EXCLUSIVE: ESPN may have put the scripted plans for its own primetime on hold following the demise of short-lived dramas Tilt and Playmakers, but its production unit is looking to become a supplier of scripted series to other networks. ESPN has sold its first scripted project, an untitled Boston sports fan comedy from former Scrubs executive producer Bill Callahan, to ABC. The project is described as a look at the relationship between four longtime guy friends, still living in their hometown outside of Boston, who gather once a week to watch one of their beloved teams play. Callahan is writing and executive producing, with ESPN Content Development’s executive producers Vinnie Malhotra, who is shepherding the company’s current scripted efforts, and Joan Lynch also expected to produce. UTA-repped Callahan, who worked with Bill Lawrence on 2 of his series, Scrubs and Spin City, most recently served as an executive producer on USA’s Psych.

Playmakers was terrible. Will they be able to get an actual sports license for the NFL, etc? If they make up some imaginary team that will eliminate a wealth of history from which to cull jokes from. Pony up ESPN.
So Jack Flack, you think “Playmakers was terrible”?! Then you must think NBC’s Whitney is “hilarious.”
EVERY RESPECTED TV CRITIC AND WRITER AGREES THAT JOHN EISENDRATH’S “PLAYMAKERS” WAS AMONG THE BEST ORIGINAL TV SERIES OF THE DECADE. So while you’re busy writing that spec script as you work part time at Arby’s, you shouldn’t take shots at TV shows that are universally considered high quality.
Who knew? The Sports Guy has Deadline in his morning web rotation…
Nobody better F w/ ESPN.
P.S. Go Lakers – I miss basketball.
if this is actually bill simmons you’re an incredible asshole. that show sucked; tv guide’s opinion isn’t gospel. stop trolling comments and work on the one article you publish every other week.
Callahan is one of the all time great guys in this business. Sounds like a solid project!
Wow, ESPN, owned by Disney, sold a show to ABC, also owned by Disney. Wow, that must have been difficult.
Playmakers was amazing. The only reason its not on the
air is because ESPN bowed down to the NFL like some weak
sauce b-tches. Its a crime that HBO or Showtime doesn’t
do something similar.
And two things B SIMMONS. ONE:I love arbys so lay off that guy.
TWO: Would Whitney (which is terrible) be 15% better if they cut out the laugh track? (Seriously…a f-cking laugh track? I kept waiting for Mr. Furley to come out)
Great it revolves around Boston and is from the writer of scrubs. . .FAIL.
Sounds like they are trying to piggyback off of “The League’s” success.
What, ESPN doesn’t cover Boston sports enough that they have to have a TV series revolving around it?
First an egregious magazine cover throwing up Boston sports in the nation’s faces, now this?
Good lord….
