‘X Factor’ Premiere Falls Short
It’s been an exhausting week for Fox’s reality chief Mike Darnell, who hasn’t slept much since the end of last week as he also oversaw the network’s Emmy telecast on Sunday. And he barely got some shut-eye last night, awaiting the ratings for the premiere of Simon Cowell’s The X Factor. They came in below most expectations: a 4.2 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 and 12.1 million viewers in the fast nationals, falling short of the January season premiere of American Idol (9.7/26, 21.6 million viewers in the fast nationals) as well as the April debut of NBC’s The Voice (5.1/13, 11.8 million) in the demo. (In the finals, X Factor is expected to go up 2 tenths to a 4.4 rating, though the other 2 shows also were adjusted up in the finals). Cowell had been talking about his goals of beating Idol in the ratings and averaging some 20 million viewers for The X Factor. Darnell
dismisses that as “Simon’s showmanship, something you’ve got to love him for.” But “we lived with the reality that there is an enormous interest in every show during premiere week, and honestly, we’re just relieved this morning. Other than crazy expectations, this is a very good premiere.”
Darnell points to the fact that fall has been traditionally tough for Fox and that The X Factor delivered Fox’s best premiere Wednesday ratings in 18 years and was the network’s most-watched fall debut in five years. “If it stays close to a 4 (rating in 18-40) for the 40 hours it’s on the air, that would be amazing for us,” he said. He declined to address the higher premiere number for NBC’s upstart The Voice, but I hear Fox’s explanation is that, because of Idol, there is a built-in appetite for singing competitions in midseason that might have helped The Voice.
Judging by Idol‘s ratings trajectory, which usually dips on Night 2, as well as the tough premiere Thursday competition, Darnell expects X Factor‘s numbers to go down a bit tonight, but “next week it becomes a little easier” with no major premieres or hourlong Modern Family/The Big Bang Theory airing against the reality series. “Hopefully, like many reality shows do during their run, I think X Factor has a real shot at building (in the ratings).”
As for many viewers today giving booted judge Cheryl Cole thumbs-up over her replacement Nicole Scherzinger after seeing them both on the panel in the premiere episode, “it’s easy to love the one that’s gone, but Nicole is great too. Both are stunning but also very different,” Darnell said. Does he regret the decision to replace Cole with Scherzinger? “No regrets,” he said, adding, “but I also love Cheryl.”

Nice spin coming from Fox! Not so long ago, maybe a few years, this rating would mean imminent chopping block for a show. The bar is so low these days I can’t imagine where it will be in a year or two.
The problem with X Factor is … it has no X Factor. It doesn’t look different, act different, feel different from other talent shows. It’s over produced and Paul Abdul’s over the top fake reaction to a contestant flashing them was staged. If the show was unique and provided some ‘real’ moments – then the show would have done better. It’s an over produced American Idol with a larger age gap to choose from…
It is far better than AGT… No peirs morgan, howie or osbourne… thanks be to god.
“American Idol” X ["America's Got Talent" + "The Voice"] – Ratings = “The X Factor”
Darnell says “X-Factor” had the “network’s most-watched fall debut in five years.” Didn’t “New Girl” do a bigger number the night before this (a 4.8 vs. a 4.2)?
Darnell was likely referencing the persons 2 and over number, which is what is connoted by the “most watched” language. X-Factor had over 12 million viewers in the prelim national ratings, New Girk had 10.3 million. You are correct that in A1849, the numbers you specifically noted, NEW GIRL was higher.
so tired of singing shows… ugh.
oh, and dancing shows… and Kardashians and housewives and…My God television needs a makeover!!!
It’s kartrashians—please get it right;)
Don’t watch is my thing, if you ignore they don’t exist.
Nice to see a jerk like Simon not living up to the hype.
Take it back across the pond buddy.
