EXCLUSIVE: Kevin Costner has dropped out of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, an exit I’m told is due to a combination of scheduling and personal reasons. Costner had agreed to play the supporting role of Ace Woody in the Sergio Leone-style Spaghetti Western. The problem was it would have tied up about two months of his schedule even though he’s not in that many scenes. Costner is playing Pa Kent in the Superman reboot Man of Steel, and doing the miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys for History (which he’s also producing) and it was a bit much. It’s too bad, because the role would have been a real departure for an actor who has mostly played good guys. Costner was going to play Woody, a humorless and sadistic trainer of the male fighting slaves who entertain the white patrons of Candyland, a hellhole that also used female slaves as prostitutes. Candyland is the club and ranch owned by Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and Ace Woody is the one who pits the “mandingo” fighters against one another, and who has little qualms about mistreating and even killing the slaves who don’t measure up. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson star, with Foxx playing the title character, a slave-turned-bounty hunter who must take on those villains to free his slave wife. Tarantino is still testing actresses for that role, though Kerry Washington’s name has been in the mix. The Weinstein Company will put the picture into production in November, with Sony Pictures aboard for foreign.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Wonder if Quentin’s muse MICHAEL PARKS could be an interesting choice for this role?!?!
Parks would be good. Harrison Ford would be better.
Talk about against type.
if harrison ford then you might as well throw i denzel washington, tom cruise and the rest of the hollywood a-list actors.
keep it authentic…tarantino already has jackson-foxx-waltz…that’s enough.
what a shame was really looking forward to Costner playing a heavy under QT-
I am pretty sure he will be kicking himself over this decision when both of these project tank.
A Zack Snyder directed/Christopher Nolan produced Superman film isn’t going to tank. I’m sure Goyer’s script will, but financially the movie will do well.
I’ll give you Nolan, but what gives you the impression that Snyder can’t tank? Every single one of his movies since 300 has done progressively worse. He’s a one trick pony and that’ll become more than evident with Superman.
Sure it will! Just like the Zach Snyder-directed Sucker Punch which cost $82m + $50p&a, and earned $36m domestically (not even breaking even worldwide at only $90m).
Or maybe it’ll do gangbuster business like his awesome Watchmen film, which cost $130m to make plus another $100m to advertise, and only made $185m worldwide.
Sorry, but with Goyer on board, the script is sure to be ho-hum, and it’s a ho-hum character to begin with, and the last time someone made one of those movies (the execrable Superman Returns), it didn’t even cover its production & p&a costs, despite having Bryan Singer as a director.
This is a dull character. No one really has any strong emotional attachment to him. He’s being played by a British actor. It’s being directed by one of the worst directors working (pretty visuals aren’t directing, as several of his previous employers have discovered). This Superman movie is going to suck AND fail.
Who cares. Costner hasn’t made a good movie since…..um, wait, gotta think about this one….wow…um….ok, drawing a blank.
Jealous much, Bill…lol?
Dances with Wolves? Seven Oscars…
I’ll do it.
this concept is asburd. who cares? i still can’t believe how blindly this industry bows down to tarantino. for all of you who like this script, do you honestly think you would have gotten past page 5 if you had no idea who the writer was? this is a disgusting idea.
I guess capitalization is overrated too? You’re so hip!
Tarantino obviously has enslaved hollywood far too long.
While I love QT… I have to agree. Having read the script it’s hard to believe anyone would have read much past the first 20 pages had it not had his name on it (much less have financed it). MAN that’s a weird script and not in a good way. It’s repetitive, too slow at some points, seriously violent and just plain dumb at other points (I won’t fault him for the myriad typos seeing how he’s Dyslexic)… That said… the script does have some good moments too, of course some great dialogue and this being QT, I have a feeling he’ll carve a good film out of this rambling mess of a screenplay. He’s just that kinda’ guy.
On a different note… there are a lot of nekked ladies in it… how ’bout some nekked Leo or Jamie! I’ll buy a ticket for that!
