UPDATE, 5:25PM: Dish Network is one of three remaining bidders for streaming video website Hulu, along with Amazon and Yahoo, an insider told The Financial Times today. The bids for Hulu reportedly are in the $1.5B-$2B range.
PREVIOUS: Just as Netflix’s price increase takes effect, Dish Network is setting up a streaming movie service for Blockbuster, Bloomberg reports. The move was hinted at last week when the satellite TV provider formally asked the government for permission to offer mobile high-speed Internet service. Dish’s Blockbuster streaming also is expected to land a content deal with Starz, which ended talks with Netflix yesterday. Some analysts, though, have suggested that was a negotiating ploy by Starz and that talks could resume. Since buying Blockbuster earlier this year, Dish has promoted the rental giant by offering three months of free DVD-by-mail for new Dish customers, and committed to keeping 1,500 of its stores open. Netflix’s new pricing plans for streaming-plus-DVD sparked a customer backlash and an attempt by Blockbuster to lure away Netflix customers unhappy with the change.

Hot damn! Go, Dish!
Good for them.
I wish Blockbuster the best of luck. I love both Blockbuster AND Netflix, but it would be great to have more to choose from in the streaming department.
Blockbuster already has a streaming service and on demand online and it’s way better than Netflix. Much more selection & newer movies. I think with the combo of their stores, mailing service and online service, Blockbuster is a way better service than Netflix. We need at least one more player in this space like Hulu (maybe a Hulu/Redbox combo?) so there there is real competition in the on-demand/streaming/rental business. This would be great for content creators/owners and consumers. The technology is there, everyone wants this now, let’s get this to the consumers immediately! Should be a whole library of everything past & present at your fingertips, any way you want it – on demand, streaming, in store rental, for purchase, mail subscription – for every device: tv, ipad, computer, smart phone. Give it to me now.
Yes Blockbuster has streaming but at $3.99, $4.99 a movie. Thats not better. If I got all the movies that I get on Netflix by VOD I would be paying at least hundred dollars a month. I got the free trial from Blockbuster for the blu-ray by mail and let me tell you the turn-around is terrible. The other thing is the new releases are never available when they come out. There’s always a wait. Either “short”, “long”, or “very long” as stated on the BB website. So whats good about that. You see Blockbuster closed four stores in my area so we can’t do any in-store returns. My trial went like this: I received my first movie on a Monday in the beginning of August after I canceled the mail service with Netflix and kept the streaming service. I view it and mailed it back the next day Tuesday. It took Blockbuster a whole week to process the return and I live close to one of BB mail centers. This happened with all the free rentals that I received from Blockbuster. Also with BB there new releases are never available even after three weeks. For the last three weeks I have tryed to get The Blitz its still not available but guess what, its available on Netflix streaming service. This is a new release I could not beleive it! So,I went back to Netflix by mail service after my experince with BB. I’m happy with my decision. Untill something comes along that can replace Netflix with apples to apples I will stay loyal.
It will only work if it is all-you-can- watch, and very simple. I’ve been a Dish subscriber since they started years ago I would switch if the prices, quality, and selection were the same as Netflix.
Can’t wait til Blockbuster teaches Netflix how it’s done. Sign me up.
Cancelled useless Netflix last night.
How exactly will they do that? Content isn’t free. Blockbuster may be enjoying a better deal with the studios than Netflix gets, but that won’t last for long.
Blockbuster’s streaming service is nowhere in the same league as Netflix’s. That’s pure insanity.
Blockbuster’s streaming service is on demand only. Old releases are 3 dollars each. Rent 3 movies and you’ve already paid more than Netflix costs in a month. New releases are 4 – 7 dollars each. How is that better than Netflix when you could literally watch movies over and over and over and over every second of the day for one flat 8 bucks a month?
A better selection than Netflix?? In what universe? On television alone, Blockbuster doesn’t have one single television series available for streaming. How is that a better selection? Netflix has thousands upon thousands of more movies than Blockbuster has. It’s not even close.
Does Blockbuster have more new releases? Sure. So what? Since when did “new” equal “better”? I guarantee there are at least a thousand awesome movies on Netflix you’ve never seen. Just because they weren’t released in 2011 doesn’t mean they’re not worth seeing. Every time I log into my Netflix and glance through the categories I find 10, 20 movies to add my queue. This argument that Netflix streaming sucks because you can’t watch the latest Tyler Perry movie as soon as it comes out is really tiresome.
You don’t have to tell me that “new” doesn’t equal “better.”
But, I used to work at Blockbuster, and I’d say 95% (probably more) of customers are ONLY looking for what’s new. We’d give away coupons for old movies and people would throw them away or let them expire.
In any case, Blockbuster streaming = better late than never.
Ummm… I happen to like some old movies bbuster. And I know others do as well. I was in a blockbuster recently. I think I saw a tumbleweed blow by. It was a dead zone. I will not pay for movies individually. I want the one-stop shop that is Netflix. And I am sure other people do as well. I can wait a month for a new release. Netflix keeps me busy with some great recommendations.
