EXCLUSIVE: Nicholas Sparks is making his first foray into TV writing. The bestselling novelist, whose books have spawned several hit feature films, has sold an original story idea to ABC for a drama series that will be produced by ABC Studios and Twilight producer Temple Hill. The drama, titled The Watchers, tells the story of a fallen angel looking for his mortal love. Sparks teamed for the project with Temple Hill, which previously produced the film adaptation of Sparks’ novel Dear John and is now in pre-production on another Sparks feature adaptation, that of his 2010 novel Safe Haven. Sparks and Temple Hill then took the idea to ABC Studios, where Temple Hill has an overall deal. Kristin Hahn was brought in to co-write the script with Sparks and the pitch was taken to ABC, which bought it right away. Sparks is executive producing with Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey. Theresa Park, Sparks’ longtime publishing agent and president of his production company, is producing.
“I’ve always wanted to create a smart, unconventional show about angels on Earth, and ABC is the perfect home for this kind of imaginative, character-driven drama,” said Sparks who, along with Park, is repped by UTA. This is Sparks’ first original TV project. Several years ago, CBS developed a drama based on his book The Rescue. Temple Hill is off to a strong start in television. The feature producer entered the TV arena last December when it signed a two-year deal at ABC Studios and sold its first TV project, a contemporary re-imagining of Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo, to ABC. The project, Revenge, was picked up to pilot and then series and is slated to premiere tomorrow night.

Nicholas, you are the reason my wife hates me
And this coming from a man who says he doesn’t write romance and thumbs his nose down at the genre.
He was specifically speaking about the “Romances” you would find in the romance section of a bookstore. Which is a lot like soft porn. I agree with him that he writes love stories, not those trashy “Romances”.
People must be disagreeing with him because they already don’t like him, because his argument is sound.
If you want to criticize Sparks, just tell the truth. He has a strong talent for coming up with new variations of plotlines. Which is very, very difficult to do. But his actual writing is at something like the fifth grade level.
It would be nice to get new plot twists with very strong writing, like J.R. Tolkien, but that is asking a lot. Let’s just give Sparks credit for what he is good at, and realize what he’s not so good at.
Radiate love!
So, does someone die at the end of every episode?
Not only does it seem to happen at the end of most of Sparks books, but it also seems to happen in real life. Go figure.
Stupid idea…another reason to fire paul lee
Isn’t this pretty much the same thing as city of angels, that god awful nic cage and meg ryan movie?
No. The only similarities they have is an angel on Earth
ABC, you just keep giving us reasons to not watch your network.
Question: will Nick cage be reprising his role as the angel in a trench coat?
So how is this different from Touched by an Angel and Highway to Heaven?
Why don’t you at least wait until the show airs before you complain about it? I don’t know if it will be completely like City of Angels-but I loved that movie too! Apparently some of you people haven’t even read his books. He doesn’t consider himself a person that writes ‘romance novels’ because his books aren’t ‘trashy’ like a lot of those. His characters connect on such a deeper level than just hopping into bed with each other. As for comments about death always being included. To me, that makes it more real. It happens every day. Life, Death, Happiness, Sadness..etc..that’s what makes him such a great Author. I’m really looking forward to watching this show. Does anyone know when it will begin?