Good for you! Someone finally writes the truth about this Tarantino movie. It’s the worst type of exploitation movie, that will be spun as a legitimate catalyst for discussion of race relations in the US. It’s disgusting! Those actors should be ashamed of themselves.
You might say Tarantino makes “exploitation movies” but it’s a type of movie that needs to be filled in the market of film. If he wasn’t doing it, someone else would and right now he is at the top of the game, because he practically revived the genre. Basically, you are saying that his type of movies should not be made because they are exploitative to …? If his movies hurt or cause harm to people or society then he should definitely stop making movies, but right now, it’s mostly creating jobs, making him rich, and entertaining a lot of people. SO, if you Haters want him to stop making movies all you have to do is get all those people who watch his movies to stop, and you would have succeeded – no more Tarantino Movies. Instead, there will be some other guy, named, “Quentin Florentino”, or something, making “exploitation movies”.
I read the script. He could dress up in drag and call himself Quentina Tarantula and I would STILL WATCH his movies. No one else is making the movies or touching the subject matter he touches in such a poignant and thought provoking way. It’s genius and disturbing and disturbingly genius. And for those who think the violence is too much… if your history books were a bit more accurate, you would understand exactly how much violence took place in this country perpetrated against slaves and the indigenous population now known as Native Americans. This role will be recast and production will go on.
I read the script as well. Kudos and respect to Costner for showing some class and a discriminating palate. He just moved up a big notch in my book. As for Samuel Jackson we can hardly be surprised, but shame on Jamie Foxx for accepting this role; way to perpetuate stereotypes of your people to no good end, man. It’s not even a good script; there’s not a single artistically redeeming thing about it. I honestly expected more from you, you moneygrubbing asslicking sellout. Fuck you.
“your people”???
Jamie’s not selling out; he’s simply telling a story and playing a part. This is Hollywood – if we were so concerned about black people and truth in diversity, we would showcase black people and other people of color in more TV shows and films.
So Quentin T. is being true to himself and his own, albeit, twisted as f*ck and hilarious vision, and all of a sudden, this discourse has become a referendum on race. Oh please!!
Since you’re so concerned Jay about the state of black folks in Hollywood, let’s see what you do about it and my guess is not a damn thing except talk sh*t.
How can a non-black person qualify the notion of whether or not Foxx is selling out? Assuming that you, Anonymous, are not black, you can’t possibly understand what’s at stake because you’re not black; using your imagination isn’t equivalent to being black, by the way, in case you didn’t get the memo, or in case you’re Tarantino. You’re probably one of the few idiotic caucasian males I heard had the nerve to “dress up” as Sgt. Osirus on Halloween, though I bet you had more sense than to walk into a party full of black folks (or intelligent white folks, for that matter) dressed like that. Assuming, on the other hand, that you are black, it suffices to merely to observe that you are an idiot.
Stereotypes? “Your people?” Wow. Next you’ll be joining Michelle Bachmann in the train of thought that our country’s forefathers ‘worked tirelessly until slavery was no more.’ SMH
I am black, you dizzy mf.
So did you read the script? Because it sounds like you know what happens in it based only on the concept. Pretty impressive!
Guy Pearce would be a nice replacement.
I hope Django tanks big time.
I read this story as Quentin Tarantino is ripping off Sergio Leone now.
Bill,
Mr Brooks was his last good one!
Yeah, can’t wait for a good slave movie. We haven’t had one of them for a long time (GLORY? AMISTAD? POSSE? WILD, WILD WEST?). Also, with Tarantino’s love of the “N” word and Sam Jackson’s masterful use of the “N” word, I can’t wait for the dialog from this script! Q will throw the N word around like a gangsta rapper at a BOONDOCKS reunion!
Someone, please… Stop Tarantino before he throws up more garbage on the screen and calls it art!
Was it Picasso who said that artists conspire with rich people to make everyone else feel stupid? Guess you got your Tarantino crowd right there.
