New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie today pulled the plug on a tax credit for Jersey Shore, likening it to “wasteful spending.” The MTV reality show’s producer 495 Productions was to receive a $420,000 tax break for filming in the state as part of an economic development initiative. It’s a tiny victory for the Italian Americans who have repeatedly railed against the hugely successful show and who reached out, along with a New Jersey assemblyman, to ask Christie to block the subsidy. Though the governor says he doesn’t want to police the content of specific projects, he doesn’t count Jersey Shore among those that best benefit the state. “I am duty-bound to ensure that taxpayers are not footing a $420,000 bill for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the state and its citizens,” Christie wrote.

Look, I despise this show and all it stands for, but a tax credit is a tax credit and it should available to everyone who qualifies fair and square. You can’t pick and choose who it will go to because a few people don’t “like” a project. So breaks are only given to productions that are in good taste? Who determines that?
Maybe I’m missing something in the details but a tax credit to encourage production, which it has, shouldn’t be held to this kind of arbitrary judgements.
Agreed on all counts. This is a vile show but Christie just increased the costs of production by $420,000 which will no doubt trickle down to those who can least afford it being fired.
these stereotypes have been around since SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and THE GODFATHER.
anyone with a brain knows this is a small portion of Italian Americans. I’m 22 and HATE this show but whatyagonnado…eh?
by cancelling credits u just add more attention to it and cross the line into all sorts of minefields regarding these tax breaks.
a lot of movies that get these down in Louisiana and elsewhere just plain SUCK but they still get approved.
Considering how stupid-popular this show is, I highly doubt anyone is going to be losing their jobs over this move. MTV’s profits might be down 420k, but that’s about it.
It’s interesting that democrats only care about tax cuts when they are aimed at the film/tv industry, and “green” projects. For a bunch of folks who say it’s wrong for Christie to pick and choose, you sure do a hell of a lot of just that.
I agree. And I heard “rumors” that Christie was thinking about running for President. Christie needs to stick with his day job. The media is making mincemeat of Rick Perry and they would have field day with Christie.
No matter how you slice it, this was not fair and I wonder if he has the authority to veto it. Isn’t that the Tax Dept’s call? I hope they appeal the decision.
You really must be kidding. First – the govt does almost everything unfairly. This show does not need credits. If they can afford to pay these talentless idiots even $100k per year, then guess what…they don’t need our taxpayer’s dollars!
If you think they are so great then please send them a check on your own.
You speak the truth. Some people may not like it, but unless it’s written somewhere in the incentive/law that exceptions can be made then the governor has no right to take that away from them. Without knowing the details of the tax credit that’s my opinion.
Governor, going back on your word… not nice.
I really dislike this show but Christie pulling the tax credit is an awful thing to do. Punishing the people that show hires simply b/c you don’t like it is the typical Republican bullshit that makes me hate this party. Go ahead you fat fuck, run for President. Let’s see how far you get,
Hardly. This is typical democrat BS, even though it’s a republican doing it. A real Republivan would end all the tax subsidies period, as he should have done. A democrat would give it to the most environmentally friendly production and just as quickly pull it from a anything that doesn’t further the twisted agenda of the right.
“This is typical democrat BS, even though it’s a republican doing it.”
Seriously, what the eff?! How in the world does that make any sense? If it’s a Republican whose doing it, it’s (in this case at least) a Republican thing.
…he said what u said but dems are typically pro-subsidy ie tax credit or funding for industries that they want to promote ie green tech, corn-fuel, etc…
repubs dont believe in giving tax-breaks for any industry. of course you will get the one exception that both parties agreed upon like the bank bailout which since then has caused this whole “if it cant swim on its own then let it sink” mentality.
yadda yadda yadda…
that makes no sense
That’s an astounding bit of double-think you got going on there, John.
FIST PUMP!
Ha! Hey, if they can pay for trips to Italy then they can pay their own taxes. Why should the good citizens of the Garden state foot the bill for Snookie’s spray tan?
