kids, who enjoy watching anime and animated series, but lack the interest to read. This medium would also help push a lot of people to go back to their books and start reading again
Honestly, I’m not sure if I want to see Matthew Reilly’s storys on tv/theaters. They are so awesome and unique and I don’t think there is any way they could make the series/movie even half as good as the books. It’s like Harry Potter: The books were great but the movies not so much…
I really hope they don’t cast any fancy Hollywood actors. They disturb the balance between the characters because they draw too much focus on themselves, instead of blending in.
I sure love Matthew Reilly books a lot… A huge fan of all his books… n from the first book of jack west jr i read, i always see Hugh Jackman as Jack West Jr.
n if this series is made into movies with him as the lead.. it would be a dream come true…
Hw do u guys see it?
I said the same thing in a reply to a comment. But he could be hard to get for a TV series.
