EAfter a year and a half away from the spotlight, Andrea Wong is rejoining the executive ranks with top international positions at Sony Pictures Entertainment. The former CEO of Lifetime, who had been rumored for virtually every high-profile TV executive job that became available in the past 18 months, has been named President of International Production for Sony Pictures Television and President of International for SPE. She will be based in London.
In her SPT position, Wong will head the studio’s international TV production business, reporting to SPT president Steve Mosko. She will oversee SPT’s 15 owned and joint venture international production companies. Wong will shepherd the development of new formats as well as the local adaptations of SPT-owned formats, primarily on the unscripted side. The studio’s library of reality formats, which was boosted by the 2008 acquisition of Dutch company 2waytraffic, includes Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Dragon’s Den and Pyramid. Additionally, SPT has been setting up local versions of its daytime talk show Dr. Oz and some of its library sitcoms, including The Nanny, Married … With Children and Everybody Loves Raymond. It was Wong’s successful tenure as head of alternative and late-night at ABC, where she developed such hit franchises as The Bachelor, Dancing With the Stars and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, that was key in landing her the SPT job, which is skewed heavily towards reality. “Andrea’s business acumen and her role in developing successful unscripted programming like Dancing With the Stars and The Bachelor make her a perfect fit for SPT,” Mosko said.
Wong replaces Kees Abrahams, who is stepping down as president of international production for SPT. Abrahams, former CEO of 2waytraffic, had been overseeing SPT’s international production operations since 2waytraffic’s acquisition. “Kees’ entrepreneurial spirit has been instrumental to the growth of our television production business internationally and we thank him for all of his efforts,” Mosko said. Added Kees, “I think it is now time for me to pursue some new commercial opportunities, and I wish Sony well.”
As President of International for Sony Pictures Entertainment, a newly created position, Wong will serve as SPE’s liaison oversees on matters related to international production, reporting to SPE chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal. SPE currently has offices in 39 territories. Wong will be tasked with championing internationally SPE’s business and political agendas, working closely with various corporate groups such as Government Affairs based in Culver City as well as SPE’s other business units. “Andrea will be an important ambassador for Sony Pictures in the international marketplace,” Lynton said. Added Wong, “There has never been a better time to be globally focused, and I look forward to collaborating with Sony’s strong creative team to build and produce great programming worldwide.”
Wong, who serves on the board of Liberty Media Corp, segued from her highly successful turn as EVP alternative programming, specials and late-night at ABC to a rocky three-year stint as president and CEO of Lifetime Networks, which ended when the company was taken over by A&E Television Networks last year. During her tenure there, Wong oversaw the launch of Lifetime’s flagship drama series Army Wives and orchestrated the high-profile acquisition of Project Runway but wasn’t able to stem the cable network’s ratings erosion.

What a tremendous hire for Sony. Andrea is the epitome of elegance.
Fantastic news!
Has Hollywood forgotten she was the one whom passed on American Idol for ABC.
And? So what? Happens all the time. Some of the smartest and most successful execs have passed on things that went on to become monster hits elsewhere. You don’t kill someone’s career (or even judge one) based on one decision like that, especially in television.
“Has Hollywood forgotten she was the one whom passed on American Idol for ABC.”
What an ignorant statement. Back in 2009 Warren Buffett bought a huge stake in Exxon Mobil when oil was at it’s height so according to your theory he should step down from Berkshire Hathaway and stop investing? Ms. Wong is extremely smart and will do very well in her new capacity with Sony.
Good move for Sony and Andrea!
Congrats to Andrea. She is a fantastic Executive. Sony is lucky to have her. Kudos!
Wait, she passed on “American Idol” – then she knows nothing. Bad hire.
And everyone knows Buffet is way past his prime, hence the 35% drop in his stock, so yes, mr. Brownnosing secretary, Buffet and Andrea are past their prime.
Personally, I wish FOX passed on Idol as well. The show sucks. But you brownnosers suck more.
No, you don’t kill off someone for missing on one show. Now destroying a cable network is another story. Then again, by the time Nancy D is done with Lifetime, Andrea will look like a genius.
What a great move for Sony. Andrea is not only one of the smartest and most well respected execs in the biz, but also a person of great integrity. Truly one of a kind.
I was at an HRTS luncheon when she was running Lifetime and the only thing she had to contribute to the conversation was that Lifetime online was launching a digital paper dolls game. In over her head if you ask me.
Andrea has the one thing that A&E stole from Lifetime: class.
The way this press release spins the truth is shocking. Andrea single handedly destroyed Lifetime. I know because I had to work with her. She came on after Army Wives. She had nothing to do with that show. She canceled one of Lifetimes only classy shows “Side Order” (which got numbers Lifetime would pray for now) and put the network in lockdown acquiring Project Runaway. The ratings for the network then plummeted.
Andrea Wong is arrogant and imperious — signs of true insecurity in a leadership position. The bones of Lifetime fled and now it’s a white trash cable network. Andrea Wong also pushed Bill Maher off ABC besides passing on American Idol but she’s always had Bob Iger supporting her for some strange and untold reason.
Her ambition is much greater than her talent to carry it out.
I must be getting old if “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and “Pyramid” are considered to be “reality” formats, instead of game show formats (most people of my generation knew the latter as “The $25,000 Pyramid”).
Andrea is a very talented woman who has accomplished plenty even before she turned 30. Do you know that Harrison Ford was hired to do Hans Solo in Star Wars ONLY when Tom Selleck and someone else declined the role? Well did George Lucas career went KAPUT?
In Hollywood mistakes happen and that is how the TOP folks keep learning and becoming better just like any aspect of life.
They are very few women in the industry so KUDOS to Andrea. I am a photographer in LA and I know Andrea and had work with her on and off on different projects so if you dont know this talented woman pls back off your negative comments about her as a person.