This is rather shocking — no matter what you think of a project — they are filming a tv show and they have every right to the tax credit. LAWSUIT.
Thanks Governor Sandwiches! Now at least I won’t have to chase runaway productions to Jersey in order to work. Thank god!
I just wrote to my CA Assemblymember today asking him why our legislature did not give tax credits for productions in this state. Why don’t you do the same?
Because it’s going to be tough to convince a bankrupt state to subsidize a multi-billion dollar industry and stamps cost money.
The Right Coast , what the hell are you talking about. It was the Demo’s who petitioned the tax credit be pulled.
Get your facts straight . Christie 2012!
Oh puhleeze. He’s got a 20 point negative … IN NEW JERSEY. Insiders have already admitted he can’t be re-elected.
Every liberal on the planet hopes you nominate Jabba the Hut. PLEASE do it.
taxes are for public services. this show is NOT a public service. How about roadways, or creating government jobs, or paying teachers? that would be $500G well spent. controversial maybe, but in my opinion it was the right thing to do.
Uhm, it’s a TV tax credit. There are taxes for other things, you do know that, right? JERSEY SHORE qualifies just like any other show filmed. Christie is a moron (like we didn’t know that by now?).
Taxes are for public services like “creating jobs”?
What do you think these types of tax credits do and why do you think governments offer them? Tax credits give studios and companies an incentive to produce their movie or show in that state, thus creating jobs that wouldn’t be otherwise be there.
I found it humorous that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie thinks that New Jersey residents are not like the people on the show. Does he ever venture outside of the capitol building to the night club scenes and watch the people who are that age? Obviously not.
yea but a little part of me thinks that they act that way because of the show, not the other way around. its created a lot of hype and kids look up to celebrities.
they were that way before the show. the show was created because they were that way. come on.
No, they really act that way. I lived in Jersey for 6 months. It was enough.
The vast majority of people in NJ DO NOT act the way the people on the Jersey Shore do. And, many of those people that do act that way in NJ are actually from NY.
Is this a joke? The show’s done nothing for the state? I guess he is choosing to ignore the multiple examples of the show increasing tourism and spending at the shore. Watch season 3 – you’re telling me all those people crowded the boardwalk and spent their money before? Right… they were there to watch the filming and spending as they did so. Moron.
If the show is hugely successful then $400,000+ is affordable. My concern is the precedence this will set. Companies might be wary to set up if they suspect tax deals might be revoked.
Big lawsuit coming. 1st amendment . Equal Protection. Very stupid on Christie’s part…
The point is, the show is making loads of money. Give the tax credit to a starting fledgling production.
He just publicly “misspoke”.
No, the point is, however humiliating and despicable the show is, it qualifies for the tax kickbacks – er, tax credits.
The exalted Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, did exactly the same thing to Robert Rodriguez’ film “Machete” – after the fact! Perry made a very large effort to congratulate Rodriguez and the Austin film industry, complete with perfect hair and smiley photo ops and promises of tax credits before the filming began, then reneged on ALL of it when the tax credit bill came due – simply because they “didn’t like the way the film portrayed Texas”. So, “Tough shit, producers! I’m the Governor and I sez what happens!”
Just like Perry, Christie’s a nothing more than a bully puppet whose strings are pulled by someone higher up.
yea, its a TV show. but its a degrading TV show. sometimes real italian americans get sick of hearing the words ‘guido’ and ‘fist pump’. So Snookies gonna have to give up top shelf liquor for well drinks, and the guys won’t be able to pop $500 bottles of champagne. The show can still function without this small fee that can otherwise go to places that NEED it right now. it’s like that old cliché movie line…”at what cost???” in case you’ve forgotten, many schools are getting major cutbacks. and have you SEEN the roads in New Jersey? There are laws, but this is something called a judgement call, and its what makes America great.
