‘New Girl’ Opens Big, Tops Night
For the first time in a decade, Fox can say that it has a live-action half-hour comedy hit on its hands with New Girl, which blew past all ratings projections to open with a big 4.8/12 in adults 18-49 (10.3 million viewers overall). New Girl‘s performance caught everyone by surprise, including Fox’s head of marketing Joe Earley. While he is elated today, just a couple of days ago he was worried as the network’s risky promo stunt of putting the New Girl pilot on iTunes, VOD, airplanes and Hulu and in hotels for two weeks ahead of the premiere had started to get out of hand. Fox had made the deal to raise awareness for the series starring Zooey Deschanel, as the show’s intent-to-view levels had been consistently high but its awareness numbers were lagging. In exchange for getting the pilot for free streaming, distributors committed to promote the show across their platforms, including a prominent placement on the homepage of iTunes, which was taking a pre-premiere window on a show for the first time. After the first week, things looked good — awareness for New Girl was up by 6%, something Earley said could not have been achieved by the network’s standard marketing campaign alone. (Free press for the sneak peek experiment might have helped, too.) After awareness went up, the buzz metrics also started jumping, and chatter on the show increased 400%. “People were talking peer-to-peer, and it was overwhelmingly positive,” Earley said. “So we figured any viewing lost (by the promotional streaming) would be replaced by people who didn’t intend to watch.”
But then an alarming trend developed. “The numbers started climbing and climbing at a much higher rate,” Earley said. “When we hit a million views, I started to become nervous; when we hit 2 million, I started to break out in a cold sweat. Over 2 million viewers had consumed this show before it even premiered!” Fox couldn’t stop the promotion as they had a commitment to their distribution partners but began thinking of ways to slow down the rate of consumption of the pilot, like pulling back on promotion. “But there was no slowing it down, people were enjoying it,” Earley said, noting that the vast majority of viewers watched the whole pilot, something rarely seen in free previews of new series. What’s more, the promotional streaming window didn’t end until the day before the New Girl premiere, further chipping away at potential repeat viewing. So Earley and the rest of the Fox brass came to accept the fact that the promo streaming stint would probably depress viewership for the opener but hopefully boost the series’ long-term prospects by prompting many people who sampled the show to put it on their DVR season pass. With the massive pre-premiere viewing and Fox’s (not-so-good) track record of launching live-action comedies, the network was prepared for a premiere 18-49 rating in the high 2s and hoping for one in the neighborhood of last fall’s Raising Hope, which launched to a 3.1, followed by a slow build. The absolute best-case scenario was if New Girl held on to its Glee lead-in. Instead, the rookie’s demo rating shot up by 20% from Glee. How did that happen?
1. The show was good, so word-of-mouth and critical response was great. But the same was true for ABC’s Modern Family two years ago, and New Girl eclipsed even that premiere by 12%. What New Girl had extra was ..
2. A big, likable star. Fox made Deschanel the center of its promotional push, which ranged from traditional billboards and Web banners to talking video ads in shopping malls to Deschanel filming special promos to air during syndicated comedies on Fox stations. Additionally, Fox tapped in to Deschanel’s large fan base and Internet following, including promoting the show on her popular blog, HelloGiggles. Earley believes that the ratings spike from Glee to New Girl can be explained with Deschanel “bringing in new people” to the network who don’t necessarily watch TV or Fox. Additionally, New Girl had …
3. Great repeatability, something that helped offset some of the pre-premiere online viewing as some of the people who had already seen the pilot watched it again last night.
All in all, we will probably never know what exactly led to New Girl’s extraordinary opening number. It was “some good alchemy happening,” Earley called it, noting that, while the free downloading experiment ultimately worked, he would do it differently next time, starting the promotional window a week earlier and ending it a week before the series premiere. Still, was there a magic bullet? “Yes,” Earley said. “It was Zooey Deschanel.”

