EXCLUSIVE: Former latenight star Molly Shannon is heading to daytime. The Saturday Night Live alumna is joining CBS’ daytime talk show The Talk as a guest host for the month of September. When the show’s second season starts next Tuesday, Shannon will be sitting around the Talk table alongside returning hosts Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne and new addition Sheryl Underwood. Osbourne will be on tap for the start of the season but she is scheduled to take some time off in the fall, so Shannon may cross paths on the show with reality matriarch Kris Jenner who will be filling in for Osbourne. Shannon is a comedy actress like the 2 original Talk co-hosts, Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete, whose options were not renewed. But Shannon also has a strong live performance and improv background, having spent 6 years on SNL. And she fits into The Talk‘s theme of taking on current events from a mom’s perspective as she has 2 kids. Shannon, repped by Gersh and Framework, recently co-stared in the hit feature Bad Teacher and the musical Promises, Promises and did an arc on Glee. She also has a comedy project in the works at HBO.

Molly’s manager Steven Levy is a genius. He continues to steer his clients towards out of the box gigs which helps then grow their profiles in all media. Kudos.
Really? Good career move? An incoming call from a failing show opposite two train wreck hosts (Kris, Julie) isn’t really what I’d call a good career move.
& if Molly’s credited for saving it?
Answer: HUGE!
The talk will not be renewed beyond this year. Molly S career is just going down and down. Taking this gig just proves it.
BTW, when did Holly Robinson Peete get known for doing comedy? She did Hanaing with Mr Cooper but her other items are dramatic.
Lastly getting Shannon and Kris is just dumbing down the show. Hasselback would be the smart one of this group. To go in a different direction they should have gotten one of the TV daytime judges (not judge judy) like Marilyn Milian or Maria Lopes in addition a young up and coming person like Iliza Shlesinger or someone more established like Wanda Sykes would also help.
The two weakest links are the show producers/host which is why it will be not be around in Jan 2013.
I totally agree. They axed two out of three of the best hosts. And the other one, Sharon, will probably take herself out.
Molly Shannon is talented but she would be the only talented one on the panel. Sara Gilbert is the most boring cohost ever. Ditto, Julie Chen who offers nothing in the conversation other than her life is perfect and she and her husband never had a fight. Women can’t relate to Chen, a career woman who made it to the top by lying on her back. Plus, she is a woman who stabs her friends in the back. Holly, Leah and Sharon had the best chemistry and stuck their neck outs every day on that show. Molly Shannon is boarding a sinking ship.
Good performer – but a lousy career move on her part.
make it stop.
Bring back Holly & Leah! Get rid of Julie!
Uh, AJ, you forget who runs the network and which “Talk” panelist is married to him?
This.
Julie Chen is a perfectly fine, down the middle television personality. It’s not like she’s vetoing pilots and running roughshod over the network. Please. Get over it.
The Talk is finding it’s voice, but it will still be months before it really sings.
I agree. Bring back Holly and Leah. I’m done watching it!
bring them back i am stop watching, It is terrible and I was an avid watcher
Stopped watching this week. Thought maybe the regular host were just on vacation. Don’t know the black lady’s name, but this is not the show for her. She is too loud, can’t speak well and cheapens the show.Julie is tolerable but not as necessary as the other REGULAR host. The SATURDAY NIGH LIVE lady is great on SNL when she impersonates, but not here. As for Kris, fake like her daughters. What were you people thinking????????
…assume Molly drank Julie Chen’s KooL-Aide…if not…from someone who watched The Talk only once and had enough…Molly might actually be refreshing…
Molly has great energy.
Julie Chen…is neither here, nor there.
The TALK is a boring show!
I think adding Molly Shannon is a wonderful idea. I think it will really liven things up. She’s funny and won’t be annoying like some of the other panelists. This could really work.
Molly is too quirky for The Talk . I don’t see her as a good fit.
PREPARE TO FACE THE WRATH OF THE CHENBOT!!!
Love Molly Shannon and she should be one of the permanent hosts of this program. I agree with getting rid of that ChenBot, but as long as hubby is in control of the network, unfortunately, she’s going nowhere and Sara Gilbert is just absolutely boring and offers nothing to this trainwreck of a show. However, it’ll probably get canceled soon.
Lets keep on copying the view. Black Funny Woman (Shepherd) – Check…White Funny Woman (Behar)- Check ; “News woman” (Walters) – Check and on and on
Yes, and heaven help CBS if they do something stupid like start coloring the show brown by bringing on a trained professional Latina like Daisy Fuentes to replace Julie Chen. Because unlike Chen, Fuentes has the chops to lift The Talk off the ratings floor all by herself. (Kind of makes you wonder if Moonves doesn’t have his wife right where…)
Yeah, let’s keep CBS right up there with The View: 0 brown faces.
Then why haven’t we seen the has-been Daisy around if she’s so successful?