Just a political stunt. It’s BS. Jersey Shore is horrid, of course. but it is a business that brings jobs. The GOP is form over substance. Bet if it were money for an oil company …
Best thin g the Guv has done this year. Without the tax credits, this show’s demise can only be accelerated. Unless it moves to Vancouver! (BC Shore?)
I’m half italian but always just thought of myself as white but after watching Jersey Shore, now I think I’m bi-racial.
These guys are idiots, but NJ can’t deny that the show has brought in a huge amount of tourism/money to the area. This seems like an incredibly dumb decision, but I’m not surprised Gov Christie is behind it.
Explain to me why a successful show needs government welfare to function? Explain to me why New Jersey taxpayers need to subsidize something that clearly stands on its own?
It’s really amazing the lack of basic understanding of economic principles on the Left. Just because you desperately wish something to be true does not make it economic fact.
Because they bring and spend cash in that state that would otherwise be spent elsewhere.
Prior to 2008, film and television spent around $2 mil in Michigan annually. After they passed their tax incentives that number ballooned to roughly 250 million.
Did that explain it to you?
It has nothing to do with whether or not the production needs “welfare.” Most of them don’t. The tax credits are there to ENCOURAGE and attract film companies to spend money in that state to generate revenue for the state.
There is only half of this story. Its true that the NJ economic development department authorized the credits and that Christie blocked it. BUT – the department was not empowered to give the tax credit in the first place. The state film commission is usuallly the one to give tax credits which they did for many years to companies like SVU – but when the last governor turned a blind eye to overspending in excess of the budget the tax credit program was one of the first to go – its why SVU pulled out of NJ. Jersey Shore tried to do an end run around the situation by going to the NJEDA that is empowered to give financing to companies that are starting up in NJ, for nonprofits and companies that want to expand community services in NJ. It was a huge stretch to say that Jersey Shore qualified to get any money from them according to their mandate.
Finally someone gets it right. Film commission had something like 10 million/yr tax credit program and previous admin drove it into the red. There was no money in the fund for credits. The economic development agency is not for film and tv tax credits. I do NOT like Christie but all he did was demand that the economic development funds be used for the stated purpose not to fill in for funds that were spent.
Christie has proved, yet again, that he is a moron. Pulling the tax credit will likely most effect local workers employed by the production. It was also act as a major deterrent for future productions to film in New Jersey.
Doesn’t Christie and the residents of NJ realize Jersey Shore is good for the economy? It boosts tourism. Idiots.
I enjoy watching the Jersey Shore. Even if I didn’t, I’d still think that it was completely wrong for Christie to cancel the tax credit. All this will do is make productions think twice whether they want to film a show/movie in NJ or not.
0% of 0 is……..
As a native New Jerseyan and Italian-American, I just want to say that I am more offended by Christie than anything I’ve seen on the show (including Deena dancing without underwear. Gross!) What an idiot.
MTV has a long history of bringing many bucks into Seaside, going back to the 90′s,when they would have their summer “Beach House” there all season.
If not for MTV & their big checkbook & deep pockets, Seaside would have gone the way of Asbury Park. $420 grand is a drop in the bucket compared to the revenue it brought into a fading & seasonal economy.
I always find it funny that liberal entertainment industry sorts are all for paying lower taxes FOR THEMSELVES when it comes to producing great works of art that enrich the public like “Jersey Shore”; yet lack the intelligence or ability to see that perhaps other individuals would prefer to pay less in tax themselves.
Then they’ll say, “well this tax credit helps bring jobs to people that need it…” as if lower taxes in other industries won’t allow those industries to hire more workers.
The reality is that the tax credit savings will go up the nose of some fat, greedy Hollywood executive or go into the pocket of their ex-wife. The $400,000 of lost tax revenue I’m sure could have helped impoverished people in the state of New Jersey, just like all of the money going to Vancouver, Louisiana etc. could have benefited the state of California, which is in desperate need of any revenue!
all it means is more season of jersey shore going to miami or italy. the tax break is there to get productions to come to the state.
