UPDATE 11 AM: I have learned that, like Nine Lives, ABC Family’s new comedy State of Georgia also has been canceled.
PREVIOUS: ABC Family news kept coming in dribs and drabs all day yesterday: The back-12 episode pickup for The Lying Game, the cancellation of The Nine Lives of Chloe King and the pickup of two new drama pilots, Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Strut and the technology-themed Intercept. This morning, the network made its official announcement, which includes the pickups for Lying Game, drama pilots Strut (now titled Bunheads) and Intercept, as well as the pickup of two comedy pilots — Baby Daddy, from Nine Lives creator Dan Berendsen, and Village People — and the renewal of gymnastics drama Make It or Break It, “in time to ignite Olympic fever,” as ABC Family president Michael Riley put it. The network’s breakout hit this past summer, Switched at Birth, has already been renewed for a second season. “ABC Family expanded its schedule to present three nights of original programming this summer, and we saw our most successful on record, one that gave us our very own ‘triple-threat’ — Switched at Birth, The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Pretty Little Liars,” said Riley. This year, ABC Family delivered its largest summer primetime audience in total viewers (1.48 million) and all key demos. The network has new drama series Jane By Design slated to premiere in early 2012. Here are descriptions of ABC Family’s newly picked-up pilots:
Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is executive producing Bunheads, a one-hour scripted drama about Michelle, a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively marries a man and moves to his sleepy coastal town, and takes an uneasy role at her new mother-in-law’s dance school. “I spent 20 years of my life with my hair in a bun,” Sherman-Palladino said. “I was supposed to be a dancer. My mother was a dancer. Her greatest heartbreak was when I got on Roseanne. So, while writing this will never equal playing ‘Rumpelteazer’ in a bus and truck tour of Cats, it does let me to tip my hat to a really special time in my life.” The project was originally picked up as a cast-contingent pilot last fall with a different writer.
Intercept is a one-hour technology- and action-driven drama about a group of college students who get roped into solving crimes when one of them creates a high-tech communication device that intercepts conversations throughout the West Coast. Intercept will be executive produced and written by Ray Wright (The Crazies).
Baby Daddy, a half-hour comedy from executive producer Dan Berendsen (Hannah Montana: The Movie), is about Ben who, in his 20s, becomes a surprise dad to a baby girl when she’s left on his doorstep by an ex-girlfriend. Ben decides to raise the baby with the help of his mother, his brother, his best buddy and his close female friend, who is harboring a secret crush on him.
Village People, from executive producer Meg DeLoatch (Brothers), is a multi-camera half-hour comedy centering on a single, high-powered career woman who adopts a baby from a teen mother — whom she ends up caring for as well.

Baby daddy sounds exactly like Raising Hope. Like for real?
I second that
Really, Baby Daddy? Really? You just take elements of Raising Hope you took the entire concept of the show!!! Wow. I’d be embarrassed to put my name on this. Why not make him a college student, make the baby a boy, and have him dropped off at his frat house where he is raised by a group of wild college kids? Just throwing that out there. lol
Oh My Gosh JMC… that’s a Great idea. What a great concept and you can only imagine what it could be like. He goes to class with the baby strapped to his back. He’s shooshing his frat buddies becuase the baby is sleeping – finally. They all take to taking shifts watching the baby while he is at class or studying. He would definitely get a LOT of chicks swarming him with “Awwww, what a cute baby.” I really, really love your idea.
YogiDaBear
That IS a great idea. And it took more thought than whoever came up with Raising Hope 2.0 a.k.a. Baby Daddy.
and add something in there about the baby only getting the chicks, when he doesn’t have the kid he is totally ignored by all of the girls
HaHa oh man I would definitely watch that but yea what a shame they have to take someone’s idea and put there name on it.
total coincidence i’m sure
EXACTLY what I thought when I read that!
word
I’m sorry, but “Bunheads???”
i looked up bunhead, i know for a fact we won’t be wasting our time on that show, bring back our nine lives please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if not i guess we will be watching net flex at least they have what we like
Poor Raven. Maybe she’ll realize after this that she’s not a star. Anyone in her role on the Cosby show would have had the same “success”. Not sad to see her go!
Wow what a douche…Raven’s main success came from the widely popular and successful That’s So Raven…before little Miley Cyrus and her Hannah Montana Crap, there was That’s So Raven which held its own to Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens…if you’re going to be a douche, at least have your facts straight.
Glad to hear make it break back love that show and then sad to see Chloe king go and them keeping pretty little liars really?? Switched at birth is good new showes sound eh looking forward I guess most to bunheads because gilmore girls was one of the best shows ever
Chloe King deserved the axe. It’s been a ratings failure since it initially aired.