pretty funny show..hope it can sustain that…dont like the idea of Damon Wayans jr has to leave the show because of the awful Happy Endings which isnt going to last
FOX is notorious for canceling shows after only 2 or 3 weeks, so let’s hope the momentum continues in the long run.
I downloaded New Girl from iTunes and loved it. The performances were funny and different from other TV characters. (It’s always a plus when you give an audience something they haven’t seen before.) And the writing was sharp and witty, not the insult humor that typifies so many so-called comedy shows these days. I TiVo’d the pilot and gave New Girl a Season Pass. I just hope future episodes can live up to the pilot’s high standard.
The writing is anything but sharp and witty. Don’t lie.
Come on … her sort-of-strip tease in front of her boyfriend was funny. And then when she saw the other girl and the big red bow dropped to the floor from between her legs; that was slightly dirty and very unexpected.
I totally agree with Tommy G. I loved the sort-of-strip tease! lol Especially when she knocked the plant over and said she’d clean it up later. Zooey is adorable and fun to watch. I wish the show all the best.
I’m tired of sharp and witty, how about warm and funny for a change.
I was aware of this show from walking past billboards every day traveling to work, and I wanted to punch it in the face over and over again for “adorkable.” I hope so much this atrocity fails.
How’s the gig at NBC going?
Think you’re right Andrew, HJ must have a lot riding in “Whitney”.
Totally agreed – most annoying character on TV – whiney and horrible acting – I liked Zooey in other things but NOT this vapid character.
It opened well, but was a weak and incredibly uneven pilot. Great awareness plus the likability of Zooey prompted me to tune in. Truth be told, she was a bit over the top, Marlon Wayans Jr. was awful and Max Greenfield wasn’t much better. Jake was fine and should get better as I suspect will Zooey once they change directors. They better improve over the next 2 episodes or I’m gone.
It is rare for me to disagree with every word of someone’s post, but you made that happen!
It’s Damon Wayans Jr, genius.
Zooey is amazing. The last time I remember enjoying a pilot episode this much was Modern Family.
I watched the pilot on a flight to Houston and I must say it was the perfect place to put a new show, as I hardly try new tv series cause they mostly suck. Good show – added it to my Tivo…
When I heard Fox was letting people download this pilot on iTunes, I thought they were batsh-t crazy. But after seeing the rating stories today, I have to admit that it was actually pretty genius. Now if only they could stop using the word “adork-able”…
Terrible show. Zooey is talentless. She just has connections with the industry, that’s how she gets gigs. I don’t think this will last long. I couldn’t finish the episode.
I didn’t notice the marketing. I tuned into Fox at 9:01 for one reason only. Zooey. Glad I did. Stayed around for Raising Hope. Finally a fresh Fox comedy hour. Sorry Glee.
Oh Roger c, I’m sure zooey is devastated. I bet she’s crying on a bag of money right now wailing ” why didn’t Roger c finish watching my show?”
I watched the pre-air of the pilot. Didn’t like it. Did not watch in on the tv. It was trying way too hard. Let’s see how it does in a few weeks. Pilots always have more ratings than the following episodes.
I can watch Zooey make eyes with the sound off and be entertained which is probably why I found this pilot decent. I like the concept, but it needs more edge if I’m going to stick with it. It jumped between surreal and mushy before finally settling on something meant to be poignant if not for the over the top characters played by Greenfield and Wayans.
Okay, kids. The word “amazing” has jumped the shark.
What’s the new word, Anonymous? Tell me! I’m dying to use it!
Zooey Deschanel annoys the crap out of me. She ought to get a job at a laxative company.
Wasn’t completely certain I’d like the show even though I’ve enjoyed Deshanel in the past, but the pilot had me laughing a lot. Thought everyone was strong, and the two things that had me losing it are “Tiger Boobs” and Wayan’s Coach yelling “STOP IT!” Looking forward to the next episode, as well as the “Bones” crossover.
love zooey, but the trailer was so annoying that I didn’t even bother watching.
Must target a much much younger crowd.
Love Earley’s Hollywood logic that because the free-streaming experiment worked so well… they’ll do it differently next time. Classic.