Having just seen Parks in RED STATE, I agree he’d be sensational in the part.
Corbin Bernsen would rock as Ace Woody. He played an evil racist in 1995′s Tales From The Hood.
Disgusting, repulsive, boring, and stupid. With fabulous sums of money to spend and many talented people needing work, why is he aiming so low? This is a work he can be proud of?
SOO looking forward to this movie. Go Django!
Daniel Day Lewis or Liam Neeson…Duh.
Daniel Day Lewis or Liam Neeson?? That’s lazy casting…how many movies will DDL be the bad guy? If Michael Fassbender weren’t so busy these days he’d be perfect.
For all the people against the making of this movie…did you say no to all the Nazi movies out there? No. This is history that should be told, not just Israeli or Italian or cowboys and freakin Indians.
Josh Brolin.
Too bad about Costner. Been hoping the Foxxhole would drop out.
YOU nailed it! He is too overexposed for that particular role; what COULDA SHOULDA WOULDA been great is that guy who eats the pastrami sandwich (commercial) or that guy who does the Loews commercial in short an unknown UP AND COMER! Right? Give new faces a break. Besides, I would love to see Foxx ‘DISGUISED’ and I know just the role but it’s hush hush for now. NEW FACES! COME ON! bb
The jailhouse crowd is waiting breathlessly for movie night.
Even if it miraculously ends up becoming QT’s best film of all time, It’ll still tank at the Box Office simply because people will be too uncomfortable to see it in a theatre. Sure maybe not in Japan or Asia, but certainly in the US. You can bet too there’s going to be serious protests as well.
That’s the same argument that was given for Roots in 1976 in a “television” setting vs. film. Watch the commentary on the dvd set if you dare. It’s quite enlightening. Growth is often uncomfortable.
So I guess it’s cool to hate on Tarantino, now. Imo, INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS put QT in a new stratosphere, the rarified air of the best directors working today. To my mind, he’s in the top three.
Also, I think Costner turned it down cause he balked about grabbing Jamie Foxx’s balls (which Ace Woody does in the script).
One of the most brilliant scripts I have ever read. What’s with the people on here who don’t like it?
Hint: jealous, frustrated wannabees
“Whats with people on here” (full stop)
I am assuming from most of the negative comments here that life and art are in your (very jaded) eyes no longer allowed to imitate each other. Hollywood with its constant mash-ups and re-boots still gets a kick in the nuts when someone has the balls (and Tarantino has em in droves) to go for some original film making. Bunch of torn faced solo symphony playing trolls
Have a nice day though!
I agree. The script is great. Tarantino is brilliant at genre twisting and revenge fantasy. I understand Will Smith dropping out – he has a personal brand to protect. However, Kevin Costner is just walking away from an opportunity to show his range and revive his career. He could have been an iconic supporting good guy (Pah Kent) and an iconic supporting bad guy (Ace Woody) in the same year.
I guess he would rather make some crappy mini series High School English teachers are going to make a homework assignment.
Have fun in Mediocreville you P.C. wimp.
Oh and BTW – Black Americans are going to love this movie – they’re not as precious as you treat them. Just like Germans loved Inglorious Basterds.
It is great! We didn’t discuss it on the show, but could have. I simply advised writers to read it. It’s totally compelling and has MORE THAN A PAGE by PAGE YANK in terms of narrative tug, in short: it’s EASY to see it. And Blacks WILL love this film. I say GIVE US MORE COLOR on the screen: I want to see Hispanics, Blacks, Indians, East Indians, you name it; give me COLOR! it makes a huge difference and it captures the beauty that is out there. BB
We ARE going to love this movie. We voted on it last night at the BIG Meeting for Black Americans.
“Oh and BTW – Black Americans are going to love this movie – they’re not as precious as you treat them. Just like Germans loved Inglorious Basterds.”
