UPDATE: ICM says it will still represent Academy Award-nominated writer Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) in theater. But he left his movie/TV team at ICM in recent days. I hear it followed some drama when the agency dropped his actress wife Soña Tatoyan as a client. Shortly after, Rivera sent the agency a note saying he couldn’t continue with ICM even though he thought they’d repped him ably. He booked into 3 projects including an HBO pilot. Because he’s so busy, he told ICM that he won’t seek a new TV/movie rep until 2012.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

As usual at the ICM strip mall the left hand does not talk to the right hand so the client uses his middle finger.
Any so-called “artist” who forces someone to represent a spouse/kid/brother etc is no artist. People should only represent those they are passionate about and if not you really aren’t doing your loved one any favors in the long run. You’re just putting pressure on someone to devote their resources away from those they really care about. Tacky and classless. ICM, you haven’t lost anything, you’ve gained something-more time to represent people you care about.
Big difference between declining to rep a spouse/kid/cousin/brother-in-law and dropping said relative. The former is just fine, the latter won’t end well. Agencies use the term “fire” interchangeably with “drop” when it comes to clients. Would you continue doing business with a company that fired your spouse (as opposed to just not hiring them in the first place)?
Dumb, DUMB move re: Soña. I seriously just don’t get it. Wasn’t that on everyone’s Agenting 101 test?
At first I was shocked. Then I realized that I read the name in the headline as Joan Rivers.
Good for him! Agencies don’t like husband-wife “teams”, they fear the power! One major agency calls it “…that woman thing…”
As I client there, you can tell that the culture is really broken and that there is a real lack of vision. Which has played out with so many clients leaving and so many others preparing to leave. But what good is a big agency is every department operates at odds with each other?
Maybe his wife isn’t talented. Just because they rep you doesn’t mean they should rep your wife.
How’s your marriage these days?
thank god they still rep him in theater. ICM is a joke.
When a husband and wife team work so closely together, it absolutely makes sense to be represented by the same agency. It doesn’t have much to do with being a true “artist”. It’s just more convenient to be under the same roof.

Good. I think it’s ridiculous to rep a relative if you don’t care about them , just to keep the talent happy. Agenting is a Business. People don’t book – they are out. It’s not personal , it’s business.
