Rob Schneider is officially returning to primetime. CBS has handed a midseason series order to Schneider’s untitled family comedy. I hear the pickup is for eight episodes. While it was tracking well, the pilot didn’t make the cut for a fall series order at the upfronts, but CBS liked it enough to order a revamped second pilot that included major casting changes as well as several backup scripts. The multi-camera comedy, which Schneider co-wrote with Lew Morton based on the actor’s real-life experiences, stars Schneider as Rob, a confirmed bachelor who has just married into a tight-knit Mexican-American family. Spanish actress Claudia Bassols plays his wife, Maggie. Diana Maria Riva plays his mother-in-law, Rosa. Both roles were recast from the pilot, as was the role of Schneider’s father-in-law, now played by Cheech Marin. Remaining from the original cast are Schneider, Eugenio Derbez as the wife’s uncle and Lupe Ontiveros as her grandmother. Schneider and Morton are executive producing with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, while Schneider’s brother/producing partner John Schneider serves as a non-writing producer. This marks Schneider’s first TV series gig in 14 years. He last did a series in the 1996-97 season, NBC’s comedy Men Behaving Badly. Schneider has since been focused on features, often collaborating with pal Adam Sandler, most recently co-starring together in Grown Ups. With the series pickup, the Rob Schneider comedy joins cop drama The 2-2 as CBS’ backups for midseason.

who is the showrunner?
Lew Morton
Don’t know, but l love the series first chapter was very funny. So glad to see Eugenio derbez on it.
Yeah, his movies suck. But a lot of people are writing this off before it even airs. If the writing is good, this will be worth it. Besides, it’s got a helluva cast. Looking forward to seeing this. Lupe Ontiveros and Cheech Marin???? Oh yes, this has some promise.
Bomb. Only a tiny portion of the viewing public finds Rob Schneider funny or talented, and they’re not watching CBS.
Can’t see this lasting past the 8 episodes but it depends where they position the show too.
As I posted on another site, CBS keeps renewing Rules of engagement season after season, which is the worst show in the history of electricity. Rob Schneider’s show couldn’t be any worse.
I will probably be crucified for this, but I thought the pilot was funny. Rob Schneider is a great physical comedian and I’m sure with the recasting that the show will be great.
To preemptively answer you: No, I do not work on the show and no, I am not friends, college buddies or related to anyone on the show. No, I am not an executive at either the studio or the network. I am just glad to see a three camera big comedy back on TV.
You’ll be crucified for calling it a three camera big comedy. Three camera? Did you work on “Lucy?”
“Did you work on ‘Lucy?’” Funny!
By gum, Lucy was wayyyy past my time. I started out on Amos -n- Andy which was sponsored by Rinso. Damn good soap. Boy, could those guys act. Back then we called it single mic.
Damn whippersnappers.
Typical that nobody has mentioned yet that this will be the only series on network TV with a mostly Latino cast.
For now.
Put down RS as much as you want, but if the show is funny, it has a shot. A star can’t make a show a hit. But a well written show can make someone a star. Having seen the pilot, I think this show has a chance.
Really?!? How does this guy merit a show?
Why not just put Rob Schneider and Jim Belushi together on one new show that no one will watch? That’ll free up at least one timeslot for more quality endeavors.
“in the movies, collaborating with pal Adam Sandler” — Are you serious? If “collaborating” with Adam means, Adam will you please help me pay my rent this month, then, sure.
I worked with him at SNL. He was one of the most naturally funny people in the cast and there were many superstars there. Go, Rob!
Any news on the other comedy pilot by Peter Knight that CBS was considering for midseason? I saw that pilot and found it hilarious.
This is going to be good. Rob is always hilarious, but also underrated. Especially since South Park made fun of him, “Rob Schneider is a stapler”
I’ve always though Rob Schneider was a poor man’s Adam Sandler. And, of course, Adam Sandler is a non-talent so where does that leave Rob? On a CBS show. The thing you have to understand (and admire) about CBS is they have never ever cared about quality. This is their beauty. They have picked off a big ‘ol swath of American morons and made it their own. They make money not quality entertainment. That’s the secret sauce!
