EXCLUSIVE: Hours after Deadline revealed the impending exit of New Regency chairmen Bob Harper and Hutch Parker, I’m told that former Paramount Pictures production president Brad Weston is in deep negotiations to run the production/financing company as president/CEO. That is a position similar to the one held by Sanford Panitch before he left to run Fox International Productions. The chairman post that will be vacated by Harper and Parker will be filled by majority owner Arnon Milchan, who is really planning to roll up his sleeves and become way more involved than he has been in the past few years.
Weston is an experienced production executive who, before Paramount, ran Dimension Films with Andrew Rona, (who after starting the Rogue genre label for Universal is currently running Joel Silver’s company at Warner Bros). The big question is whether Milchan will be willing to put ain the time and the daily grind that is necessary to run a major production/financing company like New Regency, where Harper and Parker oversaw everything from production to marketing, distribution and the library. Rupert Murdoch tried a hands on approach years ago after Barry Diller left, but it is a tough thing to sustain when there are other businesses to run. Of course, Milchan owns 80% of New Regency (Fox is a part owner of the company), so he has the right to run things if it pleases him.
I’m told that Milchan missed those early days, when he was in the middle of daring, filmmaker-driven fare that included pictures like the David Fincher-directed Fight Club, the Michael Mann-directed Heat, the Curtis Hanson-directed L.A. Confidential, the Sergio Leone-directed Once Upon a Time in America, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil, the original Elie Chouraqui-directed Man on Fire, Oliver Stone’s JFK and Natural Born Killers, and the Danny DeVito-directed The War of the Roses. Those kind of memorable films are harder to make now than ever, but Milchan has the resources to take those risks and he’ll spend a majority of his time in Hollywood trying to make more of those kinds of filmmaker-driven pictures, along with the commercial big swings as well.
Weston transitioned into a producing deal when he left the Paramount executive suite. He is involved in a bunch of movies, including Paramount’s upcoming Footloose remake. But he’s a well regarded executive and it would not be a surprise if his deal makes and he resurfaces in a major job like this. As for Harper and Parker, Harper told me last night that both of them will stay involved in the four films that Regency will release this fall, along with some of the fast tracked projects they put togehter, including the Darren Aronofsky-directed Biblical epic Noah at Paramount, the James Gray-directed Brad Pitt-starrer The Gray Man, and the Doug Liman-directed Luna, also being done with Paramount. Stay tuned.

The same stale, tasteless old cards just get shuffled and reshuffled in this town.
Some boring suits leave and a new one enters. Ho hum.
99% of suits will make the same safe, fear-based calls as their predecessors anyway, so nothing really changes.
Dude – you obviously have not met Weston. Say what you will about him, but the words stale, safe, boring and fear-based do not apply to Brad. He’s a unique, hard charging, crazy dressing hard ass, more like the late 80′s/early 90′s Hollywood than today’s. i agree with you that the bulk of this town is run by blandness, but don’t paint weston into that picutre – he’s anything but.
what WHS means is
wait til he gets the job…he’ll be wearing a toupee in no time
It would be a killer choice. Brad is a brilliant exec, creative, honest and passionate about actual filmmaking. Increasingly rare qualities in an exec, but the only ones that generate real, sustainable results – good news for Weston and for nr
Brad is a great guy. Super passionate, smart and an excellent executive.
Hope it’s true. If anyone can turn that place around it’s Brad.
Absolutely agree with the other two comments. Great catch for New Regency if this happens – Brad is outstanding.
There’s a winner. He got fired from Paramount for the same reason Bub & Hutch got the boot: playing it safe!
hmmm. is his mother writing these comments? much ado about nothing in the last five years.
Are you kidding? The town DESPISES Weston. He was horrible at Paramount and got shown the door and has done nothing with his producing deal. He is widely regarded as one of the worst execs around and couldn’t be a worse choice for NR. Stop planting comments, seriously.
I have never met a less creative, bigger jerk than Brad Weston. I have known him for nearly 20 years and thought the entire time that he embodies everything wrong with Hollywood. Shallow, stupid and with a huge chip on his shoulder. He has disdain for anybody creative and a hatred toward all women.
Goof luck, New Regency!
Brad can do this job in his sleep.
Here’s a crazy idea…
No offense to Brad, but how about Regency giving someone else a chance this time? Brad didn’t exactly have a great track record at Paramount and that’s why he was sent into a producer deal instead of being flat out fired. We all know those nice little deals are a part of the exit package. Take a risk, hire some new blood. People have suggested Navid. I don’t know him, but it’s not a bad idea. This is why Hollywood movies continue to suck so bad. The same tired group of execs are recycled over and over again and it’s gotten so darn boring. Let’s change it up people! Get a clue.
Dare Devil,
You do know Navid; his name is on the drivers license in your wallet.
If Weston is smart, he will bring his #2 Couper Samuelson with him. Truly one of the smartest dudes in the business.
Since NRP left the WB lot it’s been Martin Lawrence, CGI squirrels and bad rom-coms that open to $12M. Why tip over the apple cart now? High profile dramas are sooo mid 90s… own your niche!
Seriously, I can’t be the only one who wants to see a Black Knight 2, or another Just My Luck.
Personally I think they should bring back Sanford. THAT guy knew what he was doing.
Ummm, isn’t Brad Weston the guy who gave away the Twighlight franchise cause he didn’t want to renew a $100k option? With vision like that, no wonder the big media players are scrambling to put the man back in the captain’s chair.
OK, I know and have worked directly with Brad. He plays politics, has no “gut instinct”, runs scared, and manages upward well.
Those are opinions…
Here are the facts. He hasn’t had a hit in a very long time. Not sure I can name one that was his. He passed on some major franchises (who hasn’t) but primarily because he just follows “heat” or hype.
It’s not personal, but NRG can do much, much better.
good move getting rid of Hutch parker and Bob Haper – a pair of loxes. When they started over there, they bragged that their films would be filmmaker driven and no more spoofs and bad sequels. Cut to Big Momma’s House and Vampire’s suck.
How does Kara Francis keep her job is my quesiton.
Opinion, fact… who cares? It’s another example of an executive feeling he is not in first position to be serviced by his home studio and taking the first exit job he can find. Paramount brought Mary Parent into the fold and she’ll do a better job of providing the studio with material. Let’s face it, Weston butted heads with Gray and got shown the door — and he’s been sitting in that corner office ever since, tapping his fingers.
Why do you people love to hate? Brad is the best! Smart, creative and passionate about the work. He also appreciates the efforts of the team working on his films. Great hire!!!!
Impossible for everyone to love everyone in the business. But I’m a screenwriter, I’ve worked with Brad a number of times, and I love him. Couldn’t disagree more with the negativity. Love Kara too, btw.
Brad’s one of the good guys, and I’m really happy for him.
Interesting, are Weston’s development projects going to be moved to NR or are those staying where they are set at?
Wonder what happens to Craig Brewer’s MOTHERTRUCKER? It’s a great script and everyone will want to work with Brewer after FOOTLOOSE opens!