Blockbuster sucks. Plain and simple.
WHAT MAKES YOU THINK BB CAN’T GO TO A FIXED MONTHLY FEE? THEY NOW BELONG TO DISH AND DISH HAS ALWAYS BEEN A MONTHLY FEE OPERATION.
What a condescending SOB. Hey, if you think NF streaming is great, then more power to you. But not everyone feels that way.
I agree, netflix has awesome selection. But we’re 1 of millions who have canceled their service on principle alone. To raise prices 60% for ppl who want movies streamed and by mail is just greedy and insane, especially in this economy. We will NEVER go back.
Well since it’s obvious that you know everything I think I will post this comment for everyone else. First of all Blockbuster has has VOD for quite sometime now. What they are talking about it Blockbuster starting its own streaming service just like Netflix. NOT a VOD service. I used to work for Blockbuster recently, and I am also a Netflix subscriber. In all the years that I worked for Blockbuster, and trust me it was a long time, they have never changed one of there program prices so drastically as a permanent pricing system. I never opted for the by mail service with Netflix because frankly, just like someone posted earlier, like seeing new release movies when they comes out. Now although Netflix does have some really great TV shows that I’ve been going through, their movies selections are far from adequate. I’ve seen most all of the movies worth watching and trust me “Tromo” films that Netflix has an abundance of, are not worth watching. Oh and by the way…maybe you should step into a Blockbuster or ask someone because your quote of the prices on rentals are, well incorrect. If Blockbuster gets this streaming service off the ground I wish them the best of luck and will be transferring my subscription. With the amount of contracts Netflix has lost, may even cancel before then.
which one has prince of persia that is the only movie i want to watch thx i love you
Netflix has it both as a DVD and streaming because its part of the Diseny/Starz selection, but watch it quick, it will be gone if they don’t renew the contract.
Lord, give the price hike a rest. I guarantee no one will remember it a year from now. As for all those people who will leave Netflix, whatever. I have zero interest in DVDs, so the price hike doesn’t affect me or the many other streaming-only customers. If I’m desperate for a DVD I’ll go to Redbox. As for new releases, most of the studios will hold them back for all-you-can-view streaming services like Netflix. If Netflix offered a pay-per-view service you’d see all the new releases you could want, but that’s not their business model (at least not at this time).
If/when Blockbuster/Dish signs on with the streaming ROKU BOX we’ll re-up with Blockbuster – ROKU does amazingly well with Netflix, but we miss the in-store/mail-swap that Blockbuster had going and having Netflix pull that 60% price hike stunt hasn’t set well with us at all – our billing date is the 16th… we’ll see where we stand then to see if we drop their dvd service… Hopefully, all these competing streams will sort out into something that will bring back the fun… it’s about “entertainment” you guys!!!
Oh, please, Dish my ass. Dish has Blockbuster, Dish is bidding for Hulu, Dish is going streaming to out-Netflix Netflix (with Starz content). Wooof! If Dish is so great, how come it’s #2 at its day job, satellite TV, and really only paying job).
Didn’t Dish try to buy DirecTV and got whacked by DOJ Anti-trust.
Yeah,it also boggles the mind how dish is #2. We had indirectv for 2 years and just dropped them for dish.
reason # 1 > equipment: The duo hddvr just blows away any eq directv offers. Plus, when I punch in a channel to watch,it isn’t a guessing game what channel it goes to(dtv box was HORRIBLE at being precise..and yes the batteries in remote were new)
#2 price. Our 1st 2 months when we started dtv were still over $60 each month. Our 1st 2 months @ dish were $45 TOTAL for 2 months.(for the same comparible package) Plus when the 3 month special is over,it’s STILL much cheaper than dtv.
#3> this was the kicker. Granted Im sure not many endured this problem with directv but about 10 days ago,I see a charge on our debit card of $396.15 for 2 ‘unreturned’ boxes. Needless to say I got on the horn with them pronto demanding an explanation. ‘Oh, we’re sorry sir’ she says ‘there seems to be a mix up on our part’ (YA THINK?) They were returned July 30 it shows. BUT in the meantime we’re still out $396.15…them saying it’ll take 5-7 business days to be credited back. I should start charging them interest for keeping our money for so long. Idiots!!
#4 The ONLY thing I missed about indirectv was mlb network. Hooray! Dish just added that this week!!
YESSSSSS – I can’t wait for someone/anyone to put, “Mr-old-bait-n-switch”, Netflix in their place by competing “head-to-head”. I was such a fan of Netflix until their “Dumba$$”, greedy, CEO decided to change a great deal, & excellent interface into a “rip-off” & a user interface, nightmare that waste your time searching. So, Netflix – you can go KICK YOURSELF. The way Netflix just squandered their customer’s loyalty with such blatant, disrespect is beyond customer etiquette or common sense. Hope the CEO gets fired for being the idiot who tried to fix what wasn’t broken. FIRED.
Netflix sucks
