Deadline revealed a couple of weeks ago that Robert Zemeckis was dropping out of the Warner Bros drama Replay so he could direct Denzel Washington in the Paramount thriller Flight. Paramount just made that move official today:
HOLLYWOOD, CA (September 9, 2011) — Paramount Pictures announced today that Academy Award ® winner Denzel Washington will star, and Academy Award ® winning director Robert Zemeckis will helm, FLIGHT for the studio. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce under the Parkes/MacDonald production banner along with Zemeckis, Steve Starkey, and Jack Rapke under their ImageMovers banner. The movie is set to begin shooting this October in Atlanta, GA.
Written by John Gatins (“Dreamer: Inspired By a True Story,” “Real Steel”), FLIGHT tells the redemption story of “Whip” (Washington), a commercial airline pilot who pulls off a heroic feat of flying in a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight carrying 106 people. While the world begs to embrace him as a true American Hero, the everyman struggles with this label as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behavior the night before the doomed flight.
The project marks first ever teaming of Washington and Zemeckis, while also marking a return to live-action for the director, who previously helmed such hits as “Castaway,” “Forest Gump,” “Back To The Future,” and the live-action & animated classic “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.
Zemeckis is repped by CAA, Washington is repped by WME and Gatins is repped by UTA.

i heard he’s doing Replay in June 2012. Which brings one question to mind, why would two studios think Robert Zemeckis is still any good? And why would Warners wait for him for such a good script? Did no one see Mars Needs Moms? Or how about A Christmas Carole 3D? Paramount, it’s too late for you. Warner Brothers count your blessings and run. Fast.
This is great news. Flight was a terrific script.
I was actually looking forward to Replay.
I saw Denzel Washington’s movie “Safe House”. It’s good.
It’s not DW’s movie. It’s David Guggenheim’s movie. He sold that as a naked spec. It’ll always be HIS movie. It’s high time this town quit forgetting that writers are the creators.
Zemeckis haters — seriously… give it up. Name one modern young filmmaker that you honestly think can match Bob Z’s career in the years to come. Yes, the motion capture diversion was misguided but look at the movies he’s made. He’s one of the great directors. Having said that, I do wish he picked a better project than this –there are much better scripts out there than this.
Many of us in the entertainment industry are also private pilots on the side. Zemeckis is a long time pilot, so I can see why he chose this. Great news. Also great to hear he’s coming back to live action. His films were always extremely well done, entertaining and visually at the forefront (his blocking and mis en scene is almost as good as Spielbergs). I look forward to it.
This movie sounds good. I hope he does replay after. I really really love that script. I believe in Robert Z. Anyone who doesn’t doesn’t understand what a great filmmaker he is.
For me…Denzel is the shit. He’ll get my money every time. If you filmed a scene with him describing the best way to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I would buy a ticket.
