Telepictures’ new syndicated talk show Anderson had a rough start yesterday, drawing a 1.1 household rating, 0.6 in women 25-54. However, the talker starring Anderson Cooper faced CBS Sports’ coverage of the U.S. Open men’s tennis final in several major markets, including New York, San Francisco, and Boston. Facing massive pre-emptions on the CBS stations for tennis coverage, veteran talk show Dr. Phil moved its season premiere featuring Casey Anthony’s parents from yesterday to today.
Live With Regis & Kelly and Ellen led the talk-show ratings yesterday with Regis & Kelly (2.9 HH, 1.4 W25-54) topping the chart in households and Ellen (2.6 HH, 1.5 W25-54) in the female demo. Ellen averaged a 4.1/11 HH rating/share in the eight markets where it replaced Oprah, holding onto the Oprah time-period share. Dr. Oz, which succeeded Oprah in most markets, 80+, was up double digits from last fall’s premiere. In the top market where it replaced Oprah, LA, the show drew a 4.1 HH rating, 1.3 in W25-54. Here are the syndicated talk show ratings for yesterday:
| Program | Homes | W25-54 |
| ELLEN | 2.6 | 1.5 |
| Regis and Kelly | 2.9 | 1.4 |
| Dr. Oz | 2.0 | 1.0 |
| Maury | 1.3 | 0.8 |
| The Talk | 1.9 | 0.8 |
| Dr. Phil | 1.8 | 0.7 |
| ANDERSON | 1.1 | 0.6 |
| Steve Wilkos | 1.0 | 0.6 |
| Doctors | 1.2 | 0.6 |
| Wendy Williams | 0.8 | 0.6 |
| Jerry Springer | 1.0 | 0.5 |
| Nate Berkus | 1.0 | 0.5 |
| Steven and Chris | 0.0 | 0.0 |

Any excuse to explain away AC’s lousy ratings. His ratings on CNN are no better. In fact, nothing on CNN gets decent ratings. Yet the media keeps shoving AC (and certain others) down everyone’s throats as if he’s somehow relevant. He’s not. Just a poor little rich boy who refuses to come out of the closet because “that’s personal” yet never an interview goes by when he doesn’t bring up his brother jumping to his death. I guess suicidal brothers aren’t personal. Huh.
that’s a little rough with a touch of gay bashing as well, very nice person you are.
not gay bashing at all. there are a lot of gay people out there like myself that would prefer more visibility and less of folks staying in the “glass closet” just because they think it’s good for their careers.
Tennis, schmennis, nobody watched this guy on CNN and nobody’s gonna watch this either. Watch for the “unexpected” no bump, after the Open’s over.
Someone’s sex life is personal. He ain’t fucking you so you should care what his sexuality is. I don’t understand people who think that someone else bedroom activity is there business. Either your jealous and wish you were the one he was sleeping with or hater against gay people.
Anderson and Telepcitures will need to really push and promote the talker to get to the Dr. Phil numbers. He is likeable and savy, perhaps to high brow for the daytime talk period. Nice to see that the marketplace is willing to accept a new payer to that sandbox. The real test will be how well Anderson can fare in the pre-empted markets of yesterday and of course survive the halo effect of a new series. Hope he can succeed.
I love how people like you dismiss the public as being ignorant because they chose to not watch and obsess over what you do. Is that a face-saving tactic when the ratings are low or the box office is weak? Seems so. Keep telling yourself that your product is “too high brow for all the stupid Americans out there” rather than admit that the product you’re shilling is of no interest to anyone but yourself, navel gazer. People like you are more annoying than Veronica Mars fans who still keep going on about what an alleged travesty it is that a show nobody watched got cancelled almost a decade ago.
Hey Dorothy Palmer, loose your anger and chill. Anderson may just not fit in these time periods in syndication which is a different programming platform than cable such as CNN. If you are going to quote then be accurate. I take any viewerhip as important, and viewers are certainly not ignorant. You on the other hand…
Snooze fest. Cooper is not that likable, and this has failure written all over it.
Loving the show so far. I’m sure the show will gain some traction over the next few months.
Thanks so much for posting the daytime talker numbers, Nellie!
So this means that Anderson would have had a
1.4 rating if he were not pre-empted by Tennis in the Top 10 markets.
And if not pre-empted he would have had an 0.8 in desireable 25-54 year old females.
Go Anderson!
Honest question for those who know: has Anderson Cooper ever had strong ratings? My impression is that he simply failed upward at CNN, under some pretty catastrophic network leadership.
He’s beloved in the blogosphere, but bloggers alone aren’t going to keep a daytime talk show afloat.
It’s slow because he’s DREADFULLY BORING and drab. Did you see his coverage from Egypt? Was he not embarassed? Why is it the male reporters from the BBC didn’t need to hide in a bunker, but he did? He’s rides on nepotism, I don’t doubt he’s very bright, but really, so boring and uninteresting and he’s confused his audience by becoming “tabloidy” and selling out. This is not a real reporter.
so why are they getting rid of regis? he seems to do pretty good
Yea, blame tennis.
There is no one on earth ACoop could have had on his show yesterday that would have made for better television than the tennis match. A truly spectacular game!
So, the “Anderson” era will pretty much fall in somewhere between “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show”.
Despite Hollywood’s best efforts, much of the American public never warmed to Anderson Cooper. I rejected him as soon as he revealed an obvious left-wing agenda.
Though he avowedly called his CNN show “non-partisan,” he used the word “tea baggers” to cast aspersions about a group of peaceful Americans exercising their rights as citizens. Though he later back-pedaled, calling his remark a “stupid, silly, one-line aside” that was not meant to “disparage legitimate protests,” the damage was done.
He was never a journalist and he’s certainly not a talk show host. Face it, if Anderson Cooper can’t be successful in the gay and liberal bastions of New York, San Francisco, and Boston, the show is doomed. He will is a failure on cable and will be a failure in syndication.
how come you have THE TALK (CBS) and not THE VIEW (ABC). I realize The View premiered a week earlier but Id like to see how they did in comparison to the other shows. Since the Talk is network, this list isn’t just syndicated shows so where does THE VIEW fit in? Has THE TALK been affected by its terrible host shuffle? I stopped watching it after seeing last week’s dismal first 2 shows and the awful chemistry between the hosts and the fact that CBS didn’t even acknowledge to the audience that 2 of its hosts were MIA
You have to watch this show or you’re racist!!! Who doesn’t want to be berated about issues over and over on televison, I ask you.
So does AC come out during November sweeps or hold it till February? I guess ratings will tell. He has a lot of potential. I find him very likable and handsome and he’s got an EP from Oprah and from GMA so he should be able to get the big ‘gets’ esp if he bundles them up with appearances on CNN as well. Telepictures knows how to produce daytime talk. But I do wonder who’s left to watch daytime TV anymore
I like Anderson Cooper. It’s hard to watch a daytime talk show when you work, you have to really want to see the topic and it’s hard to find the time to watch. So far, and it’s only been two days, it’s not been too necessary to find the time. Could get there but we’ll have to see what kinds of topics he tackles, etc. The quick succession of celebs yesterday was a bit too light for an hour. Personally, I would’ve loved it if he replaced Regis and joined Kelly. They’re great together.
His brother’s suicide is personal too but he talks about it a lot. Other newscasters and especially talkshow hosts talk about their significant others ALL THE DAMN TIME yet he doesn’t make a peep. It’s not like he is afraid of getting fired and going to the poorhouse, his family is loaded. He is just a wimp.