Of course Pretty Little Liars is sticking around. It’s one of ABC Family’s bigger hits.
you clearly don’t know Chloe King and Pretty Little Liars ratings because PLL rates way way way higher than Chloe King, hence the cancellation.
wow nice comment here buddy lol Pretty Little Liars has been a huge succcess with the books and now the show…the author has even continued to write another series of the books because the show is doing so well and they are going to run out of books to go off of…although they have changed the show around so that people that have read the books won’t know whats going to happen in the show.
and chloe king sucked.
obviously.
I’m am sooooo pleased that Make it or Break it is Back. Yeah. I am having the same feeling I had when they brought 7th heaven back for that last year. I hate they canceled Lincoln Heights it was a very positive show for the black community.
Make it or Break it Yes. I really like PLL and The lying game it is getting a lot more interesting.
I am totally psyched about MIOBI coming back on the air…but idk, I’m not sold on The Lying Game nor am I sold on PLL…I hate these shows that feel the need to keep you guessing the entire freakin season…leave the mystery to a good novel or movie, and let the mystery resolve itself within a couple of episode time span if it must be a mystery based tv show. I’m bored with the whole PPL and The Lying Game show…PPL I think keeps me checking in only for the secret teacher student relationship, that has been somewhat resolved.
Your right, it does sound just like Raising Hope!
I can’t believe State of Georgia isn’t coming back for another season
I loved that show and MajandraD!
Really? I am disappointed for Raven, because she has a lot of natural comedic talent, but I was not surprised the show was cancelled…to me it wasn’t her best comedy…so glad Melissa and Joey are back though!
I watch both, but actually thought Georgia was funnier than M&J.
Was my thought exactly. I think they could come up with a more interesting and less off-putting title for a show.
Glad the lying game is being kept. A shame about Chloe king and I will not comment on miobi or slotat
So happy for MIOBI!
Pretty bummed about chloe king. Actually really bummed about it. Super phsyed about lying game and stoked about miobi
I’ll tune into ABC family when they bring back Middleman.
They cancelled a Raven Show. Take that to TBS and ca ching, more money for Ms. S.
I loved State of Georgia; it was hilarious. Kudos to Raven, Majandra and the aunt who played on ER; her name escapes at the moment. You will all be missed!
Correction: The actress who plays the aunt was on Grey’s, not ER. Apologies
ABC Family should cancel that unrealistic, piece of crap they call the Secret Life of the American Teenager and bring the cancelled CW show The Beautiful Life…I guarantee if you go on youtube and watch the episodes of The Beautiful Life, you guys would be hooked…the show is sooo good, but the CW was horrible in marketing the show for the CW’s fall line up last year…heck I didn’t even know the show was on tv until it had been cancelled. Anyhow I am kinda bummed to that we no longer have 10 things I hate about you, the season 1 finale was really good…and it left all of us fans hanging…ughhhhh
No, Why abc Family Canceled the Best Series, this is a Mistake
Bunheads is a ridiculous name for a show – better change that, pronto. And Raven Symone is fat – she needs to reduce.
She had lost a lot of weight before starring in the show, did you miss that Miffy?
I just don’t understand, what are they thinking?!! Baby Daddy. . . really is right. Come on when are they going to stop with these crap shows about teenage pregnancy and keep interesting unique ones that deserve a chance. Needless to say I’m pretty disappointed about the decision NOT to renew The Nine Lives of Chloe King.
So excited to see what Amy can turn this idea into. I doubt she can ever top Gilmore Girls but I’ll always watch her try.
When I saw the title Bunheads, I thought “oh, is this going to be a series about teenage girls training to be ballet dancers?” You know, like Make It or Break It but with ballet instead of gymnastics.
But the title doesn’t really work for a drama as described…
ABCF losing a big star in raven. she’s one of the best comedianne’s of our generation. the writing here sucked. miss symone needs the right platform to shine. can’t wait to see what’s next!
soooo upset about chole king being cancelled…especially now knowing they are keeping lying game…that is such a terrible show!! and the new piolts they picked up dont sound that appealing to me either…
THe Lying Game totally topped the Nine Lives of CHloe King. YOur just jealous because CHloe King will never be as awesome as the Lying Game.
>_<
Wow! A they cancel a good show. State of Georgia was an amazing show, and Raven is so funny. I can’t believe they canceled it!
Man, daaaank /: State of Georgia was starting to grow on me, not Raven’s best work but ehh
I am totally loving The Lying Game. Although I totally love PLL I didn’t expect to like TLG nearly as much. I am so happy for Make it or Break it too. I think that will grow in popularity as the olympics get closer.
and i agree with everyone…baby daddy is a complete rip off of raising hope which i already actually watch and cant wait for the new season! and nice name … lol
