EXCLUSIVE: Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have sold their first project this season, a female-centered, character-driven drama, which has landed at CBS with a script commitment plus penalty. Written by Anna Fricke, the untitled project is based on Robyn O’Brien, an author, researcher and mother of four who has become an unlikely advocate for cleaning up the food supply. It centers on a congresswoman, wife and mother who fights for the underdog. 20th Century Fox TV and Kurtzman and Orci’s studio-based K/O Paper Products are producing, with Fricke, Kurtzman and Orci executive producing. K/O president Heather Kadin also is expected to exec produce, with O’Brien on board as consultant. Along with her husband, fellow TV writer Jeremy Carver, UTA-repped Fricke developed Syfy’s adaptation of Being Human. The two are executive producing and running the series, which has been renewed for a second season. This is the second development season for K/O. Last year, they sold 2 projects that went to pilot at Fox, Locke & Key and Exit Strategy starring Ethan Hawke. Neither made the cut to series, though there is still a slim chance that Locke & Key might be resurrected, with MTV recently expressing some interest. Kurtzman and Orci are a little late to the TV pitch season this year because of feature commitments. Kurtzman just completed his feature directorial debut, Welcome to People, which he and Orci co-wrote, and the two are also working with J.J. Abrams on the Star Trek sequel.

I love the ” underdogs “….the more people reject them, the more I love them and protect them more! The show should send a message of encouraging fighting for love and not fighting against hate….open up to love and let the sunlight in….no one should ever wish anyone harm, even if they’re not nice or evil….GOD takes care of it, it’s not up to people to collect debt from others….open up to love and let the sunlight in, choose love I’m the face of hatred, choose good in the face of evil, choose peace in the face of war, choose friendship in the face of enemies, choose GOD in the face of Satan! GOD bless….open up to love and let the sunlight in:)
Honestly, this sounds awful. These guys do one thing well — reboot stuff. They are good re-booters. If you examine the Orci-Kurtzman track record when it is something original like the Island, Exit Strategy or Secret Service Pilot or less known like Cowboys & Aliens it bombs or never gets on the air. When they do household-name material like Star Trek and Transformers it hits.
These guys were writers for Alias during its early, innovative seasons. They’ve done a lot of other topnotch TV work. So maybe they should be assessed based on the opinion of someone who has the slightest idea what they’re talking about.
Alias was ridiculous and awful and never innovative – just typical lazy network schlock. I’m inclined to think you either have awful tastes and don’t yourself know what you’re talking about.
Anna Fricke = awesome
congrats!!
This is one of those ideas that really can go either way. I like seeing K/O going in a different direction than normal. And Anna Fricke is a pretty fantastic writer. She and Jeremey really did an amazing job adapting Being Human. If Anna is on, she might nail this out of the park.
Make the hero a woman starting a grass roots effort and not a paid politician (like they all are) and this might work. Reality is… not one elected official in DC has ever lifted one finger to stop Monsanto from doing what they are doing. In fact, most in DC are paid to protect Monsanto and if they don’t they lose their job so to try and convince viewers someone in DC is gonna step up and fight the all powerful Monsanto is well… probably more of a comedy than a drama. Make her a really fat pissed off mom unable to understand why she looks like a blowfish when she discovers the gmo high fructose corn syrup in her cheerios is the poison and you just might have something. don’t turn your back on monsanto. they file lawsuits for fun. fair warning and good luck.
Actually Ron Paul has been against GMO for quite some time. I believe there are a few other senators and Congressman that have resisted Monsanto as well.
There’s a trend in TV of politician procedurals:
ex President, ex Supreme Court justices and now a Congresswoman all “fighting for the little guy”.
The West wing worked because it was about politicians and politics.
These Law & Order type drama copycats trying to make us think politicians care about citizens outside of office are true “fiction” but not compelling TV like West Wing was.
Orci/Kurtzman …. bah ! Track record of really bad movies.
Those two always seem to wear expressions that look like South Park characters.
This sounds awesome. Right in their wheelhouse! Go K/ O and HK and all the lovely people there. Love that Michelle Lee!!!
I worked with Anna Fricke on USA’s “Touching Evil” and she’s one of the best writers in town. If they accepted scripts she’d win “The Voice,” swear to it, Cee Lo, I ain’t lyin’. Get after it, Fricks.

Anna Fricke is awesome and talented. Go Fricke!
