EXCLUSIVE: Syfy’s drama Alphas is heading into Season 2 with a new showrunner. Bruce Miller has joined the series starring David Strathairn as executive producer/showrunner. He replaces Ira Steven Behr, who is departing after running the series in its first season. Alphas, from BermanBraun, Universal Cable Prods and co-creators Zak Penn and Michael Karnow, follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess extraordinary and unusual mental skills. It was renewed for a second season earlier this month. Miller will serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Penn and BermanBraun’s Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein. Karnow serves as co-executive producer. The gig extends Miller’s relationship with Syfy. He most recently served as an executive producer/showrunner on the network’s series Eureka, which wrapped production on its fifth and final season last month. ICM-repped Miller’s series credits also includes ER, Medium and 4400.

Wish it was still Ira Steven Behr…
Behr is one of the best SF-TV writers out there. Why is he leaving?
Ira “leaving” is a euphemism. Mark Stern didn’t renew his contract (that is to say: he fired him.)
Great guy. Great Writer. Alphas is very lucky to have him.
A white male writer hired to run a show. Shocker.
Wonder if any women or diversity writers-showrunners were in the running.
Actually Girlfriends already has the one…
“Girlfriends” was cancelled 3 years ago.
Shonda Rhimes is pretty much it.
Jane Espenson acts as showrunner often enough, although she is a writer. i can think of several others.
Its best they give it to the most talented people. Not base it one the X chromosome or the color of their skin. If anything, people discriminate against white men in order to look like they are PC. Oh and I am female and Asian, so don’t accuse me of being disgruntled like I know you want to. There are some very talented women writers out there, but that doesn’t mean that there should be women or black people working on every show. Just like I don’t bemoan the fact that there are shows whose whole writing staff is black.
Bruce is not only an extraordinary talent, but also that rare Hollywood commodity: an honest, decent, down-to-earth person. His success is earned.
Congratulations to Bruce! He is a terrific writer and and a great guy. Enjoyed the show before, looking forward to where he takes it in season 2.
Why isn’t Michael Karnow or Zack Penn running it?
after the lackluster pilot, penn was removed as showrunner
Bruce is fabulous – he’s an incredibly hard worker and a really great guy. Plus he knows a thing or two about a thing or two. Congrats!
Ira Behr mentioned his plans for Season 2, so Syfy obviously fired him, which means I’ll not be tuning in anymore. I only held on because I knew that, however long it takes him, Ira Steven Behr creates great drama that is used to examine the most pressing political issues of our time. On DS9, things didn’t get great consistently until Season 4; on “The 4400″, it wasn’t until Season 3 and 4. Alphas was doing some of that and maybe Karnow, Penn, and Syfy don’t like his humanization of terrorists in an effort to truthfully examine our world’s problems from a non-nationalistic point of view.
Whatever the reasons, I might check out the season premiere, but I know the show won’t have any political insight, so I barely have any reason to hold on. Who cares about another superhero show that doesn’t throw a mirror to society. Syfy screwed Behr. I won’t even buy the DVD set.
Hey, I’ve got a good idea — how about having a “great” season one or two!?!
These moves are only made when there are personality clashes or creative issues.
WAHHHHH, WAHHHHH… I need more thinly veiled political/social commentary from my weekly sci-fi serials.
If they has good DS9 and not as crap as BSG and Caprica was why not. However it seems syfy as long lost the art of balancing a good political and sci fi commitary with descent action and likable characters.
Big mistake!
If this is the same Bruce Miller that wrote for Everwood’s third season, I say congrats! He did some beautiful writing for the show, sad he didn’t stick with it in season 4…
Lol. “anybody but a white make”. Symbolism over substance.
Well, the ardent watchers around here are unanimous: Alphas _might_ have 1 more good season left. The glow is fading.
leave it to syfy to mess with a good thing
i believe their plan is to destroy every scripted drama on the channel and have only unreality tv
i hope this change at the head of Alphas won’t have an influence on Skylar, played by Summer Glau, probable return in Alphas Season 2.
WHAT? Why did they do that? It is really not going to go well.
