Following Fox’s decision in May to cancel America’s Most Wanted as a weekly series, relegating it to quarterly specials, the venerable crime-fighting franchise has found a new home on Lifetime. The female-centered cable network has picked up John Walsh’s series, which will launch its 25th season on Lifetime later this year. While AMW appears male-oriented, industry observers pointed out that it is actually female-skewing because of its wish-fulfillment element that justice will be served. In its 24 years on Fox, AMW has played a major role in the capture of more than 1,100 fugitives in the U.S. and 30 countries, including 17 on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List, and the rescue of 61 children and missing persons. “America’s Most Wanted is a seminal program that provides a very valuable service to both viewers and law enforcement agencies,” said Lifetime’s president and general manager Nancy Dubuc said. “For more than two decades John Walsh has been leading the fight against crime and it’s an honor to partner with him on bringing back this important show.”
Back in May, Fox brass explained their decision to drop AMW with the fact that the network was not making money on the series as its cost had gone up through the years. The series’ producers vowed to look for a new home right away, and now they have found one on Lifetime. “I’ve always believed there was something very special about America’s Most Wanted and that there should be a home for it on television, and I couldn’t be happier to now be able bring it back on Lifetime,” said Walsh. “We’ve often been called the court of last resort … now we are back in the game and ready to saddle up for another season to get justice for victims and put dangerous criminals behind bars.” This month at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Walsh is set to receive the Governors Award, which “salutes an individual, company or organization that has made a substantial impact and demonstrated the extraordinary use of television.”

Lifetime? Didn’t see that one coming. But good for the show. Should be interesting to see how this effects the ratings…
I MUST AGREE WITH TOMMY ABOUT LIFETIME PICKING UP AMERICA MOST WANTED. IT WAS A GREAT SHOW THAT SHOULDN’T BE CANCELED. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED WHEN FOX BOSSES SEE WHAT KIND OF RATING THE SHOW WILL GET. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Yeah, I was surprised too.. I thought that TruTV was the natural choice.
I am already a big fan of Lifetime BUT we are HUGE fans of “America’s Most Wanted”!! For as long as I can remember we have planned our Saturday night’s around AMW. If we HAD to be somewhere else we would record it but it had to be something really important to take us away from home on Saturday evening! I was shocked to hear that FOX had dropped it from their lineup, especially for the trash/garbage they replaced it for, we would not waste our electricity on that trash/garbage! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU LIFETIME TV for picking up ‘AMERICA’S MOST WANTED’ THE BEST OF TV!
Our daughter is grown now, but we always would have her watch it with us to show her that their are bad guys in the world and that eventually the ‘bad guy’ always gets arrested and goes to jail in the end.
Thank you Mr. Walsh for helping, so many children and other American’s you are a good man! Your son Adam, would be so proud!
Bless you!
Mary, a citizen that believes that ALL bad guys should pay!
I would also think tru would have taken it but no matter I am so very happy it’ll be back, I have been watching it since it 1st came on
Hurray. I am not a loyal viewer however I am glad it is returning. I am for anything that helps bring justice to crime victims!
Thank-you lifetime, on picking up AMW, I have been watching it for 20 years, its a great show. Mr. Walsh is great as host of the show, and a true tribute to Adam, may he rest in peace.
This is AWESOME news.I will be watching!!!!!!
It’s all good that John Walsh’s show continue… good for all of us! His work is beyond the pale! However, what the heck does this say about Lifetime. What a disastrous place for them to be. Picking up cancelled Fox shows that have no business being on Lifetime except for the fact that Nancy Dubuc and Bob Sharenow are clueless about scripted and are looking for anything that pops a number for their ad sales people. This is one very confused ship for sure!
This is so great! I was pissed off when I saw that last episode and John Walsh said he would only be coming back for “specials”. Now on the AMW website it says there will be a 2 hour special on Oct 29th. Will that still be on FOX and when will the new season start on Lifetime? I know not everyone has cable BUT at least it will be on the air again and for people w/out cable you can watch the episode on the website after it airs! I am so VERY happy for John Walsh, I watched AMW all the time and looked forward to it!
