EXCLUSIVE: Former Homicide executive producers Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson are back on the beat, this time at the CW. The network has bought Musketeers 3.0, a cop drama project which will be written by Fontana and executive produced by him and Levinson. It centers on three outstanding but out-of-control New York detectives who meet their match when a sexy, young rookie is assigned to their team. Levinson and Fontana’s banner The Levinson/Fontana Co. is producing with Warner Bros. TV. Rookie cops are popular on TV these days — ABC has Rookie Blue and CBS is launching The 2-2 in midseason.
Developing procedurals, which have better repeatability, has been one of the goals of new CW president Mark Pedowitz going into this season. The CW had been looking to crack the classic legal, medical and cop franchises for the past couple of years. This past season, the network greenlighted to pilot the cop drama Cooper & Stone and soapy medical drama Heart of Dixie, the latter of which was picked up to series for fall. Along with procedurlas, half-hour comedies and DC-themed comic book adaptations are among CW’s development priorities this season. The network is already working on both, buying Eric Kripke’s adaptation of the comic Deadman and redeveloping as a half-hour Todd Graff’s summer camp dramedy Acting Out. Levinson and Fontana have a history at CW’s predecessor the WB. The two produced the short-lived 2006 college drama The Bedford Diaries, which was co-created by Fontana. UTA-repped Fontana recently co-created the BBC America’s upcoming first original scripted series, drama Copper. ICM-repped Levinson, who recently directed HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack, is attached to another biopic at the pay cable network, The Day the Laughter Stopped, about silent-film star Fatty Arbuckle. John Adams writer Kirk Ellis is writing, with Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet on board to portray Arbuckle.

It is a step in the right direction but Pedowitz has a lot of work to do to get this network on solid ground once again, after Ostroff crucified the very foundation of the CW with her inept decision-making and leadership skills.
Why waste your merits on a dunk-tank like the CW?
This show will never make the airwaves but trust me, at the last minute, a twenty-something werewolf chef show will.
I agree, CW simplifies it genre shows to meet a broader audience and when the core audience transfers from UPN disappears when they stop going for diversity. Now they think they can follow the model of the other big four networks. Look how the same old tactics are working for NBC.
I’m not entirely sure I like the direction the CW is heading towards… I havn’t heard of a single project in development that sounds as interesting as “The Secret Circle” or “Hearts of Dixie”… I just don’t see a Rookie copshow working on the CW…
Haha, I think HEART OF DIXIE is going to fail. I’ve heard that the actors can’t pick an accent and stick to it. This idea sounds alright, but I’m not onboard with the title…at all.
Sexy, young, rookie Chris Santos?
Yes, Levinson and Fontana, that’s wonderful. But at this point, I don’t care if they resurrect Paddy Chayefsky to write it–please God, NOT ANOTHER COP DRAMA.
So does not fit the CW.
Rookie Blue is plenty on ABC. Stop with the same show over and over again……
….And these 2 guys, come on. Dinosaurs, sorry. Talented yes, but this is dribble.
Dinosaurs??? Yeah, Homicide and Oz were really “dinosauric” shows. Lame comment.
Yes, thank you Buckaroo.
Hey “what?” Come on, seriously, Homicide (93) and OZ (97), yes great great shows….
CW, are you for real? Lame comment?
Wrong network for these guys.
Yes, I look at those two photos and think: Now, here are some peeps who can understand the mind of a teenage girl in 2011!
Thank you buckaroo…..
Having worked with both these guys, I have no idea what they will do at The CW….
But you know what, good for them and I wish them luck.
You do know they are trying to expand beyond the teen girl demo, don’t you?
Thank you. I guess a lot of people missed that. People yell for originality, and while I know this show idea isn’t that, it is pretty original for the CW… C’mon, people.
This idea isn’t original for anyone, not even the CW. They’ve tried young hot chick cop shows before, including last season’s Cooper & Stone. And the CW’s definition of “expanding beyond the teen girl demo” means going all the way up to age 25.
