EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime will not be ordering a second season of The Protector, the freshman drama starring Ally Walker as single mother Gloria Shepherd, who juggles her demanding personal and professional lives raising two children while working as a Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective. The Protector got off to a soft start in June, drawing 1.9 million viewers for its premiere and holding onto 50% of its Army Wives lead-in. It never picked up steam. The Protector was one of two new drama series Lifetime launched this summer. The second, Against the Wall, is still airing its freshman season.

No surprise here. The promotion of this show was terrible when it began in June. They ran promos only 2-4 weeks prior to launching, and the promo looked like it was filmed by a school kid. And to top it off, it was a terrible show!…But then again so are most police dramas on cable.
I think you mean crime procedurals are terrible and most of them are on broadcast. The modern procedural format in unwilling to go for depth, avoid the cliche. and explore new ideas.
As far as I can tell Justified, Southland, and The Closer are the three highest quality Crime Dramas you can find on all of TV and all three are on cable.
The pilot was okay but the few episodes I saw after that were blah! Nothing original. And it wasn’t set in NY it was set in LA.
I am so sorry to see The Protector is not getting another chance. There is so little to watch on t.v. anymore to lose another good show stinks. I was also hoping to see Patty Duke on it again.
Everything was so contrived. Ally Walker looked like she was trying to do a Mary McCormack meets Piper Perabo. Love AGAINST THE WALL and hope that sticks.
I too really love Against the Wall. I never have a chance to watch it on Lifetime on Sundays, but I do watch it every week on the website
All their stuff is too soft for me. I want to see something with some edge!
Not a surprise to me when they started airing the episodes @ 11 pm. I figured it was slated to go. I loved Ally in The Profiler and was really hoping this would last but to be honest, none of the episodes offered anything new or exciting. I’ll still dvr all the new episodes until they end but not broken over this show ending.
“All their stuff is too soft for me. I want to see something with some edge!”
Wrong network…
Not surprising. This was just a bad, poorly developed concept and waste of a talented actress in Ally Walker.
Completely agree with Joan…tuned in because I loved Ally in The Profiler and SOA, but this show was just terrible. Such a disappointment.
Honestly I thought Ally Walker could do much better than this. Good riddance to mediocre rubbish.
Too bad. I liked it. It wasn’t horrible and was kinda funny (Ala “The Closer”). I think if it had been promoted in a different way and allowed some time for people to find it, Lifetime could’ve had a successful series. Sometimes it just means that there’s too much drama on set for execs to even want to give it a chance.
I enjoyed the show, and thought the music was especially cool.
Lifetime doesn’t know how to protect or support a show. They are terrible at programming. They give up too fast. They can’t nurture a show at all. They have this one number attitude like it’s a movie.
Word of mouth on this show as excellent.
Army Wives had a huge promo on ABC after the big finale of Grey’s Anatomy. It had billboards and commercials for a month. That was due to the power of the Mark Gordon Company at that time not Lifetime.
So she quits SOA to play in this crap show and now will be unemployed forever unless her husband puts her in another show in FX? Good for her…
From the moment the geniuses at AETV decided to show what they thought of Lifetime’s schedule and threw on reruns of “Intervention” and “Pawn Stars” into their primetime and went head-on into even more awful reality there, I knew that most of Lifetime’s original slate was doomed. The promotion for this didn’t suggest police drama, but ‘wacky cop mother balances work and family’, so I never bothered to tune in. If it wasn’t for the crater they’d leave if they dared to cancel “Drop Dead Diva” at this point from fan reaction they’d be out of drama entirely at this point.
Have to agree with you Rebecca on lifetime giving up on shows too fast but not that they didn’t promote Army Wives. That was a series they produced, it wasn’t one that they purchased as a package and they did promote the heck out of it (as much as I HATE lifetime I know that to be true).
Plus you put any show on lifetime that has an independent woman as the lead and it doesn’t have a chance on that network. It’s had some great shows that they’ve canceled in the past and I’m sure they’ll continue to do it in the future. Their motto used to be: The Women’s Network. They wouldn’t know what women wanted if it bit them in the butt. They SUCK!!!
Too much crammed into Sunday nights so there was a lot of competition. But the main problem I had with The Protector was she mumbled so much it wasn’t worth the effort to watch and try to guess what she was saying. Many shows clutter the sound with ambient noise for authenticity, often characters try for a “neighborhood” accent but in this case she just mumbled.
Against The Wall is starting to get very good (more focused story line, stronger dialogue and a bit more action) and hopefully it will be picked up for another season. Lifetime should promote their shows on other channels (agreed).
This network is a mess. Now no decent actress will want to take a lead part there. They pass on good pilots and green-light poor ones like this.
I am very disappointed to learn that The Protector has been cancelled. I am a fan of Ally Walker and like the shows that offer a little humor(like The Closer). Against the Wall and Drop Dead Diva are two programs I enjoy so I do hope the network rethinks some of its advertising and offerings.
Have had two episodes in South Africa – will not be watching any more episodes – gave it the benefit of the doubt by trying to watch 2nd episode – BORING and not good acting from anyone!!!