For those of you who are confounded by Lifetime picking up AMW, don’t be so surprised. Consider that this is the same channel where Unsolved Mysteries thrived in syndication for many years before going off the Spike. And just this year or last year, Lifetime picked up the rights to air Unsolved Mysteries once more. And there is news that Unsolved Mysteries will be airing newly produced episodes or so I’ve read. Lifetime seems to have a strategy going.
Be that as it may, this is far from the kind of programming Lifetime’s audience would be interested in. More than likely Lifetime is trying to shed its women-only skin and go for a more general interest crowd. Not sure that’s in their best interest.
Like what meanmrmustard pointed out below, shows like Unsolved Mysteries and America’s Most Wanted /are/ what Lifetime’s core audience is interested in as far as programming. Unless you have any data to the contrary?
I’m glad the show got picked up. Fox should have never canceled it. This should have been picked up by PBS. At lease finally our tax dollars would goto a good cause
So “law-and-order-uber-alles” Fox cancelled a show that was proven to help law enforcement and aid public safety–all because it wasn’t making enough money? Hypocrites. Rupert Murdoch and his vile empire can’t go down fast enough.
Actually, AC, if you look at how non-fiction oriented crime networks such as ID are faring with women 18-49, it’s not such a weird idea at all. It could be quite a shrewd move.
Between the women in peril flicks and AMW Lifetime is creating generations of agrophobics who stay home and watch Lifetime. Genius!
Glad to see AMW get a reprieve.
Fox i sfoolish for canceling it…I’ll definitely watch it on Lifetime.
I was also schocked that FOX cancelled this show, again. Don’t they realize that this a valuable show that helps, it should not be about costs, etc. I have been watching this show forever. I’m glad Lifetime grabbed this one. Can’t wait so bring it back asap!
i’m already a big fan of lifetime brcause i’m also a fan of amw and once fox network canceled the show amw they lost all the rights to it 2 hour specials and any repeats screw fox network keep your stupid shows like the simpsons and x factor and the news and what ever you bring on this season your ratings are going to be down the drain you guys might of well file for bankruptcy right now because your ratings is going to be so low fox network wouldn’t have canceled amw.
THANK YOU Lifetime for picking up America’s Most Wanted. Our family has watched it every Saturday night for years. When FOX cancelled it, we stopped watching anything on that channel. We will be loyal watchers of AMW once again!!
I am looking forward to seeing AMW on lifetime. Lifetime is a quality network with quality programming. I certainly WON’T miss seeing it on fox..I won’t miss having to watch annoying commercials for American Idol or The Wanda Sykes Show.
So when does it start. I was wondering what was going on! Good for you lifetime, I have not watched anything on fox at the time either. That was something my husband and I planned our Sat with.
This is the best real life tevelison serious, that has ever came out for the Unied States, and for that matter the world, The channel fox missed out on the pulse of America, John Walsh has been the best person who with his staff, has brought many criminals to justice.. Thank You LMN for being faithful to the truth, you have given the US & The world more hope … Thank you for being so considerate to all of us who have been done wrong or who will do the right thing by your decison to bring on AMW.. to your channel..I missed AMW very much, I am humble to your station..
i’ve watched amw since it started so no the show needs to stay on & fox eat your heart out.
I am very happy to see lifetime pick up AMW as I think they do a very awesome thing for society. They seem to be able to add to what our valuable overworked and underpaid police officers do everyday. We are all on the same team and I think we need to use every resource in solving crimes to make America safer for family and everyone in the US.They need to stay on American TV from now on regardless of expense and profitability.
What on earth happened to America’s
Most Wanted? It was not on yesterday
at 9:00pm on Lifetime.Thank you.
Gloria J. Thompson
AMW should air 24 hours a day!!!!!!!