Because she is not married to a decision maker
Daisy’s may be out of the tv spotlight but she’s been successful in other ways by means of business, fashion, branding out she’s been part of Khol’s for years for example and it’s been very successful, she very comfortable there. It would be neat if she joined the talk show but I think she’s too gorgeous for that.
Daisey is now pregnant in her mid 40′s and also way to smart for the “new” The Talk…the Chenbot would fire Daisy for being too smart and too funny if she was on the at panel. Chenbot wants to be the only star and to control a panel of women who chat…oxymoron would’nt you say…well that is Julie Chen-Moonves!
The Talk is the most boring show ever to be on tv….
They need to pay big bucks and get some real talent…
I say, Julie is a complete bore, and Kris should helm the show….
Is Betty White next?
I love Molly Shannon as an actress. She’s interesting and unique. But this TALK show (which I admittedly have only seen a handful of times…) was underwhelming and dull. And the only two rays of light were Remini and Pette, who were more real than the others, quick witted and had had more life. Which I guess is why they were fired.
This show is digging it’s only grave quite slowly and the boss man won’t let it go until it’s far past dead because his wife is now clearly demanding who is and who isn’t a host.
Watch it fall off the radar this year. Because adding a Kardashian (to what, talk about her family which most of America has had enough of…) and black conservative comedianne (glad for her but it reeks of aren’t-we-being-controversial tokenism) isn’t going to help. And Molly will throw this into goofyland.
Kris Jenner is dumb as a rock! I guess this is the end cause I won’t be watching.
Molly is not good at conversation. She needs a script.
I’d like to see Mike and Molly host the show…at least we may see a bit of comedy on the show……add Chris Rock…Eddie Murphy, and Lady Ga Ga, people would watch the show just to see what she is wearing…
im gonna miss Leah!!!
I think what has happened is a huge mistake, if anyone should have gone it was Julie Chen, she stinks! I love Sharon Osborne and Holly and Leah were good also! I will not be watching the new season, its over for me!
Worst show ever on daytime….the only one that mattered was Leah Remimi…funny and smart..the rest are awful and the new group sounds really awful…Moonves should have the spouse doing news (local)..thats all shes good for….lol
CBS is getting desperate. Nothing against Molly Shannon loved her on SNL.Unfortunately, Molly is climbing aboard a sinking ship. CBS blew it when they got rid of Leah and Holly. I won’t be watching the show anymore.
I thought the show was funny and entertaining and they got alone well but I’m sure Leah and Holly who sat right next to Julie didn’t see this monkey wrench being thrown at them. That’s why for the last few shows Sara has been a nervous wreck because she knew what was happening. The only unfortunate thing is the ladies got too common with each other but from this point on if it were me I would tell Julie and Sara to lose my number. Those two together could rock daytime television.
I am looking forward to seeing Molly on The Middle playing Patricia Heatons sister.
Molly will help The Talk and I am sure it will be better than the Chew and the other awful ABC show that is coming on the afternoon schedule. As far as Sara Gilbert she is the most PC person on the Talk and that usually makes her boring she is so predictable,
she doesn’t need to talk you know what she will say.
Sara should do a week of doing every non pc thing in the world and loosen up. I think there is hope with her but since she is the producer I don’t think she has to worry if the others carry the show.
Who the hell is Sheryl Underwood????????
I love Molly. I’ve directed her. I can sit in a restaurant for hours and watch her hold the whole table in the palm of her hand. She is one of the funniest, with the weirdest sense of humor. Riveting. Irresistible. I’m so glad she’s in our lives again, regardless of the form. God bless you, Molly (and I mean that in a not-necessarily-religious way, just a way of sending you love.) You have a unique vision on what’s funny. Did I mention I love Molly? Oh, right, I did. She has truly genius moments. Can’t wait. Guess who I am?
Why you’re at it, say some prayers Molly survives that evil backstabber, Julie Chen. Molly is way too good to board this sinking ship. No matter how talented Molly is, the viewers are not going to be able to stomach Julie Chen anymore. Sara Gilbert is the most boring person ever to be on TV. I don’t care if she’s the producer or not, she should be behind the scenes, not in front of the camera. Obviously, CBS get rid of the wrong people. Poor Molly, I really like her, but hate Chen too much to watch the show anymore. Regardless, I love Molly, Sharon, Leah and Holly. THEY should all be on a talk show together ON ANOTHER NETWORK.
Molly Shannon is talented and hilarious. I wish her nothing but the best, but I hope she is prepared to kiss up to Julie Chen. That is the apparent requirement of the job. That and listening to the ice queen talk about her husband which is basically shoving the fact she is married to the boss in everyone’s face. Julie seems competitive with the other women and is under the deluded impression that her journalism background makes her opinions superior to the opinions of everyone else. Sara barely speaks and therefore makes little contribution to the show. With Holly gone and Sharon taking a break, the show looks like it is circling the drain.
