The Vienna International Film Festival, aka the Viennale, scored a coup for its latest promotional festival trailer: This year’s comes from none other than David Lynch. Titled The 3 Rs, it serves as a very brief return to film while Lynch preps the release of his debut solo album. The Viennale, set for Oct. 20-Nov. 2, has a tradition of seeking out high-profile directors for these shorts, and because 2006′s Inland Empire was the last Lynch has been seen, this one’s sure to attract a lot of eyeballs.

In addition to the films and shows I’ve written and produced, I’ve also made a lot of trailers along the way. Some of them even won awards, and I sometimes enticed thousands, or millions of people, to watch films that were mediocre, I admit it. I understand that this particular festival has a history of inviting strange, obtuse film makers, like Jean-Luc Godard to make the spots for the show. But I have to ask you- does this piece really make you want to go see any movies?
yes Mr. Snob it does.
Y*E*S*
Yes. More than any other trailer I’ve seen recently. It makes me want to rewatch David Lynch films and I wish there were more directors like him
Is that you, Pete? How many rocks do you have?
Yes!!!
Wonderful weirdness from the master. Good to see the man still has it.
Even if you’re not sure what it is:)
Yep, that’s David Lynch.
Huge Lynch fan here. All I gotta say is:
WTF???
I am pleased to live in a world where David Lynch is allowed to express himself. This is absurd and frankly, barely more accomplished than an AFI thesis film. However when he cuts the head off the ducky, we are reminded that very few do creepy better than David. I was fascinated.
Apparently PCP is back and Lynch is smokin’ it!
Nobody really cares about your resume Hank. Also, I think you’re missing the point of inviting an auteur to participate this way. It gives the event certain cache and underlines the fact it’s not about star power but about movie quality. Open your mind a little. The rest of the world doesn’t follow Hollywood way of thinking.
Clearly this is ALL about the star power, and NOT the art itself. You said it yourself: “It gives the event certain cache”. That’s star-power, my friend.
This is a short any “artsy” student could make, and does make, over and over. The ONLY reason it’s shown is because it’s David Lynch, and not some “unknown” artist.
What’s it gonna take for people to admit that David Lynch is simply nuts?
Visually interesting? Sure. So is a Lady Gaga music video – and that ain’t narrative storytelling, pal.
It is obviously not trying to be narrative storytelling.
Neither has anything else he’s done lately. “Inland Empire” was completely unwatchable. Needed the volume turned off and something like Dark Side of the Moon playing.
Very nice job by Patty Hearst at the chalkboard, and I must say, her talent shows through even in that short moment of recollection and second guessing her answer. Of course, she’s been quite good in many a film.
This piece manages to showcase exactly why Lynch’s career slid off into obscurity. He isn’t that talented as a filmmaker.
I didn’t love this piece either, but — “He isn’t that talented as a filmmaker?”
Even if you ignore his more widely-acclaimed work like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, The Straight Story and Mullholland Drive — and even if you ignore the more polarizing Lost Highway and Wild at Heart (which won the Palme D’or in 1990), the 2hr pilot for Twin Peaks alone showcases more beauty than most directors squeeze out of their cameras in a career.
Fine for 1978, but feeling a little like a lazy mockery of itself at this point — or maybe a current AFI student trying to be Lynch. Does he farm these things out to interns at this point?
Am I the only one that feels like Lynch has been in on some inside joke for the last thirty years that no one else seems to get?
I love Lynch more than just about anyone, and think he’s brave and honest, but…
This is the kind of “film” that other art students would make fun of, the kind of boring, pointless meandering that makes people scratch their heads, trying to see the narrative.
If this is a trailer for a major art exhibit, then it failed; It says nothing about the exhibit, nor the nature of the exhibit. Making art is fine, but if someone gives you a very specific task, you should do it, rather than making some little art piece that perhaps should be shown AT the Viennale rather than as a trailer for it.
And it’s honestly the kind of thing that took little imagination or effort for someone like Lynch. Is David Lynch “so great” that we praise even his schlock? If I had gone out and shot this exact short, would anyone see it, care about it, or not make fun of me for making one more “art film” that makes no sense?
Is this supposed to be a comedy? Because I was laughing my ass off watching this.
The remarkable sound design is what makes it pure Lynch. That said, I laughed all the way through it too. The rubber-ducky squeaks when the hammer hits the ground were pure gold. I think this screams ‘film festival’ and Lynch was the perfect choice.
Ah how does he dare to be funny in an obscure way?!
Everyone in the film industry should follow the path of the unpredictable Clint Eastwood, George Clooney or Christopher Nolan. So that fanboys can have more material to wank off./sarcasm
acid, final cut pro, sleep deprivation.