Are they serious? WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY THINKING?!! A SHOW ABOUT A CLOSE KNIT-MEXICAN AMERICAN FAMILY?. Yet NO REAL MEXICAN AMERICANS on the show?? With exception of Euginio Dervez (Mexican) and Lupe and Cheech who are first generation Mexican American Latinos. OK. Once again another so called “HISPANIC/Latino show” But NOT REALLY. I guarentee you it wont be on the air too long before its cancelled for the lack of Latino ratings. Sounds to me like another typical lame recipe for Hollywood to say…”See we gave Latino projects a chance and no one wants to watch them”. Ok so he marries a “SPANISH wife?!”(Claudia Bassols) NOT A MEXICAN AMERICAN?? umm different country folks! different accent! And to add: someone with minimal to no comedy background? how does that sound believable? how are WE MEXICAN AMERICANS GOING TO RELATE TO THAT? how are we going to BELIEVE THAT? “no senor”. I DONT THINK SO. We’ll go back to watching our telenovelas at UNIVISION instead. As always!. When is Hollywood going to get past the stereotypes? huh? When are they going to stop giving away our jobs to these ” so called ethnic anglo manufactured modelly type actors?” instead of, in this case, a REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN AMERICAN ACTOR. If its going to be an unknown, they should of given it to an up & coming REAL MEXICANA FROM EAST L.A. (for example) A true CHICANA from the heart. Im just sayin. And at least they could of matched up the family a little more so there is a resemblence, not even that! LOL! they do not look related at all!. All in all yes I’m afraid that CBS is mucking things up this time. “Hay Dios Mio! “QUE HORROR!!” A real good Mexican American show? add real Mexican American comedy writers to the mix and a “REAL MEXICAN American Cast” who can relate to spanglish slang, pinatas, sunday mass, carne asadas, posadas, mariachis, quincieneras, champurrado and so forth. helloo0oO!. Rob, no disrespect, I love your work and its a GREAT concept! but you got it ALLLL wrong “hermano”, sorry. Your real wife is MEXICAN. hmmm perhaps someone like her possibly?. And “porfavor”an older mother in law please!. Re: (Diana Maria Riva) I’m sure she’s great but GEE WIZ!! I’m just saying. This is coming from a 25 year old first generation Mexican American.
Your comment is racist! Talking about no real Mexicans. CBS thinks that by giving Eugenio Derbez the role of the uncle a (true Mexican)they fill their quota. There are plenty of actors and actresses that are hispanic of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th generation in the US. They don’t have to go to Mexico to hire people which is exactly what Univision does in the US. Television continues to put all the hispanics in one pile as if we just crossed the border. I’m amazed when my daughter is asked where are you from because you speak English well. Guess what she is 3rd generation american. Focus on the real lives of hispanics in the US. This show is a real flop! Take it off!
I think RS is very talented. And whoever said “How does the guy Merritt a show” must live on Mars! He’s payed his dues, a long time ago. He can be credited with the success of SNL in the 90′s not only as a Comedian, but also as a writter for the show, which help launch the cast members careers; before he even got infront of the camera.
Just saw Rob at the Improv-Pittsburgh. He was extremely funny, very smart, contemporary, and quite accomodating as he shook hands posed for pics and signed autographs. His face is so animated. He really cracked me up. Sold out crowds. Everyone left entertained. Hope his show does well. Best of luck to him.
Hahahaha this show was awsum.. i saw the filming and all i have to say is i have never laughed so much in my life XD
Wow! My mother always taught me not to judge a book by its cover. I never do but you all obviously do! Gosh give the show a chance. Do you really think Cheech would sign up for a show that would fail?
Also do you all work for ABC or NBC? Do you even watch CBS. Rules of Engagement, Mike and Molly, How I met your mother, the Big Bang theory. If you don’t think these shows are funny, the problem probably is that you do not have any sense of humor!
Rob Schneider has been quoted in my circle many many times. He is hilarious. And I hope the same people who watch the above shows will give this a chance. I doubt you all will even turn on the tv at the right time but yet continue to write your silly paragraphs on the internet.
I for one like Rob Schneider – tho a bunch of his movies were duds – but then again he didn’t write them. Hey a guy’s gotta work, doesn’t he?? I’ll watch him ANY day instead of the crappy reality shows like the Kardashians. Gawd awmighty – who cares. Yep I remember Amos & Andy, George Burns & Gracie Allen, and even Beany & Cecil.
Im only watching it for chech!!
i guess what people don’t know is the one of the best hilarious Mexican comedion is on it…… and less not for get chech…best of luck to them…. i for sure will watch…………..
From what I’ve seen of the intros/promos….I’m out!
i like the show it was so funny all my friends and family love it i come from a mexican fam and this show was the best ever we couldnt stop laughing thank you for bringing eugenio dervez we love him so much <3 we wish you the best
