Forget Glenn Beck’s right-wing politics and conspiracy theories for a moment if you can: The launch today of his daily show on his new GBTV Web platform (at 5 PM ET/2 PM PT) makes this “a watershed day for the media/television industry,” BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield says. Media execs, he adds, “should be very afraid” because Beck may demonstrate how content creators can “build their brands outside the traditional content gatekeeper system with greater creative freedom and the potential for generating far more wealth over time.” Beck’s followers are giving him a strong start. The Wall Street Journal says that 230,000 people have already subscribed to GBTV — potentially giving it a bigger audience than Oprah Winfrey’s cable network OWN, which averages 156,000 viewers. GBTV costs $4.95 a month just for Beck’s two-hour daily show and $9.95 for Beck plus other programming. That suggests the former Fox News star will generate at least $13.7M a year from subscribers — and probably a lot more: At least 80,000 people already pay $9.95 a month for his “Insider” service that includes Beck’s daily radio show. All told, Greenfield figures subscribers will pay $27M a year for GBTV. And that’s before the enterprise lines up advertising. If the numbers pan out, then media execs won’t be the only people who’ll be afraid of GBTV.

IM NOT SURPRISED,THESE ARE THE SAME IDIOTS WHO WOULD VOTE FOR RICK PERRY.
YOU MEAN AS OPPOSED TO THE IDIOTS WHO VOTED FOR OBAMA?
And the really idiotic ones who will vote for him again.
YES, THOSE ARE DIFFERENT IDIOTS.
You’re all idiots. This isn’t Fox Nation. Take your bullshit elsewhere.
Same idiots who would vote for Rick Perry? Seriously? Grow up – what’s with the 2nd grader comments all the time on these websites? Is anyone capable of having an actual intellectual thought anymore or are you all just a bunch of parrots copying Chris Matthews and Bill Maher?
Just because someone doesn’t agree with your opinion doesn’t make them an idiot. And what’s important to some people is not important to others. Thought you godless liberals would appreciate the diversity…. Oh….. not when it comes to someone being different from you….
Intellectually dishonest? I think so….
Try turning off the tv and reading an opinion other than the one you already have. At least conservatives understand your side of the argument. We just don’t agree with it.
“And in knowing that you know nothing, that makes you the smartest of all” – Socrates
“You Godless liberals…” What was that you were saying about second grade comments?
And FYI, quoting Socrates doesn’t make you or your comment intelligent.
In the future, you may want to reconsider requesting “intellectual thought” in one paragraph then calling people “godless liberals” in the next. Just sayin’…
More to the point of the post, I agree that it’s important that Beck’s web platform has attracted so many willing to pay for it. This bodes well for those of us who want to bypass the gatekeepers to get our work out to the world.
ok. you admonish someone who made a careless, stupid comment for being a parrot copying chris matthews or whoever, i dont give a shit about inflammatory political commentators and basically slam the person for making a thoughtless comment lumping rick perry supporters all as idiots.
then not five lines later you call all liberals GODLESS. i mean…I…are you RETARDED? what’s your story? do you say stupid shit just to get a reaction from smarter people than you, are you what nerds call a “troll”?? are you even a person? it’s shocking and scary to think that you could be obtuse and contradictory to get such an extreme reaction from someone like you have from me. i’m not some faggy liberal, and i sure as shit ain’t some bigoted conservative. i like to make my mind up on an issue WITHOUT wearing blue or red until ive seen the goddamn issue.
by the way, it’s really cute how you quote socrates, like a person might do… an intelligent person, as your luck might have it. like a cat miming to play the piano. an animal trying to be human. its adorable, really. you should film yourself talk like you did there and put it on youtube, it’d get more views than all the dog videos combined!!
P.S. if your statement of conservatives knowing other peoples’ point of views and just “not agreeing with [them]“, your crap-tastic american political and social landscape would be just fine. but no, you guys gotta bring the worst in me with your close minded bullshit.
yours, a “godless”, “progressive” heathen
Republicans in Hollywood– don’t ask, don’t tell. I hope it stays that way
It’s too bad it’s beck making the push, but cable and its monopoly have been ripe for the fall for some time.
History demonstrates that it sometimes takes an audience with compulsive psychological issues to push adoption of emerging media technologies and/ or business models. Think porn.
Don’t worry, they’ll throttle.