Wow! Did FOX do that photo of Zooey in the ad accompanying this article? She’s been PhotoShopped so much – especially her eyes – the photo doesn’t even closely resemble her.
I really do think it comes down to the material and (most cases) the star. In this case they had both. If people didn’t like what they saw on iTunes – they wouldn’t have tuned in again. That research will be interesting to see actual numbers on actual repeat viewers. I’d be in restaurants and I would HEAR people talking about this show. I never thought I’d say this but – putting pilots up for free ahead of launch may become a new trend to stay. Though, I don’t know how it can be done for each and every show. I always take my own poll and ask people around me – two kids had already seen it on iTunes. Both girls, they liked it. They also wondered….. what channel is would be on. I checked iTunes and noticed the Fox logo wasn’t largely displayed. Obviously – people found it. I’m not sure about the two girls I talked to.
Zooey isn’t as much a star as a talented actress given a fun character. The pilot was uneven but there is clear potential. The numbers were huge because it’s a great fit for the GLEE crowd and was well promoted via digital distribution and social platforms. This is the future – but it wouldn’t have worked for TERRA NOVA, a blockbuster drama. But for comedies? Excellent execution.
Is there a place for pilots in this world? People could vote on airplanes, via Hulu and iTunes… If a million people spend dollars halfway between an episode and a film on unaired cult pilots, it will recoup production costs. If two million watch on multiple platforms, there’s a large enough audience to launch in series.
Congratulations to NEW GIRL. Well deserved. Now they have to earn it again next week. But perhaps Hollywood has finally found how to use the internet to promote, distribute and increase viewership on the primary platform.
Oh brother. Bottom line, all that matters is if it’s a good show. If you build it, they will come. The dog and pony social media and marketing stuff is useless if the show’s not good, and unnecessary if the show is good.
Zooey Deschanel is voluptuous, gorgeous, sexy and beautiful. I love her. She’s amazing. That woman is incredible. She’s a very talented actress. It’s an exquisite performance by her, just wonderful.
The pilot had a very high cringe factor for me, despite a few decent laughs. But after having watched the Whitney pilot, I figure it could have been worse (the Whitney pilot may be the worst episode of anything I’ve ever watched).
My biggest peeve was the Barney Stinson wanna-be douche bag character. You can portray a dbag and still be hilarious and likable, like Barney, Jeff Winger or even Charlie on 2.5 men. The New Girl dbag was over the top unbearable, insufferable. Really, a tea bag joke where you set it up yourself? That’s the 2nd biggest problem — the jokes were very predictable and contrived (e.g. Having a “dbag” jar and then overtly acting like a dbag; or the guy claiming he didn’t get dumped and then cuing the classic single cam cutaway/flashback of the guy plugging his ears while his gf dumps him).
NEW GIRL premier was awful: deriative premise and plot, funny-free script, and the girl’s “singing” affectation is fey and extremely annoying. Zooey Deschanel actually has a pleasant singing voice though not much vocal range; her music CDs are charming and quite listenable. But her character’s singing stress reliever is just a little too precious at best, and becomes increasingly irritating upon repetition. NEW GIRL’s creative team should reinvent the show. Think COP ROCK, folks, learn from that disaster and GLEE’s declining ratings, then come up with something else. NEW GIRL as presented in the premier is dreadful.
Hannah Simone, the sexy and gorgeous actress who plays a model and the new girl’s best friend, is bursting with talent and personality. She commands the screen, dominates every scene she’s in without trying, and should be starring in her own television series while deciding which movie offers to accept.
Zooey Deschanel’s “quirky” is becoming as formulaic and tiresome as Betty White’s “bawdy” and Michele Bachmann’s “crazy” so NEW GIRL may secure a niche audience of morose manic depressives, but include me out.
2 BROKE GIRLS is this season’s break out comedy hit show.
I will give it a few episodes. It was head and shoulders better than that drivel on CBS, 2 Broke Girls. Love Kat, hated the show…
