Reba McEntire is returning to TV with Malibu Country, a multicamera comedy starring and executive produced by the country star/actress. ABC has handed out a put pilot commitment to the project, which reunites McEntire with key auspices of her successful 2001 the WB sitcom Reba. Former Reba showrunner Kevin Abbott will write Malibu Country and will executive produce with former Reba executive producers McEntire, Mindy Schultheis & Michael Hanel. In Malibu Country, after her “good ol boy” rock star husband cheats on her and burns through most of their money, Reba (McEntire) divorces him and moves her family from Nashville to the only asset she has left — a little house in Malibu. There she’ll try to reignite her own singing career and keep herself and her three kids from being corrupted by the materialistic and rarefied Malibu world she now calls home. Also exec producing the ABC Studios sitcom are McEntire’s manager Narvel Blackstock; Dave Stewart, formerly of the Eurythmics; and Laura Ziskin Prods’ Pam Williams. This marks the first sale for Schultheis and Hanel’s Acme Prods, which recently inked a deal with ABC Studios. ABC has been bringing back to the fold veteran TV comedy stars including Tim Allen, who stars in new comedy series Last Man Standing this fall, Kirstie Alley, who is toplining a pilot, and now McEntire.

Isn’t Reba a little old for this concept to work? How old are the three kids going to be? And what’s with all the put pilot commitments? It seems like everyone is getting them this season.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Reba could convincingly portray a 45-year old woman, and a 45-year old could easily have pre-teens and teenagers.
There’s alot of pilots each year, I don’t think there’s moore this time around.
Maybe Deadline can do a comparison?
I think that this show will be awesome. Looking forward to the Pilot!
K-Bott for the win!
Two things, who cares how old she is? And second this sounds awesome. I hope it takes off. Reba will kick butt at it I am sure
You’re so right. She’s great at everything she does. Her first show was awesome and this will be to. Hope some of the people from first show come to this one. I wish Brock could play her ex rocker husband and Barbara Jean the other woman.
Gee, I’m sorry to bring like, reality, into it, but why wouldn’t she just sell or rent the Malibu house, and use the money to buy or rent something in a less “materialistic and rarefied” area?
Because then they couldn’t make a show out of it. Duh. [kidding]
Silly, then there wouldn’t be a show!
A fish out of water is funnier than a fish in water.
You already answered your question. If she did that, that would make it a “reality series”. Aren’t there enough of those “unscripted” projects on the tube already?
There sure are. And they’re a lot funnier than most of the tired, old-guard, top-heavy non-writing EP projects that keep getting developed to bore us in prime-time. “Reality” is killing comedy cause it’s cheaper and just as entertaining. it may not make as much money in the long-run, but this is a very short-sighted industry. comedy’s not making a come back no matter what they try to make us believe.
That’s where you’re wrong. Reality is indeed killing but it’s not killing comedy and it’s not killing for those reasons. It’s killing people by sheer boredom because nobody cares about reality. If I want reality, I’ll live my own damn life or if I’m conceited, I’ll tape it. Reality is not funny or entertaining in the slightest and is an easy excuse for the networks to pass any old garbage because it’s cheap. Where’s the @#$%^&* effort. I know this is a rant and also my opinion but I’m tired of reality. IT MUST END like all “good” things do. The end is near
I love Reba!!!! She will never be to old to do anything.
She looks 40 and could have children as young as seven or so.
Can’t wait to see the new show. I never missed any of her old shows.
Okay, guys, I knew all that : )
My real point was that there has to be a better way to get her into Malibu than a lame roll-your-eyes premise. And frankly, I’m a little annoyed at the idea that somehow Nashville is less about money and ambition than Malibu. Really, so musicians move to Nashville for the weather?
On a more serious note, comedy’s still dead may be right, although I hope not. I’m trying to be optimistic and think that maybe the syndication deal for the The Big Bang Theory might–might–have gotten short-sighted executives to start thinking long-term.
Comedy is not dead. What a silly statement. LOL. Comedy is eternal and universal and essential. It’s probably just some toad with a self-interest in “reality,” panicking because another time slot got away from reality stink. Or someone with zero brainwaves. TV is a wasteland of reality shows, there’s never anything to watch. So many people have been driven away from watching tv, hopefully they’ll start bringing back scripted and allow latitude for some inevitable failures before shrieking scripted is “dead” again.
So a woman’s husband cheats on her and she has to adjust to life on her own, raising her kids and making a living…Hmmm, that sounds a lot like the plot of REBA!!! Don’t get me wrong, I actually think Reba is a highly underrated show but at least mix it up more than changing the location and adding music to the show.
Oh. My. God… I’M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!
YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY THAT SHES COMIN BACK
“Reba” was a terrific little sitcom, a lot funnier and more bracing than expected. McEntire slipped into the role like she’s been doing sitcoms for decades. Terrific cast chemistry, too. It could have easily run another couple of season but had the misfortune of appealing to a demo that the CW didn’t care about, despite strong ratings.
And the critics hated it.
But you are right about the CW hating it. It didn’t fit into their whole demographic philosophy which has made them a “narrowcaster” rather than a “broadcaster.”
Making a go of it in Malibu with the kids… too bad Reba wasn’t considered for TWO AND A HALF MEN
Anything Reba and Narvel do is well thought out and I can hardly wait to see the show. Wish them and ABC all the best.
Me tooo!
)))
It’s gonna be great!
I totally agree – but wanted to add one critical point: Reality TV isn’t real. The relationships are contrived, the conflicts are staged, and the people are more often than not in the Industry. I always suspected this but had it confirmed when my nephew and his fiance taped an as-yet unaired pilot and saw with their own eyes what was happening. It is all a twisted scam.
I absolutely LOVE Reba! I think she is wonderful in everything she has done and bravo to her for staying on top so long! She is amazing and her 2001 sitcom was absolutely a success, so I have no doubt that she’ll show everyone who has doubts that she is still the leading lady we all know she has been for the last thirty years. Go get em Reba! Love ya!
Congrats! I’m so excited to have Reba back on TV, her WB/CW show was hilarious and it’s great the the same production team will be behind this one.
Isn’t this just Hanna Montana with a mother around instead of a father?
Nobody ever thought her show on the WB/CW would work and it lasted 6 seasons and did some nice sales on DVD so you never know as everything this woman touches seems to turn into gold.
zoo happy!! best news I’ve heard about pilots this development season yet! This was a great pick by ABC too! This could be a hit! and I loved her old “Reba” series!!!!!!
anyone heard about the new “Docu-reality ” show Troubadour Texas? I hear its about young songwriter artist trying to get to Nashville…..not about someone winning a contest
I thought the writing on the old REBA show was excellent. So was the interaction of the actors.
If the new show is like the old one IT WILL BE GREAT!!!!!!!
I can’t wait for the new show!!!!!!
REBA ! I’m not a fan. I wouldn’t know one of her songs. I may have watched 1 episode of her old sitcom. That said, this woman has had one of the most amazing careers I’ve ever witnessed. We had her on The LEEZA SHOW many times — she was always lovely and genuine. Are there any other examples of country singers (or singers period) who have been able to balance both a music and sitcom career successfully? Hats off to REBA ! She must be loaded $$
I absolutely love Reba’s show. I look forward to watching every morning while getting ready for work. Great comedy! And the script is rich in life lessons. Reba is my favorite show. Excellent cast. Hope it stays on the air forever! I am a huge fan!
You could certainly see your enthusiasm within the work you write. The world hopes for even more passionate writers like you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. At all times go after your heart.
