LOS ANGELES, CA., SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 – Financing and production company Alcon Entertainment is set to remake the 1991 action-thriller POINT BREAK as a feature film for release by Warner Bros, its home studio, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. The Alcon principals secured rights to the project the week of the original film’s 20th anniversary from RGM Media, John McMurrick and Chris Taylor. Kosove and Johnson will produce along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer who also wrote the screenplay (“Salt,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” upcoming “Total Recall”). The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers. State Johnson and Kosove: “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills? Kurt’s take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings.” Adds DeLuca ” ‘Point Break’ wasn’t just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fueled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same for the young 21st!” In addition to the feature rights, Alcon has also secured television and gaming rights to POINT BREAK. The Bigelow original, starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and Gary Busey, was produced by Largo Entertainment and released by Fox.

All of you who are bemoaning the remakes – you’re absolutely right.
But, “Hollywood” will make any movie that an audience will pay to see. Because Hollywood don’t make movies – Hollywood makes money, and no, nothing is sacred in Hollywood.
People complain about no new stories or actors or directors… ad nauseum. They’re right too. But it’s the movie-going audience that’s the problem. Studios, Independents and, hell, even super low budget producers all make these original stories with new faces and talent. Problem is, nobody pays to see most of them. While we, in the industry (most of us Deadline readers anyway), know a good story well told is a gem no matter who made it or who’s in it, but most of America won’t bother unless there’s something familiar in it. These days the term “good” (with regards to films) is more than subjective – it’s relative to who’s doing the judging. For instance, some (okay, a lot of) people actually thought “Transformers 3″ was a good movie.
TV has absolutely the same problem. After all of the faux “reality” shows, the audience just sits there with glazed-over eyes, eating their CheeTos and drinkin’ a beer. Nobody wants to actually think anymore. Too much effort… sadly.
The original script was called “Johnny Utah” and Ridley Scott was attached to direct. Ridley should go back to that original script (which was fantastic) as they shredded that when Point Break was made and the result wasn’t half the film it should have been.
wow, i’d go for it if they had Kathryn Bigelow revisit her own pic, only she could do a remake justice…
Okay, so why call this movie Point Break if it is set in the world of extreme sports? What does that have to do with surfing the break?
I was going to say the same thing. They are throwing out the original movie and just using the title. It’s ridiculous.
You unoriginal bastards!
Ummmmm!!!! Thank you thank you! I thought I was the only one that saw this in the fast and the furious.
I saw a pre-release “focus group” screening of the original, at Fox Studios Zanuck Theater, in 1991. Kathryn Bigelow was there, about 6′tall in dark jean and a black leather jacket….smokin hot. They obviously made her change the ending, because in the version that was shown that night, Bodhi gets away.
The already did Road House 2. I just saw it the other day on Hulu. Original Point Break was good. But please no remake. arrrgg!
Someone used the words sacred and classic in conjunction with a Keanu Reeves movie? One in which Gary Busey and Lori Petty appear?
Keanu Reeves is a modern movie god. Where the hell have you been for the last 20 years? An entire generation has grown up on him. Old people just need to stop working in Hollywood. Seriously. They don’t understand the world today or the viewpoint of younger generations.
Perhaps we should look at rebooting Batman, and remaking Inception next year as well.
2020 may see the arrival of “From the studio that brought you the nine remakes of (Insert 80s film title here)…”
Here!!!Here!!! Make it 3D and I’d pay $45 a ticket!!!
As for Face of Death,it IS being remade. I heard so this week by the guy who used to run Anshutz (sp?) Business.
Happy to see Chris Taylor got a great prod co involved and stays on as producer. He’s a good guy. #NiceGuysFinishFirst
Maybe remakes would lose their lustre if we called them what they really are; cannibalism? And started to refer to anyone involved in a remake as a cannibal? Don’t be afraid of a little hard work, and back original ideas. Down with cannibalism!
Wait, so this is the new corporate strategy? Let’s take every second-rate (and worse) film over the last 20 years – no make it 50 years – and remake/reboot/reimagine/recrap it? The top films we will remake/reboot/reimagine every 5 years in 3D.
Wow, just wow.
It’s ripe for a remake.
Shia LaBeouf, Penn Badgley or Chace Crawford as FBI Agent Johnny Utah
Chad Michael Murray as Bodhi
Simon Pegg or Eddie Izzard as FBI Agent Angelo Pappas
Mischa Barton, Sophia Bush, Kat Dennings or Leighton Meester as Tyler Endicott
Alec Baldwin as FBI Director Ben Harp
Point Break is a classic OVER achiever as a movie. It is one of my favorites. When looking for remakes, seek out UNDER achieving movies or scripts.. And that way there will be a Point to remaking them.
This is Soylent Green. Cannibalizing the past. It’s gotten to the point where its just all downright pathetic.
So this time they’ll be in Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama masks?
Wow another effing remake. Some to good and some really suck. They do better when they are a prequel. But really in a town with so much creativity, it sucks to see one remake after another. Movie dollars maybe up cause prices are up, but attendance is down, and if the corporate tax evading “job creators” (lol) keep putting out these “re-dos” eventually it will kill their bottom line. I’ll note Conan as an example. I thought it was better than the first one. But i was the only one who thought that, cause i was the only one who saw it, lol
No way, bra! That’s not cool, dude! Remaking the original PB? Dude that is cold.
PLEASE STOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP with these remakes!!!!!
Seriously, doesn’t the “brain” trust in Hollywood have an effing OUNCE of creativity????!! Point Break is by far one of my favorite movies of all time and put Bigelow on my personal map (WELL before Hurt Locker). All you Keanu haters can suck it b/c this was one movie at least that he PERFECTLY suited. The beauty of the shots, Swayze, LeGros–all of it made a great film that I continue to watch over the years. (one of the best opening scenes ever-the waves and score). Anyway.
My point is: LEAVE the movies done before you fucking alone! Footloose, Dirty Dancing, Conan……… They weren’t your idea, you can’t make them “better” so stop trying already.
Even if it’s not the best movie ever (which Point Break most definitely is
As long as they get whoever they cast as Johnny Utah to say “I…AM… AN…. F… B…. I… AGENT!”
“Utah! Get me two!”
Life sure has a sick sense of humor, doesn’t it?
