EXCLUSIVE: Justin Timberlake has signed on to star in the feature Spinning Gold, a biopic of famous 1970s record producer Neil Bogart, co-founder of Casablanca Records. Timberlake will also make his debut as a feature producer on the movie, which hails from Boardwalk Films, a division of indie media company Boardwalk Entertainment Group recently launched by Bogart’s sons — writer-producer-director Timothy Scott Bogart and songwriter and music publisher Evan “Kidd” Bogart — as well as TV producer Gary Randall. The three will produce Spinning Gold with Timberlake, with the actor-singer’s manager Rick Yorn executive producing.
The film, written by Tim Bogart, tells the rags-to-riches story of Neil Bogart, a dirt-poor Jewish kid from Brooklyn who went on to become a multimillionaire and help define 1970s pop culture with his Casablanca label that launched the careers of such superstars as KISS, Parliament, Donna Summer, and The Village People. “This is saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the ’60s and ’70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking,” said Tim Bogart, noting that Spinning Gold has been “literally three decades in the making.” The main issue had been finding an actor who would embody Bogart. Neil Bogart died of cancer in 1982 at age 39, so “we needed an young actor who can carry this picture,” Tim Bogart said. Someone suggested Timberlake, and the producers set up a meeting with him. “When Justin walked into the room, that was the moment I had been waiting for 29 years,” Tim Bogart said. “He has the exact same energy as my father, the same glimmer in his eye.” The movie will be independently financed but with a major studio-size budget, Tim Bogart said. Talks are underway with potential directors, and production is targeted to begin before the end of 2012. Additionally, Boardwalk Records plans to produce an album in conjunction with the movie.

This seems like this should have been a TV movie rather than a feature. I get wanting to pay homage to your dad and all, but I don’t think the public’s been begging for a Neil Bogart film.
Maybe I’m wrong.
Either way if done correctly it will work….No one had to remember Abe Lincoln to do a great movie about him…the music will carry it thru and it will work as a tv movie or movie…its not about the mans life story…its about the music, and the spirit…. and an era that is long gone…in reality the Neil Bogart story is not only the story of Casablanca…in the scheme of things the Buddah Records part of his life was a longer time…..
The Casablanca records story is a great one; big question: will this bring disco back? One can only dream…
I just wanna know who’ll play Donna Summer?
Former Destiny’s Child member, and recent solo artist Kelly Rowland would be perfect as Donna Summer. During the last couple of years, the resemblance between Kelly and Donna has been so striking.
I want to know who will play Donna Summer too.
Still need to cast Peter Guber. My choice is Tim Allen. Any other suggestions?
Isn’t that role going to Andy Samberg?
I am very excited to see this, the Bogart Family is very talented and they give everything 110%. Great move for this company by signing on Timberlake. Kudos all around!
Justin Timberlake is a great Casting choice ! This is a great story and I can not wait to hear the Soundtrack ! My Dad worked for Casablanca in New York and I grew up around the Casablanca office . CONGRATS
stop your average moviegoer on the street and ask him who Neil Bogart is…
James Cameron better make sure Avatar 2 doesn’t open anywhere near this one.
But don’t they know who Donna Summer, Kiss, Parliament and Village People are as well as Casablanca Records. Does anyone know Bob Fosse or Henry Hill…its a great story Fred. You obviously haven’t heard all of the stories.
Boardwalk- change this absolutely terrible title. Is this a movie about Rumplestiltskin? America is in a recession, it’s rags to riches- don’t sell us on the riches you idiots. This will bomb at the BO.
SPINNING GOLD! It’s a double-meaning! Fantastic!
$5 says this movie never gets made. It reminds me of the pitch for STUDIO 54.
Love the title!
I’m glad to hear this after it seemed that Justin Timberlake had sadly stopped doing films by the looks of it with only ‘In Time’ left to be released and no other film projects because everyone is hounding him about why he’s doing movies instead of music.
I want Justin Timberlake to keep doing movies rather than resuming his music career.
Who’s going to play David Putnam ???? I worked at Cassablanca as an editor when things where really cooking. Neil was a force of nature who also took care of his family, close, extended, etc. And who can forget upstairs at Carlos and Charlie’s???
Carlos ‘n’ Charlie’s was the best! (It was sad to see it destroyed.)
Kudos to whomever found the photo of Justin Timberlake smiling with the same expression on his face as Neil Bogart.
Donna Summer’s story about her first introduction to Bogart is worthy of the film alone.
There was a lot of nudity and cocaine and running down the halls.

