EXCLUSIVE: ABC, which has new fairytale-themed series Once Upon a Time slated to launch next month, has bought another drama with magical elements. The project, from Kings creator Michael Green, has received a put pilot commitment. It centers on a female cop who, after pursuing a seemingly unsolvable case, discovers a magical world that exists within New York City. 20th Century Fox TV is producing through a script deal Green signed there last season, with Green and his manager, 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff, executive producing.
Heroes alum Green had the idea for the project last year, but after seeing two other projects with similar premises sell, including Ron Moore’s 17th Precinct to NBC, he and 20th decided to shelve his and roll his deal to this year as Green also was busy on the feature side. Then in January, Green was asked to rewrite the script for the ABC/ABC Studios horror thriller The River. When his version was picked up to pilot, Green was offered a rich deal to serve as showrunner on the pilot and the potential first cycle of the show. Green signed on and is now working on River‘s eight-episode midseason order. ABC topper Paul Lee is a known fan of The River, and because of his relationship with Green through the series, Green’s 20th TV project was taken first to ABC. On the feature side, WME-repped Green co-wrote Green Lantern and has the script Moses heating up at Warner Bros.

Okay, now *that* sounds like Fables.
It’ll be interesting to see where it goes – if it goes to series.
Way, WAY back in the day, NBC aired a mini-series called The Tenth Kingdom, all about a fantasy world within NYC, populated by all the familiar fairy-tale characters. Access was through Central Park.
Everything old is new again.
Erwin did such a job for Green on Kings it lasted 2 episodes..Stoffs only claim is he reps
Keanu who has not had a success in 6 years
Rotenberg is good there
Please stay on The River, don’t let them screw it up.
Yay for Mike! He’s a great, talented guy who deservers all the success he has gotten.
Now when is Camp Beverly Hills Cop coming out?
Was there any pilot picked up this year that wasn’t “put” or “with penalty”? Doesn’t seem like the best business model, networks –
I was thinking the exact same thing!
This continues the networks development deal pattern of giving shows to writers who have failed miserably.
Keep up the good work.
We’ll have our specs waiting in January.
Loving NYC as a character!!! Now let’s put NYC actors to work!
Typical. Another good writer gets another put pilot deal.
They have absolutely no imagination at the broadcast nets. You can stir the pot of crap all day long….it’s still crap.
Hey! Neil Gaiman called; he wants his plot back!
I think that ABC should not have cancelled All My Children or One Life to Live. They could keep Desperate Housewives on longer. Also, the new fall season has hardly started so viewers are just discovering the new shows. They need more time so that viewers can become hooked to a new show. Unfortunately when they do they cancel it when there is a great cliffhanger like there was on Eastwick. That seems to be the pattern of TV now a days cancel after a few episodes without giving the viewers a chance to find the shows.
