Can News Corp Escape The Scandal Unscathed?
U.S. prosecutors are checking to see if News Corp violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. They have have written to request info on alleged bribes paid by its employees to UK police, Bloomberg reported. The inquiry comes on the heels of a Justice Department and FBI probe investigating claims that victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks had their phones hacked by News Corp employees. The request for information in the bribery case doesn’t carry the same legal force as a grand jury subpoena, which would compel a response under law. News Corp is the target of three UK police investigations and a Parliamentary probe on phone hacking by reporters at the News of the World. The company shut down the newspaper and abandoned BSkyB takeover plans after allegations that its reporters deleted voice mails from a murdered schoolgirl’s phone.
In London meanwhile, Scotland Yard said it won’t force reporters at The Guardian to reveal their sources on the bribery and phone hacking cases after all. They had sought the names under the UK’s Official Secrets Act, normally used to prosecute spies. “This decision does not mean that the investigation has been concluded,” the police said in a statement. The department said their probe “has always been about whether a police officer has leaked information and gathering any evidence that proves or disproves that.” The Daily Telegraph and Sky News have reported that a detective’s arrest was linked to information given to The Guardian newspaper. A court hearing was scheduled for Sept. 23.

I wonder if they will investigate the other News gathering institutions owned by the “Fox”? – does Fox News have similar practices? it’s the Elephant in the room! I know that where there’s certain practices on one side of a business it invariably leaks into the other whether intentional or not.
Possibly it’s a beat up, but heck the public need to know if there is hacking or not??
If the employees are too scared to ask the questions, then the govt. needs to restore faith in the corporation?

You really think government could restore anything…? what a effing joke dude… DOJ move on Murdoch is purely political. As far as one side leaking into business matters of another, it could only happen with Murdoch’s blessing and Rup would never be that bold….
Why is an investigation of a news gathering institution political? if your murdered child had had their phone messages tapped for a salacious story would you think that was the right sort of journalistic freedom? or if someone in the WTC had their phone hacked is that patriotic or is it un-patriotic? if it makes a good story is it right? is it respectful? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but it does make me uncomfortable to know that a corporation has made money by playing well beyond what is accepted as fair.
Also if as you say “Rup” isn’t that bold, then you would also have to say that the easiest thing in the world is to run a little studio, a little news corporation, and all with the best most reliable information at hand. Cute isn’t it?
There is an Elephant in the room, and no one will touch it… why?
Investigating 9/11 victim hacking does not sound political. The FBI would investigate that, if credible, under any political scenario.
Typical right wing reactionary flacking. Murdoch and his “news” corp have been violating the law for some time and getting away with it because of payoffs. Can there be any question that Rupe knew what was going on or that it was sanctioned corporate wide as a standard practice? He loves the paper business and, fittingly, it will be his undoing. I hope the FBI takes an endoscope to his rectum and finds all the evil that lurks up there. This is a man who is the epitome of cynical and who fosters the worst kind of invidious propaganda. So long you old saggy punter. I hope you live long and suffer more.
