FX’s flagship drama Sons of Anarchy continues to grow. The series’ 90-minute Season 4 premiere last night became the most-watched episode in the series’ history in Live+Same Day with 4.94 million viewers, and FX projects that it will likely be the most-watched single episode ever for an FX original series in Live+7. In total viewers, SOA was up a whopping 20% from the show’s third-season debut. In adults 18-49, it delivered 3.22 million viewers, up 15%. For the night, including the premiere airing and two encores — one at 11:30 PM and one at 1 AM — the SOA premiere drew a combined 7.25 million viewers, 4.76 million of them in the 18-49 demo. That was up 28% in viewers and 24% in 18-49 vs. the Season 3 premiere multi-telecast delivery.

Sons getting it done. Good on ‘em.
How has this show been exempt from Emmy nods and wins? I love Mad Men and Breaking Bad, but this show is right in the mix with them. Obviously this is a statement of opinion…but what does everyone else think?
Seasons 1 and 2 yes, 3 was a mess.
I agree that it’s in the mix with MM and BB, but I doubt it would win over them. SOA is more entertaining than MM, faster paced than BB and one of my fave shows but I don’t see it winning over either one in Best Show.
It should definitely be nominated though.
Why not The Wire? I love SoA, but The Wire is the best show ever to air on tv, and it never got anything. Emmys are a bogus joke
This show should be a lesson to the Networks on how to build your audience using Netflix and Online Streaming. I know several people (myself included) who didn’t watch any of the first 3 seasons “live” but caught onto the show via the Netflix streaming of the first 2 seasons and Hulu for the 3rd. It only drove my interest to tune in for season 4, as I was finally caught up enough to join the broadcasts.
A very good point, consequence. The network suits are too snobbish to dare take a lesson from a cable network.
And such is why they will continue to decline.
I agree. I also was introduced to this show via Netflix and gradually caught up to the broadcasts. It seems as if all of my favorite shows are on FX these days.
yeah, too bad these shows are on FX. Neither FX or Fox puts anything on the OnDemand. Now apparently they only air the shows on the debut day, instead of multiple airings a week. AND they don’t put anything online until 30 days after airing (if at all).
I forgot it was on and now have completely missed the first ep. No additional airings this past week.
BOO Fox!!!!
For all his scandal and such, Sutter and SOA are teaching a master’s class on how to optimize your show’s reach: using streaming as a way of cultivating new viewers, engaging their fans at a personal level, allowing himself to be viewed as real, passionate and invested. All of which allows more and more viewers to embrace SOA as *their* show.
I was about to post this. Whenever I’m behind in a series that’s a few years old, I don’t even bother to watch unless it’s at least put on a marathon, or I have access to all the shows on DVD and now Netflix.
I expect Mad Men to get a huge bump in ratings when it airs season 5, thanks to netflix.
I get a taste of a lot of cable shows thanks to Netflix, I didn’t watch American Pickers and Pawn Stars until I caught a few episodes on NF a year or so ago, then added it to my DVR list.
Sorry…this episode was not very good.
Just being real about it.
Agreed. Lame and lazy writing.
Kurt get you head out of your ass. I read the pilot. It was “Okay.”
You ripped Shakespeare, however, it’s not executed.
That’s why no Emmy’s. You’re not Sopranos…not even close.
Show last night sucked BAD on so many levels…don’t have time to write about all here.
In related news, Veena Sud has just started up a heroin habit and a Twitter account. “WTF Matt Weiner, why you kill Rosie Larsen? Yr a douche! LOL” her first tweet reads. “Fine fine I am rebel with daddy issues. Stick it up your Emmy old farts! LOL” her second tweet reads.
Look for a 27 percent jump in The Killing’s second season debut.
So this show is a documentary, right? Cause it just feels so REAL.
Did they go back to their roots or is still a Night-time Soap Opera?
Lol.
“Real”, meaning your opinion? Because that’s not “real” for me.
You should only hope to write as well as Kurt Sutter.
I read the pilot script for Sons. It’s “okay.” Kurt has his head up his ass as to how good he is. Wanting/Blaming Emmy’s for not being nominated etc.
To his credit, he laid out great characters on paper initially, but clearly stole from Shakespeare. Further, the execution is not there. This is not Soprano quality…not even close.
The first show of this new season sucked BAD on many levels.
Kurt…get in touch with reality.
Fan of the show but very disappointed with the season opener. Felt like an episode of ER or NYPD Blue. Some of the worst opening music I’ve ever heard. Will try another couple of episodes and hope it gets better, but not feeling it at the moment.
Were you actually watching SOA?
The impressive opening ratings for this show says it all. Kurt Sutter connected to his audience. He always has. Anybody who has a soul is hooked on this show the very first time they watch it. Or at least everyone I know. Congrats SOA. You rock.
Wow seriously…the WIRE was on for 5 seasons and not one Emmy consideration and this ish goes 3 seasons and all of yall got your panties in a bunch. There is not one sitcom with black leads coming out of Hollywood going on 5 yrs. and I say sitcom because we always had a decent shot at making folks laugh…it doesn’t seem to bother
anyone that TV looks like 1960!! There are probably not more than 200 black/Hispanics working consistently behind the scenes…and b4 you respond I’ve been on sets I know.
THE WIRE dealt with inner-city Black problems, SONS OF ANARCHY deals with tattooed criminal biker problems. In both cases we’re talking about groups of people that TV Academy members would cross the street to avoid and so the shows get no recognition, despite the outstanding writing.
YEAHH!! Love this show. It’s about time the Emmys and Globes start recognizing this. Katy Sagal totally deserved that surprise win last year and hopefully she gives another great performance this season.
Netflix + Word of mouth + quality programming = Big ratings
Networks needs to start realizing this.
Emmy’s and nominations are irrelevant. This is a quality show with a brilliantly talented ensemble cast that feels authentic. The fans love it and are only building on it’s base. FX has caught lightning in a bottle. They should be proud and honor this group of talented artists.
I am a faithful viewer. I never missed an episode. Last season was non-sensical and very hard to follow. These bikers boarding a cargo plane on their bikes to fly to Ireland and search for a stolen baby was crazy stuff. This show is at it’s best when the action takes place inside of Charming. I think this season is pointed in that direction. The new people added to the cast look interesting.
