Which nitwit thought it would be a swell idea to invite Army Wives actress Kim Delaney to a ceremony this week honoring former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates at Philadelphia’s National Constitution Center? She was kicked off stage after stumbling through this highly inappropriate speech during which she confused playing an Army wife with actually being an Army wife:

Drugs do some crazy things.
She was clearly reading from a script or teleprompter…totally unprepared and embarassing.
It looks (and sounds) like she was trying to read from a teleprompter that was either too far away, or she forgot to put in her contacts. What a mess!
Supposedly there was a malfunctioning teleprompter, but I don’t really think that was the problem here.
At the very least, the teleprompter issue doesn’t explain the disheveled appearance.
She should have rehearsed or read the script before going on stage….she may have had a few too many before going on stage.
She clearly couldn’t see the teleprompter well or wit was malfunctioning and running slowly… KD is not a substance abuser any more, hasn’t been for over a decade, trust me!
Over a decade?Didn’t she check into rehab just 5 years ago?
Well it looks like she fell off the wagon for this event.
Didn’t she put on probation for drunk driving in 2002
“…wit was malfunctioning and running slowly… ” – you got that right, apologist!
Tiger Blood!
When is the Kim Delaney roast?
Oh, dear. Awkward indeed.
Kim is sick–the woman lost custody of her kids because of her alcohol problem. Whatever role she played in some tv show, she should never have been at this event–but she doesn’t deserve to be treated like Charlie Sheen either.
“…she doesn’t deserve to be treated like Charlie Sheen either.”
You mean given tons of publicity, a new high profile show, and tens of millions of dollars? Yeah…that would suck for her.
My sentiments exactly. I’ve been clean and sober for 27 years; never had a series, probably never will. Thank God my husband has a job . . . .
I feel the writer is a tad unfair. The point she was trying so valiantly to make through her state of confusion was exactly that she only had a fictional connection with the detritus of war; she does mention that she has only done the things she describes in a Kerouac-way on television. She never went to the funeral of her son’s best friend, killed in Iraq. Don’t think she’d be allowed to through the custody agreement that took her kids away in the first place.
Wow…some may blame it on a bad teleprompter, but she’s definitely on something. Her hair’s a mess, and even if she couldn’t read the teleprompter, she could speak up. And the whole little hair flip and hand toss after “but for me, it’s all make believe…”
If it were a bad teleprompter, you’d just say that. “I’m sorry – the teleprompter’s malfunctioning, but what I want to say is…” and you hit a couple of the top points you remember from your rehearsal (because you are rehearsed for these high level events) or something that’s on-topic, say thank you, and on with the next speaker…film clip…whatever.
Shes a hot mess. I dig the whole woman on a downward spiral thing.
Looks like she couldn’t read her Teleprompter, not any substance problem. Reminds me of Farrah Fawcett’s infamous performance on Letterman years ago, though.
A malfunctioning teleprompter doesnt make you look like you just woke up on the street after one hell of a night out. I’m surprised anyone let her onto the stage looking like that. She was obviously under the influence. And she wonders why she lost custody of her son. Sad. I thought she’d cleaned up.
So, big deal. At an awards show for an amoral butcher, an actress gets high and shrugs off the pompous bullshit. Detox, mama.
This was more than any teleprompter situation. Whatever the influence, she could additionally have a fear of speaking in front of large groups. It happened to me once, and while it might make for funny sitcom material, in real life, it is embarrassing and quite horrible. It can render a person nonsensical…
It’s well known that she is an alcoholic and has been for years. It’s a shame she didn’t drink AFTER the speech.
She is a RECOVERED alcoholic, she’s been sober a while now. If she was still using there is no way she could film a demanding show like Army Wives where she has 14 hour days and pulls in a great performance week after week. Acting in a one hour drama is grueling work and you have to show up clear and focused. She proves that year after year on AW.
Thank you, I agree with you she is a great actress and I enjoy her shows. So…she had a bad day. Who hasn’t??? As the saying goes “Those that live in glass houses, shouldn’t throw stones”!!!
Um, this is more than a malfunctioning teleprompter. Sad. Had to look away from this implosion.
I understand the connection. Sure she’s an just actress, but many folks can enjoy a celeb’s appearance at most events…even when it’s a bit of a stretch. This performance by KD, however, is an inexcusable embarrassment on all counts. She’s a professional and as such, should’ve and must’ve had the script long before the event. She should’ve also had script in hand. Regardless of the circumstances and given the gravity of the content of her speech, she could’ve apologized for teleprompter not working correctly. The fact that she didn’t have her act together enough to take any of the aforementioned precautions, leads me to suspect…..well, you know.
Sugar coat it all you want. Bottom line; she’s a mess. This is a ceremony honoring someone. Brush your hair & put on some makeup for Christs sake.
Wow. To me the most embarrassing moment was when they interrupted her, and yanked her off the stage. She couldn’t read the teleprompter (which might have been a good thing, since it was appalling material). If the organization didn’t have a rehearsal, where they could have evaluated her ability to read their/her text, then shame on them, not her.
For whatever reasons causing this ‘performance’…this is sad to watch for everyone.
The day before she taped an appearance on the View honoring the cast of “All My Children” and she seemed fine. Perhaps she celebrated a wee bit too much afterwards. I would think if they knew she was having problems they should not have had her go on at the National Constitution Center in the first place. Watch the View with her cast she was funny, entertaining and as I said seemed fine.
Have some compassion. She’s a nice lady struggling with a lifelong problem. They should have NEVER let her go onstage in that condition.
Sad, and must be forgiven. Not so easily forgiven: all those, in the the hours or minutes leading up to this, who knew she was in trouble, and didn’t save her from embarrassment.
it’s like that nightmare you have the night before you’re suppose to give your presentation to the class. the fear most people have about bombing in front of the class but never come true…until now.
Sure, many peoples fear is of bombing in front of a lot of people. Not showing up in front of a lot of people bombed!
We all have our good and bad days. This was just a bad day for her, and we all can’t say we haven’t had them. They happen to us all and in the end we all try to forget. It was a mistake and Im sure Kim felt bad afterward (even seeing it again online.).
I was at the event, working it for WPVI. Prompter was fine. The script WAS a bit confusing, switching from portraying a real Army wife to herself. But she stumbled right out of the gate. I don’t know her, but everyone there thought she looked really out of it. Part of the challenge with the shoot tho was TV people weren’t in charge of the event, Constitution Center people were, and they insisted she was good to go.
