EXCLUSIVE: Things are starting to move on The Terminator franchise, but a plan by rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger to put the first of two pictures in production for the fourth quarter of 2012 has forced director Justin Lin to drop out. But borrowing the film’s signature phrase “I’ll be back,” Lin has left the door open to a return if Ellison and Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes the sixth installment of The Fast and the Furious franchise.
The Terminator franchise has been under the radar since Ellison’s Annapurna Films spent over $20 million to buy film rights during the Cannes Film Festival, with Lin and Schwarzenegger attached. Lin wants to make the film but simply won’t be available, the same situation that prompted him to withdraw from Summit’s Highlander. Lin has been working closely with Schwarzenegger and Ellison to figure a way to end the James Cameron-hatched battle between humans and the cyborgs of Skynet. It would require some effort for Ellison to get the film underway by late next year. She hasn’t got a script and I don’t think she’s even hired a screenwriter yet. She also hasn’t set a studio partner, even though several are interested.
There is some reason to move quickly. One of the caveats involved in the rights deal with Pacificor (which spent $29.5 million to win the rights in bankruptcy court) is that certain rights revert back to Cameron due to a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018. Even that part of the story has gotten intriguing: While Cameron washed his hands of the Terminator franchise years ago, his close friend Schwarzenegger has dragged him into a brainstorming meeting or two, even though he is not officially involved. It’s also hard to imagine that Ellison can’t make two films and satisfactorily end the series by the time that rights situation develops.

hmm..that would be a long wait..ill bet they wanna see people reaction to expendables 2 and that other movie Arnolds doing first..so maybe they will and Lin will come back
Justin, run away from this shitstain franchise as Fast as you can…
I’d rather see him work on Fast Six. Five of the six movies were actually fun. Mindless, but still fun. People in Hollywood forget that movies CAN just be fun, and that’s why this franchise keeps making money: we want escapist fantasy.
OTOH, Terminator stopped being anything remotely close to fun after #2. Including the TV show. Let it die.
somebody get this man a coffin! Movies can be fun? no shit, look at the box office you idiot
Hmmm. Since they want to “reboot” this franchise, they really should have someone helm it with some visionary status. Someone with the weight of Arronofsky or Fincher or someone like that. Even Justin Lin’s fans have to admit that he’s most likely to assume the Michael Bay mantle than the James Cameron one.
This isn’t a “reboot”, it sounds like an ending to the series.
Joss Whedon has always talked about wanting to direct a Terminator film. With “The Avengers” on his résumé, perhaps he has a shot.
Meh, Justin’s wasting his potential talent on those car porn movies. He got his paycheck gigs out of the way, now he should tackle projects people might actually wanna see.
people ‘actually’ wanted to and did see the last F&F movie more than almost any other movie in the world this year…do you mean tackle a project you want to see?
It made money, but do people really want another one?
Yeah you need a director with vision. Someone WHO actually likes sci-fi.
As a sci-fi fan I suffer from “lackus originalius contentius”. It’s a condition that affects my ability to sit for two hours in a dark room full of strangers and enjoy images flashing before me on a two dimensional screen. I used to enjoy this activity very much. Unfortunately my condition is spreading to all my friends and even people I’ve never met. I’ve tried all the home remedies such as doses of cable, dvd, and netflix, but these are only temporary fixes. I usually wake up in the middle of the night with the sweats.
As treatment for my condition, I will go to the movies on an occasional Friday night and pay to see reboots and remakes as I wait for a true cure to come down the pipeline. I heard a new treatment of Terminator 4 + Blade Runner 2, followed by a chaser of Flatliners 2 and a snort of Robocop 2 might tide me over for a few weeks. I’ll have to wait and see.
Please reply if you know of any other treatments or possible cures.
Signed,
Somebody please green-light a sci-fi spec script.
Joss Whedon would be my top choice. Other directors I think would deliver interesting takes on the Terminator series: Paul Thomas Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Luc Besson, Brad Bird, David Fincher, Nicolas Winding Refn, Quentin Tarantino, Matthew Vaughn.
This is a job for Michael Bay. King of the mindless explosions and direction less plot.
Beat every last cent outta that dead old fractured franchise. At this point creatives need to embrace any if the amazing sic finscripts short stories or multiple part books rather than resurrect this old flayed beast.
Just get Josh Friedman back to continuing The Sarah Connor Chronicles and there will be peace in this world.
Joss Whedon has always talked about wanting to direct a Terminator film.
As long as he doesn’t write the script. Alien Resurrection was the last time Whedon tried to follow in Cameron’s footsteps and Alien Resurrection was godawful.
I agree that none of these remakes/sequels are original. However, is Justin Lin REALLY passing on all these opportunities he has stated he wants to shoot ANOTHER “Fast” movie?!
Move on, dude!
Isn’t Spielberg’s “Robopocalypse” basically just a fresh take on this story? Who wants to see a 60 year old “terminator” or do they propose to give him the creepy Jeff Bridges treatment in Tron?
Appropriately enough, the term in copyright law for that 35-year reversion is “termination.”
i really think that someone should at least make a termenator movie that sends kyle backk to sarha conner to make the terminator movies compleat
Honestly, just like everyone else who was ever intrigued by the Terminator franchise, I just want an ending. To everyone saying how broken and washed up it is, you realize between the 2&3 and the 3&4 films the same amount of time had elapsed. 6 years for those films, and 7 years between the 1&2. Hell, I think we’re on a a roll if we get the 5th film only 4 years after the last. And considering the 2018 rights deadline, a 5 year maximum wait for the 6th and final film. The Terminator plot and sequels has had a center on time elapsion, each movie moving us forward in the history of John Connor, Judgement Day, and the War in turn. I believe fans of the series deserve to have the story wrapped-up. In my head, the final movies should be a medley of eye-popping action, tongue-in-cheek nostalgia, and a satisfying plot to wrap up loose ends and finish off the series with a bang. That is…until some rookie decides to revamp and remake everything in 20 years. (Probably by then we’ll have real robots as actors, instead of computer animation…)
