EXCLUSIVE: Justin Timberlake has signed on to star in the feature Spinning Gold, a biopic of famous 1970s record producer Neil Bogart, co-founder of Casablanca Records. Timberlake will also make his debut as a feature producer on the movie, which hails from Boardwalk Films, a division of indie media company Boardwalk Entertainment Group recently launched by Bogart’s sons — writer-producer-director Timothy Scott Bogart and songwriter and music publisher Evan “Kidd” Bogart — as well as TV producer Gary Randall. The three will produce Spinning Gold with Timberlake, with the actor-singer’s manager Rick Yorn executive producing.
The film, written by Tim Bogart, tells the rags-to-riches story of Neil Bogart, a dirt-poor Jewish kid from Brooklyn who went on to become a multimillionaire and help define 1970s pop culture with his Casablanca label that launched the careers of such superstars as KISS, Parliament, Donna Summer, and The Village People. “This is saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the ’60s and ’70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking,” said Tim Bogart, noting that Spinning Gold has been “literally three decades in the making.” The main issue had been finding an actor who would embody Bogart. Neil Bogart died of cancer in 1982 at age 39, so “we needed an young actor who can carry this picture,” Tim Bogart said. Someone suggested Timberlake, and the producers set up a meeting with him. “When Justin walked into the room, that was the moment I had been waiting for 29 years,” Tim Bogart said. “He has the exact same energy as my father, the same glimmer in his eye.” The movie will be independently financed but with a major studio-size budget, Tim Bogart said. Talks are underway with potential directors, and production is targeted to begin before the end of 2012. Additionally, Boardwalk Records plans to produce an album in conjunction with the movie.

Sorry BUT you are dead wrong! You obviously don’t know who NB was and how he changed the music industry. If studio 54 can be made into a movie. THIS certainly will be massive! Kiss, Donna Summer & Village people to name a few who shaped what music is today. Especially Donna. Much success to this film. I hope the producers are smart enough to get these acts to come up with NEW material for the film.
I agree with you 100% I really hope this is a major hit for everyone involved. Pass this on please! Have the boys get Donna, Kiss and Village people to work on some new material for the film. Would be awesome!!!!! Especially Donna since she and Evan seem to be close:) much love to you and your family:) Xman
I am not the biggest Timberlake fan, but he would bring enough popularity to make it a great movie. And as the others before me have said, WHO WILL PORTRAY DONNA SUMMER? Beyonce would be good BUT ONLY IF SHE LIPSYNCED. She did an excellent job in Cadillac Records but her vocals was no where near comparable to Etta James. Remeber her semi-remake of Love to Love You Baby? It did not come near the vocal talent of Donna’s version. Donna’s voice is one of a kind, like all the other great divas.
I have been impressed by the story of Neil Bogart ever since I bought my first Donna Summer album in 1975.
The two of them togther with Gorgio Moroder changed the future of music forever.
This is a story that must be told.
As for Ms Summer, it will be difficult to cast such a unique and talented individual. I would hope that they would lypsink her voice as there is no one that can capture the drama and intensity that she had and still has.
She is a true super star.
Can’t wait for this to be made!
Oh My! I hope it gets made and I hope it is an emotional roller coaster of a movie. I hope they don’t go cheap and make a joke of the music and his contribution to the music industry. What they do with Donna’s role is pivotal. She is so talented and was the Queen of Cassablanca. Hope she does contribute the theme song and several new tunes for the movies. Could be Academy her second Academy Award winning song like Last Dance was to TGIF. I would love to see Donna make it back to the mainstream. So many overlook her as one of the greatest vocalists of the century.
Our band Pendragon was in final talks for contract after Stallion, which was our predecessor for the great Casablanca label. We toasted many libations to your dad after hearing our good news, only to be jilted because of Neil’s failing health… I will be looking forward to seeing the movie, and feeling a certain closeness to the Bogart legacy. Tom Lalo,
P.S. Good luck Tim
I agree with you onthe Buddah years.AND…..What about his Cameo Records years. It does seem the writer is missing some history,on this project.
It does seem a TV Movie would have better.
I lived next to Neil and I wouln’t consider it ” Dirt Poor “. But I guess it makes for a good story.
Growing in Brooklyn, I was honored to have known Neil’s parents as they ran a foster home next door to me. Ruth and Al. I remember them well. They shared their love with the children who lived in the home and were certainly proud of Neil.
Best of luck with the pic. It deserves to be made
I too am exited to know who will play the part of Donna Summer who had a great part of the Casablanca Records and will bring a big audience just by her name.