Isn’t this what everyone said about Charlie Sheen’s web show too? It started strong, but the bandwidth and accessibility for the average viewer doesn’t support high viewership in the long run. Not yet. But, if anyone can show what the future is for broadcast, with legions of rabid fans, it’s probably someone like Beck. Or, Beck a few years ago.
Let me get this straight…you make an assertion about someone, back it up with objective facts and audio & video of the person admitting the truth of the facts… and THAT makes you a conspiracy theorist? And you wonder why Beck has such a huge audience. Oh, that’s right. … we’re all mindless zombies.
Hope this doesn’t bore you but – being as it is a comment from the right – I doubt if you’ll post it anyway. When Beck is providing his own opinion as a theory, he says so. When he offers facts, he backs them up with video, audio, &/or printed quotes of the people in question. I guess if that makes one a ‘conspiracy theorist’, I’d be happy to one.
GBTV.com is being provided FREE for the first two weeks. I challenge you to post this and let your readers find out for themselves what Beck has to say … unless you’re afraid they’re incapable of seeing past the ‘Beck Smoke Screen’.
He’s a documented liar and peddles hysteria.
Take it somewhere else, tin foil hat guy.
what’s wrong with hysteria?
It’s just as simple as that. Either you get it or you don’t.
I challenge you to watch any of Jon Stewarts fact-checking on Glenn Beck and then come back and try and support your position.
My concern is that some of Beck’s fact-checking removes quotes from their full context. Example: Shirley Sharrod’s “anti-white” speech. If you watch the ENTIRE speech, she explains how God changed her heart and her actions after she initially acted preferentially.
Yes, context matters.
I love this. go glenn go
What’s most interesting is that GBTV already has more paying subscribers than OWN had viewers last June!!
But this isn’t about new media. It’s about a person who has a sharp POV and is smart about how to sell it.
Oprah doesn’t get it. She had one very successful long-running talk show and now thinks somehow just her name alone means something to mass audiences. It doesn’t.
It would be like GBTV calling itself GBTV and then having a bunch of bad reality shows that are already on in many other places.
You may be right. Beck worked hard at ‘branding’ himself. He did his radio and tv shows, he wrote books, he did live shows and rallies and published a magazine. He built a solid media base instead of just trading on the popularity of his tv show (which is what Oprah did). The big problem is that the Beck of his early tv days on CNN and Fox changed his tune in the last year – he became more one-note, which was Oprahs problem and that made him more ‘preachy’ and narrowed his output (also Oprahs problem). And in time Beck will learn what Air America, the networks and a lot of tv shows learn – that its one thing to attract people and another thing to hold on to them.
As far as a new media strategy it is what is going on in publishing. E readers have taken over such a huge chunk of the market that many authors are going straight to e and bypassing the agents and publishers.
GBTV….hmmm…. Gay and Bi-Gender Television?
Maybe instead of being worried, they will take the time to understand WHY it might work.
I don’t know what the big fuss is over Glen Beck. He has a lot of fans, let him make his money. He’s not converting anyone, just preaching to the choir.
Why this is NOT the watershed moment BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield claims.
Greenfield claims content creators can “build their brands outside the traditional content gatekeeper system”.
Except Beck did not do ANY of that.
He is a preexisting brand name.
Beck made it big on “gatekeeper” radio and TV and like other brands he is extending to the digital realm like Disney or the NFL would.
The only difference now is Beck is betting it all on digital instead of retaining the vital TV platform.
But it is a far cry from the claims of the “industry analyst” who seemingly doesn’t really understand the industry he covers.
Hilarious. So when Glenn spent a whole show on how Obama got $500b in taxpayer funding for Americorp, his own “brownshirts” he would allude to, that was fact? What was that you said about mindless zombies?
Awesome, you are insinuating that other tax-paying Americans who are concerned about the Federal budget, and indeed, their own liberty, are “brownshirts.”
The great thing about digital media is that it is starting to break down slanderous lies and liars like you.
The only reason for concern is that he’s a right wing loon that gets other right wing loons all riled up. What this country does not need, is a bunch of gun toting-right wing-riled up loons! The fact that so many folks are buying his WWF style commentaries is as scary to me as MSNBC selling Al Sharpton’s equally dopey shenanigans.
Soak ‘em good, Glenn. You’re at least as good as any televangelist who took a widow’s mite.