Who will play SCOTT SHANNON.
I was around back there and believe me, there’s enough grist for the film … bolivian grist, if you know what I mean.
The story is great … I hope the script does it justice! Larry Harris’ book on the Casablanca project is must reading – one of the greats!
Hooray!
Hey, Timberlake looks Jewish – great casting. Can’t wait to hear his New York Jewish accent. And Gene Simmons needs to make a cameo as a washed up rock star. This is going to be an awesome movie!
When are we going to understand that there is very little potential in Timberlake becoming any kind of actor worth seeing? Between the hair, skinny legs and smugness I find him annoying on many levels. Am I on an island here? Ugh.
Giorgio Moroder cameo, please!
YES!!!!! And Donna too!
Casablanca/ LA was happnin’
I was an industry kid of Casablanca. It was a trip seeing Kiss/ Donna Summer/ ETC.
Listening to disco, roller skating and watching Solid Gold…
Going to backstage KISS parties and trying to figure out who was who(they wore no makeup backstage)
I was blessed to see blacks/ whites in the industry get together through music. No racism. It was special.
For the kids it was a ton of fun growing up in that environment(I was protected from the drugs.)
Anyway some say by 1980 the glory days of LA were over. In many ways I agree. Capture LA and the seventies, that music/ that feel- it was quite a time…
PS Timberlake is a pro. He will nail it. I don’t remember Mr. Bogart that well but I know his story/ Casablanca’s needs to be told.

Sounds promising. Let’s just hope things don’t get sugar-coated since it’s written from a family members p.o.v. And yeah, who gets to play Donna Summer, a combination of looks, talent, with an INCREDIBLE voice? It would be nice to see Justin and Beyonce (post-pregnancy) on screen even though she doesn’t match necessarily up in the ‘voice’ department. But Donna Summer was definitely on the Beyonce level back in the day in terms of popularity. Justin is a good little actor based on his SNL appearances alone. And Casabalanca Records was a trip from what I’ve read. Donna and Gene Simmons in a cameo for sure. Spin it!!!
Who will play Bill Aucoin??
Justin Timberlake needs to stop acting. Great singer, bad actor.
I admit I don’t recall the name Neil Bogart but as soon as I read the names, Casablanca Records, KISS, Village People, Donna Summer (why can’t Donna Summer play Donna Summer?) that certainly caught my attention. I would love to see a movie about him, how he became what he did coming from nothing, etc… He died so young!!
I adore Justin and I enjoy his acting. His comedy.. He is so funny!! I hope all goes well and the movie makes it to the theaters. I’m just a mom, but I was a teen during that particular era. I love Disco Music and dance. Bands had horn sections. Guys did not sag their pants! Remember Angel Flights? Don’t we all still know the arm movements for, YMCA and sing along with it? So, as somebody who is not familiar with the name, this article sure got me interested in Neil!!!!
this is an oscar winning role here. Bogart and his guys at Casablanca made the Boogie Nights people look like the Brady Bunch.
There was a rumor Beyonce was going to reprise Donna Summer’s role in a remake of Thank God It’s Friday. It would’ve been perfectly ok for Beyonce to have done that, and sing “Last Dance” in her own style. But I wouldn’t want her to play Donna Summer in this unless she lipsynched, she couldn’t sound enough like Donna. They should just look for a good actress with similar looks, and have her lipsynch. It’s too bad Donna’s daughter Brooklyn Sudano couldn’t play the part. She’s an actress, but she’s biracial and too light-skinned.
I’m so proud of my nephews Tim and Evan for doing this movie about my brother, Neil Bogart. As his sister, I know he was an incredible genius and human being, so talented. Since he was a young boy he was always doing something to further himself. He was a professional in all areas: singing, dancing, musician, acting, modeling, etc. He went to Julliard School, which you know you have to have talent in order to be accepted. He was a brilliant thinker – especially for the future. He was a remarkable brother, son, and father. He brought life and excitement to the music industry. This should be a GREAT movie for all to see. I know the music will be great too.
I can still remember the 1975 kiss show at the Beacon theater when my Uncle introduced my family to his partner Neil. and my mother saying that they have both lost their marbles after finding out that Bill charged ten thousand to his American express card and Neil had mortgaged his home. It was probably one of the most fantastic shows that I got to see. I’m sure that Tim and Even will do a wonderful job on this and I hope Joyce is doing well.. Can’t wait to see the movie.
I am Neils cousin and totally agree with Bonnie. We all grew up together and Neil was one terrific guy. His story is worth knowing about. Without him there might not have been a Donna Summers, Kiss, Village People etc. He had so much talent and it was very sad loosing him at such a young age. I know his sons will do him justice.
Isn’t this movie based on the awesome book “And Party Every Day” by Larry Harris
Justin Timberlake how can he play this roll he wasn’t even old enough to even know what really went down back in the 1970′s & Kelly Rowlands come on really neither was she.