So, again, Fontana and Levinson — as talented as they are — may not be the best source for this.
Exactly! Or maybe they’re thinking, “Like totally!”
Yuck, I don’t want a cop show on the CW. The CW is my favourite network because it airs shows for and about people my age. Go to CBS, that’s where cop shows belong!
No one under the age of 30 has ever honestly used the phrase “for and about people my age”. Stop pretending to be young and go flame somewhere else.
…not to mention the proper British spelling of “favourite”. For some reason, I can see Sharon Osbourne writing the above comment.
Really, ANOTHER cop show? Is this really necessary?
Cop drama fatigue, anyone?
Let’s face it: Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson are TOTAL studs. But why would they channel their estimable but limited talents on a police drama genre that is about as bullet-riddled as a scary beast straight out of a Bela Lugosi flick?
These guys are more talented than pretty much anyone the CW has ever had do anything for them but its nice to see agism is alive and well on the Fink threads.
Fontana/Levinson made this show for UPN years ago. It was called The Beat.
For God’s sake! How many projects can Levison direct at one time??? What’s next?? The phone book? He’s making a fool of himself…He needs his own quality “Boardwalk Empire” …maybe then he can get his self-respect back. He’s becoming a joke. Sad.
How come nobody including the author of this article has mentioned the inspiring source material: the three musketeers
Does anybody watch the CW? I’m mean really. These guys are at the bottom of the barrel???
Wow…
@Yepenstein’s Uncle: “Does anybody watch the CW?”
Umm…considering America’s next Top Model is into Season 15, I’d say…yeah. Shut up and go watch your Nate Berkus Show or The Biggest Loser or whatever eases your pain.
Haha… good one. Well, Give ‘em a chance haters!
I’m amazed to say this but… doesn’t this sound it’s cribbing off the plot of the upcoming asylum movie “3 Musketeers”?

I’m glad to see that the CW is trying to break out of the programming straitjacket it has been in. I envy Pedowitz his opportunity. I think it would be great fun, and a wonderful challenge, to be able to reboot their schedule.
Were I calling the shots, and could start from scratch, I would try to come up with something like this:
MONDAY: “Beyond Antares” – Star Trek: TNG spinoff, starring Tom Welling and Matt Czuchry. “Shadow On The Land” – In the near future, young rebels battle an American dictator. (Based on ’68 pilot.)
TUESDAY: “Heroes and Villains”, The colorful characters of DC Comics are brought to life by the colorful performers of the WWE. “Honey West” – Erica Durance as the curvy private eye who works the seedy side of 1957 L.A.
WEDNESDAY: “Wild Young Cowboys” – Loosely based on the John Wayne movie, orphans herd cattle for a desperate rancher. “Music City Blues” – emmy calibre drama set inside the Nashville record business.
THURSDAY: “Rory Gilmore” – The Gilmore girl takes a job as the communications director for a Colorado resort town, and has to deal with its off-beat citizenry. “Ghost” – Series version of the classic date movie, starring Neve Campbell.
FRIDAY: “Mystery Date” – game show. “I Write The Songs” – A talent competition. “Where The Action Is” – Live entertainment via satellite from venues across the country.
SATURDAY: “I Love Lucy – Classic Episodes In Color”. “Brooklyn Bridge” – encore of CBS series. “Honey West” – encore airing.
SUNDAY: “The Cosby Kids” – Cosby Show spinoff focusing on the family of daughter Sondra. “The King And Me” – A boy is coached by the ghost of Elvis. “Sammy’s Place” – Multi-ethnic revival of Cheers, starring Chris Tucker and Aisha Tyler. “Judge Jackie, . . . That’s Who!” – Spoof of tv court shows, with Phil Morris in his Seinfeld role.
I’d watch this. Would you?
no
tried WAY too hard for that one.