Americans bought Pet Rocks, so no surprise here.
Mmmm. We at the U.S. government’s “Subversives Tracking, Enforcement, Analysis & Liquidation” office will very much appreciate these people adding their names, addresses and financial information to a list of subscribers, material we can so easily access in the endless search for True Patriots who must first be neutralized before the coalition between the New Black Panther Party, the World Communist Party, the International Atheists Organization and the LGBT Rainbow Association can move forward on long-planned final maneuvers to complete the mission of taking over the whole of the United States.
All Hollywood supporters and media powers-that-be are reminded via this dispatch NOT to forget to get your gold BACK into the market. The Patriot Insurgents have not yet realized the truth, that buying and owning gold triggers the process to make them gay, and we need YOUR help to make sure there is much gold available in the marketplace as possible. Before the fools know it, they will ALL be renouncing Jesus and watching “Glee” and “Sponge Bob Squarepants.”
Go, Glenn Beck! Go!
The funny thing is Glenn Beck will also beat out a lot of the shows that air on MSNBC. Quite sad when you think about it.
What a lot of money, just to rant…
Apples v. Oranges. Comparing OWN’s average audience to the number of subscribers to GBTV is meaningless.
OWN’s total unduplicated audience is certainly many times higher than its average audience. Even total unduplicated audience wouldn’t be an accurate comparison.
The only thing that would seem directly comparable is subscriber numbers for premium cable channels like HBO or Showtime, etc.
To all of you on the left….Cant you see what is right in front of your face!!! This is a conservative movement that is not going away. Libral Progressives have brought this country to the brink of complete distruction like a cancer. Why do you think people like Beck, Perry, Limbaugh, O’Reilly and any other conservative willing to speak their mind and the truth, are so popular? It’s Because the conservative Americans are fed up and they outnumber the progressives. Thats why the number of followers of conservative media personalties and political leaders now outnumber librals. And that larger population of past silent conservatives are now standing to be counted like never before. I say again…this is a conservative movement growing stronger by the month so get use to it, because there will be “Change” in 2012 and there is nothing you can do about it!!
You know what also doesn’t go away? Herpes.
You nailed it. So much so that no one really tried to counter with a comment. I appreciated seeing it put so plainly in print. Thanks!
Holy. Shit. (Literally)
Yes, it’s mostly mindless people (some, well-meaning) who pay attention to him. He knows this and he profits greatly from them. He’s just another P.T. Barnum with a different hat.
I think Beck is ten kinds of crazy, but I wish him well. I’d love to see a major paradigm shift in the broadcast industry, no matter where it comes from. Anything that gets the ball rolling to a world where creatives can more easily self promote and self broadcast without the clueless D-Girls at the studios getting in the way of talent and good stories, has got to be a win for everybody.
Oh, my! The Liberal mindset just doesn’t get it. The American people are hungry for the truth and we just don’t hear that from the main stream media anymore. That’s how this President got elected. He was not vetted by the media. A lot of people were fooled..but it won’t ever happen again. Remember Pelosi’s great tag: “Well, you just have to pass it to see what’s in it.” Truly, is this the way our government should work? Trust them to know what is best for us? I don’t think so.
Washington works for us and the sooner they realize that fact, the better America will be.
Thank you, Mr. Beck for letting us decide who is lying.
I keep hearing this “ MSM won’t cover blah blah”, but when FOX news is the #1 new network hands down and Rush has the #1 radio program then isn’t the conservative POV or “truth” sufficiently covered for all Americans to hear and adhere to?
And how did George Bush get nominated if we had the same MSM then too?
And this is an example of why people in LA don’t talk politics….
All of you are guilty of extreme views. comprimise is what the country is missing… and what made it great in the first place. personal liberty (the right to our own opinion and harmless actions) and comprimise.
you should be ashamed that teenagers across the middle east are dying for the right to democracy and yet you push for divisive and extremist politics.
What’s great about this country, is the right to free speech and free market. Unfortunately, this is what one can get from time to time. What gets me is the out and out clowns that emerge from this cocktail in this day and age. There’s nothing wrong with differing views, but Beck or Palin? Even dumb hillbillies should see through that poorly executed, over the top crap.
I don’t think Beck’s audience will flock to the internet. Older conservatives in flyover country seem the least likely to utilize their computers to watch a two hour TV show.
