Sheesh…that accent from Leo is about as ham-handed as it gets. Not Keanu Reeves in Dracula bad, but not that good.
I live in England and this is a pretty good accent.. You wouldn’t believe how awful it is to listen to some people here.
NEXT UP: Leo as Sinatra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question— What exactly is DiCaprio using to blackmail producers?
uh……..oh.
Zzzzz made for Oscars
Even more so than with Aviator, DiCap is glaringly, pointlessly miscast–completely in over his head.
And I’m sorry, but even if this film romanticizes Hoover only 6%, that’s 6% too much. He was easily one of the greatest traitors to the values and integrity of this nation to ever reach such a level of power, and his perverse death-grip control over the FBI represents a scandalous legacy of shame this country has still yet to face.
Admit it. You teared up a little when you wrote that.
tn is my hero – doubt that at your peril.
yeah why glorify the guy who created and led the greatest crime fighting organization in the world.
The guy playing ‘Dwight Eisenhower’ was damn good.
LOL! Very good.
It’s a shame, I was hoping this would look better.
No oscar here for Leo.
That settles it! The academy can save a lot of time and money this year by just having T view trailers and declare who wins! I’m going to recommend this at the next mtg! Thanks!
Leo in senior J. Edgar Hoover mode looks remarkably like Orson Welles in full Charles Foster Kane makeup ….. creepy. But both are/were dramas of opportunistic, immoral, craven and ultimately fallen men. Trailer looks solid.
Will likely be a good film overall, it is Eastwood at the helm after all. However I do agree entirely that Di Caprio is miscast here and his accent does sound very botched. He does a very narrow kind of character well and that is it, never anything outstanding in my opinion.
Eastwood hasnt made a good film since Million Dollar Baby
Letters from Iwo Jima was good.
Gran Torino was solid.
Hahahahah! You funny….
The 40 Year Old Virgin was good.
laughed so hard gurv, just blew a nut out of my sack! just havin’ a ball..
Troll 2 was genius.
And Million Dollar Baby sucks BALLS – so that tells you something right there.
THE CHANGELING was vastly under appreciated and overlooked at award time.
Yep. Not interested. Completely miscast…
This looks like “Mr. Saturday Night.” Why isn’t David Paymer in it?
Brilliant call. Where’s the scene where J. Edgar says to Clyde, “You see what I did?” And Clyde says, “Yeah, I sees ya.” And then they make out.
Knowing that Clint hired Oscar-winning openly gay screenwriter Dustin Lance Black to pen the script, I wonder how much (or how little) the film will explore J. Edgar Hoover’s alleged a) homosexuality and b) cross-dressing. Apparently, he had a lifelong “close friendship” with fellow FBI Associat Director Clyde Tolson, they lived together for years as “roommates” and when he died, Hoover left 100% of his estate to Tolson. Sounds like they were longtime (closeted) gay lovers/partners – in a classic case of projection, Hoover sought his entire career to blackmail others so that they couldn’t out/blackmail him first. It’s also been reported that Hoover used to like to dress in drag as…wait for it…Vivian Vance!? The trail looks like it touches lightly on the subject (re: hand-touching scene in the car), but I just hope Dirty Harry doesn’t whitewash the true story in favor of well-intention, solemn Oscar bait. Cmon, at least we want a passionate kiss between Armie and Leo!!
This post has “those sneaky gays are bad” written all over it. He was not only a traitor to us heterosexuals but also to our country… lol
The sheer phoniness and creepiness of DiCaprio’s woefully fake and distracting old age appliance proves why make up maestro Dick Smith richly deserves his honorary Oscar this year. “Little Big Man”, “The Exorcist” and “Amadeus” all featured incredible “Age” make ups by the master Smith. Why is it decades later no one can seem to pull this effect off as convincingly as Smith did so long ago? Only his protege Rick Baker comes close! If the Hoover make up looks this bizarre and rubbery in fleeting trailer shots, I fear it will prove unintentionally laughable and distracting while lingering on screen in the final product.
I think Philip Seymour Hoffman deserves the Oscar. Oh wait, that wasn’t him – I thought he looked thin. Oh, that’s Leo in makeup.
Why does everyone always bash his accents? Aviator, Blood Diamond, & Shutter Island are all excellent films. He is one of the best actors working and this will no doubt be Anything short of spectacular.