Oh, word, because I am a “Black American” (?) and I hate this effing project. It’s gross how “White Americans” (?) are getting a hard on over this slave western. SIDE EYE.
@Gross: OH SHUT UP WITH THAT SHIT!
Blacks (like myself) already love it! No not the multiple use of the N-word (geez QT, like for real?), but the way he dared to tell a piece of history that even Spike Lee’s ass wouldn’t do.
So go sit down somewhere because you aren’t speaking for blacks, honey.
Ted B., I love folks like you that find such boldness in the shadows of online posting, but would never be so bold in real life – real life being defined as ever making such remarks to a black person’s face. And since you think you know black folks so well, please note that some of us will like it and some of us won’t and some folks won’t even see it. and do you know why my truly ignorant friend, because we are not monolithic.
Quentin does the whole revenge fantasy thing quite well – Germans and Jews alike loved his “retelling” of Hitler’s demise. After all, this is Hollywood where white women have been playing Cleopatra from the beginning of time until right now (cue Angelina), so obviously dramatic license has its place in this town.
Joy Jones, you may accept your Oscar now. I applaud you and will clap for you as you grace the stage with your beauty, poise and well written (and memorized) speech.
Babz, as Joy pointed out, we are certainly not a monolithic people. No one is. Our cry for more enlightening, more diverse films comes from a desire to see the versatility of African-Americans in an industry and through an art form we hold dearly. I think the script is brilliant and I can’t wait to see it. I know 10 African-Americans who will agree with me and 10 African-Americans who will disagree with me. Thank you, Tarantino for giving us a choice.
Wow Joy Jones. Usually when I’m insulted it isn’t followed up with – but I agree with you. Will every single black persion love this movie – NO. Will the majority of Black American audiences like this movie – YES.
Here’s why…
It acknowledges a painful but complicated past with a sense of humor. The Sergio Leone style narrative allows you to laugh treating it as some over the top movie you catch on late night TV. Its almost 3 different westerns in one movie.
Its a script that doesn’t play down to the audience – it treats the audience as a sophisticated media consumer in on the joke. I feel that Black American youth culture – particularly hip hop culture is so ahead of the curve. Wu-tang was doing this in the 90s with Kung Fu movies, hip hop has been doing this for decades.
Quentin is screenwriter as DJ. He has faith that audiences with recognize his influences and understand his intentions behind his recombinations of genre, style, and characterization.
Why do I think this movie will do well with black audiences – because its complex and smart. I guess thats the subtle racism of High Expectations. So sue me.
By the way Cleopatra was greek – look it up. You should take offense at Tyler Perry movies, not Liz Taylor.
Right Ted! And I’m one of ‘em!
No big loss. Tarantino is better off without him. Aside from being a control freak, and a one note actor with little to no respect for others, he’s the kiss of death for any film he’s in, as he’s been cursed after cutting an old East Indian man’s scenes out of ‘Water World,’ years ago after the old man got hurt on set during the filming of the movie and died two years later from recurrent pneumonia as a result of his injuries and Kostner never called the family to give his condolences or acknowledge the old man’s contribution to the film, even after Kostner was notified of the old man’s passing.
The old man’s son, who comes from a long line of psychics and is related to a famous New Orleans voodoo queen from the 1800′s, as I understand it, put a curse on Kostner that he’d never have another hit film again and hasn’t ever since.
True story as told to me by the old man’s son.
Now go hire Kurt Russell instead.
You’re my hero.
I can’t believe people are in such a tizzy over a Tarantino film. For chrissake, it’s Tarantino! The man practically owns the exploitation genre now.
Man what a bunch of jealous haters!
You folks up in this TB who think you’re hot stuff and QT’s a hack, sign your real names and slap a link to your imdb credits to it. Unless you have a mantle full of hardware and critical acclaim and the respect of your peers – and the ability to draw an actor like Leonardo DiCaprio to play one of the most despicable bad guys ever written (note I said written, as it’s not on-screen yet), you just need to STFU.