X Factor is a Great Show. Lots of real moments
It was hardly a bomb and likely will grow, but if anyone believes He was “relieved” I have a bridge to sell you. That’s just silly spin FOX. It was hardly embrassaing numbers but don’t say you were relived. No one believes a word you say after that.
lol of course hes not gonna say hes disappointed!! im sure his sponsors and advertisers are saying something else completely. the money that was put into promoting this show was HUGE by all standards because the expectations were extremely high. however, this is a real kick in the guts. if the show doesnt go up them it might be the end of it.
i dont knw cheryl cole well but while watching it with friends, pretty much every single one of my friends (6 in total) agreed that she was the most refreshing and interesting aspect of the show, and preferred her completely against Nicole. cheryl cole’s popularity on the show despite the short appearance has proven it self with her trending world wide on twitter as well as trending in cities like NYC and LA for hours even after her segment was over. even in Canada she was trending on twitter for hours after the show finished. 99% of the viewers demanded that they bring her back and take out nicole who came across as fake and obnoxious.
honestly from what i have seen the only 2 pple who stood on the show last night were cheryl and LA Reid. yet for some idiotic reason the focus of the promo has been centered fulling on simon and paula who pretty much everybody ignored.
i wonder if next year this show will be back after all
“Fox’s explanation is that, because of Idol, there is a built-in appetite for singing competitions in midseason that may have helped The Voice.”
Wow…first time I have ever heard of over saturating a genre being a good thing for ratings.
Let’s hope he’s wrong. Forty hours of during the fall on this show? I get stretching the shows to two hours each to keep ratings high and grab those ad dollars, but if you were one of the millions who doesn’t watch reality shows, that basically takes you off the channel for the whole night.
I mean through the first four days of the fall season, FOX will have aired reality six out of the eight hours (and yes I realize Kitchen Nightmares just aired it’s season-finale).
Yeah CBS doesn’t have all reality, all the time and their ratings are pretty high.
I hope they still bring Cheryl Cole in as a guest judge one day on the U.S. version of The X Factor as well as Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos from the UK X Factor.
That photo of Mike Darnell looks like it was lifted from an episode of America’s Most Wanted.
Does nobody tell him he looks like a creepy guy who hangs out near elementary schools?
Over produced, poorly directed, horrible audio mix, erratically paced, staged, contrived, insincere, no heart, with a cold irrelevant host…. could put up with all that if we got crazy Paula and acerbic Simon but where were they?
What does this show have to offer?
Loved Cole, who cares about Nicole?
Truthfully I was fatigued with this type of show with the awful voice but I had to at least see it because I love Simon and Paula and I was not disappointed in the least and that was shocking somewhat and annoying because I have another show to watch.
Somewhere, Cheryl Cole is laughing.
Of course, Mike Darnell is not going to say he regrets sacking Cheryl Cole, he and the show are stuck with Nicole Scherzinger aka ‘it’s all about me’. But I think they made a mistake and Cheryl Cole would have been a hit, she was refreshing and charming, I’ve no interest in watching Simon and Paula and Nicole is cringeworthy, so I could care less if the show comes back next year or not.
Who wants to bet that Cheryl will appear in final stages ( Live shows i bet) of ‘The X Factor’ UK or US?
The ratings for X-Factor only confirm what FOX began to realize last January: American Idol the show, not Simon Cowell, is the bigger star. Cowell was supposed to bring the audience, and they chose not to come along for the ride in as great a number. If X-Factor improves and delivers emotion the show will grow, but they can’t hang it all on simon.
I hear the network is having to give serious make-goods to advertisers based on the low 18-49. They were expecting in the 6.
Simon and Paula together again HOW BORING it’s so American Idol been there, done that, so i’ll pass. X FACTOR U.S.SUCKS !
There are just too many of these shows now, competition overload. Someone, new idea, please,
I saw part of the first hour and part of the second. I had read so many articles about the drama surrounding Cheryl Cole but had never seen her or heard her voice before. She was charming and I really loved her accent. It wasn’t as good in the second hour without her.
I’ve always thought part of Idol’s success came from the mid-season launch when people are ready for something new. Right now there’s a lot more competition with people trying other new shows and the long awaited return of old favorites.
1. Cheryl was really good, refreshing and charming. I really liked her
2. Too much attention on Simon and Paula.. same old thing.. getting boring
3. Mr.Darnell stop lying!
Why would Mr. Darnell stop lying? The better you are at spinning the truth 180 degrees, the better you do in high business/politics. There is no consequences, only positive reinforcement to continue this behavior and reap the benefits. Perhaps if we didn’t all aspire to be these people, things might improve.
This was too over produced and the pacing was deadly slow. Do we need the whole song? Bring back the intimate audition room, the real people….all these performer’s felt like they were picked for a corny sad story or already had agents. Most disappointing was Simon who seemed determined to prove he was nice. He always mocked the sad stories and we loved him for it on Idol. And I missed the terrible performers. Putting it on a giant stage w an applauding audience was the real mistake. They cheer for everyone so it’s not about talent any more. I have been Simon’s biggest fan for years and I was simply bored……