Not only did Leo’s accent suck in BLOOD DIAMOND, but the movie stunk – and that sukz cuz it was about an important subject. So overblown and over the top.
THE AVIATOR just gets better on every viewing though.
The guy playing ‘Dwight Eisenhower’ was damn good
Really? in what way? how the heck could you even notice
him in the trailer?
You might want to Google sarcasm -_-
Next. Here’s hoping The Great Gatsby is every bit as lively as this is lifeless.
Okay, I admit it: I’m too chicken shit to post using my real name (just in case Di Caprio’s people will fuck with anyone who dares to dis their guy).
But seriously, Leo’s old-guy voice sounds like an Andy Samberg SNL spoof. Couldn’t they get an actor with more bottom? Leo’s a great actor but here he looks like a teenager playing Willy Loman. It’s no “Ishtar” but it looks pretty lame.
Again, as in “The Aviator”, DiCaprio has nowhere near the gravitas to play a role like this. Clint should have known better. (So should have Scorsese.) Egos get in the way of good judgment and the public misses out on what might have been a very good film (or two, or three…)
Leo was literally breathtaking as a young actor. Basketball Diaries, Gilbert Grape, Titanic – all incredible. He really did not transition into adult roles well. Sure he gets the parts and sure he’s bankable, but these days he’s nothing more than acceptable.
sorry, I really like Leo but this looks pretty lame. And Arnie Hammer making puppies eyes at Leo… ugh. Maybe the gay storyline will be handled well but the trailer makes it feel like they don’t know what to do with the fact that the biggest movie star on the planet makes out with a dude in this film.
“Any man can be corrupted.”
The line implies J. Edgar didn’t start out as the dishonest, threatening, borderline irrational weasel that he was throughout, a purveyor of hate and bigotry who disregarded the law and the Constitution, and like so many of his ilk today, he wrapped his crimes and immorality in the flag and justified it with or as patriotism.
Leave him to continue rotting. I guess the DeCaprio of the next generation will have this as an excuse to produce “Rumsfeld” or “Cheney.”
As others have said, Leo seems miscast again in this Oscar-bait movie.
And Clint Eastwood hasn’t directed anything decent since Space Cowboys.
Great subject never appropriately done on film before (does anyone remember “The F.B.I. Story” with James Stewart and Vera Miles?) and timely too as harbinger of historical things to come. Not surprised that the producers of “Frost/Nixon” would gravitate toward such material. Eastwood is major; DiCaprio will always get an A for ambition from me. The man wants to act. Maybe he’s miscast but he never phones it in. I think he would be a good theater actor. DiCaprio doing O’Neill or Albee or trying a great new contemporary playwright would be interesting.
Regardless of reviews I’ll be seeing this the first weekend.
I trust Clint Eastwood, I trust Leo Dicaprio – I just don’t trust J. Edgar Hoover.
I think Leonardo will surely get a nomination for an Academy Award. I think he’ll get a Oscar nomination at least. He is incredible and he is amazing. And I think he will get it. It’s an incredible performance, just wonderful.
Interesting, I just saw your post word for word on another entertainment site. Imagine that. Publicists out in force I see… or obsessed fans, I can barely tell the difference sometimes.
Incredible performance..have you seen the entire thing? He may get a nod because thats what the movie was made for Oscar nods but with that accent he’s not winning.
Snarkity snark snark snark.
Shut up.
I didn’t buy DiCaprio as Howard Hughes in The Aviator ’cause I thought he was entirely too young for the role. Now a few years later, Leo’s filled out physically and got some gravitas to him. From this trailer, he looks good as J. Edgar.
All you rainbow flag wavers, forget about a full-on, man-to-man kiss between Edgar and Tolson. All you’ll get is the hand-holding in the car. This is still America.
Vivian Vance, though? LOL
I haven’t really liked this run of Eastwood flicks (with the exception of Gran Torino; set in an alternate-universe Detroit where there are lots of Cambodians…WTF?), but as a history fan, I’ll be checking this out.
“This is still America”? First of all openly gay academy award winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black wrote this screenplay, and won that academy award for the film “Milk”, which definitely had scenes with more than just gay men holding hands. So i truly expect more of the same in this film.
Anyways, i agree with Leo lookin like hes been miscast here but will wait to see the entire film before critiquing.
Fuck! I can’t wait! This is going to be awesome!
