Former South African President Nelson Mandela’s family announced today that three of his grown grandchildren will star in a new reality TV show to air in early 2012. Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, and her younger sister Swati Dlamini, all grew up in the United States, but then returned to South Africa for business and family reasons. “This is about three women breaking away from the Mandela legacy to find their own feet,” said director Graeme Swanepoel. ”The show will be about our lives as young, black women… We’re not wearing ‘I’m a Mandela’ T-shirts,” Swati, granddaughter of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, told the news conference. “We’re definitely not the African Kardashians,” another of the soon-to-be-stars said. American producer Rick Leed was in Johannesburg today talking to reporters about the show. He’s the former president of Wind Dancer Production Group (Home Improvement) who created and exec-produced Dr. 90210. “It’s not going to detract from the dignity of Nelson Mandela,” Leed said. The trio of grown grandchildren told the media that the show would not feature their parents and grandparents. According to news reports, Dlamini-Manaway, 34, is the mother figure of the show with a 10-year-old son, a two-year-old daughter, and a third child due in January. She is involved in a family business, Mandela Dlamini Associates, and plans to launch a clothing line. Dlamini, 32, is a single mother getting back into the career world with plans to set up a foundation focused on the housing, education and medical sectors. Amuah, 27, has a law degree and an MBA and is in the luxury brands business.

Keeping up with the Mandelas.
So much for legacy.
More crap on TV. This proves that anyone and everyone will someday have thier own reality show.
I agree that this is probably not going to be a great show, but why do you think THIS show in particular proves that “anyone and everyone will someday have their own reality show”. What about TEEN MOM, JERSEY SHORE, REAL HOUSEWIVES OF (INSERT CITY)?
What is it about this show that made you come to that conclusion?
Comforting to know that AMericans don’t have the market corned on dumb-assed TV programming.
No, it won’t at all detract from his dignity….
God this sounds heinous. It’s got all the earmarks of super, mega trash including having a “clothing line” (the easiest high-profile, no-talent-required endeavor) running a “luxury business” (wtf?) and declaring they’re NOT the African Kardashians, loudly and often as if evoking the name of devil himself… the devil, no doubt, they encountered somewhere on a dusty crossroad outside Johannesburg.
I remember going with my parents to see Mr. Mandela speak at the L.A. Coliseum years ago when I was a kid and not long after he had been released from prison. There was this feeling of real hope for the world, you know, the air that things could change…. Well, yeah, they changed but I’m sure he could have no idea then that his progeny would be the manifestation of the worst of those cultural changes.
Well, rich trash comes in all colors and has no international boundaries.
They’ll be moving back to America soon when their country collapses due to black rule. It’s already almost like Zimbabwe.
lololo!! Are you kidding me with this racist crap early in the morning before I’ve even had coffee!!
“collapses due to black rule” – How many countries have failed due to, per your ignorant logic, “white rule” conversely???
Countries don’t fail because of the skin color of their leaders. But if you believe such, then consider the following: 1) Every American president – EVERY SINGLE ONE – prior to #44, has been white. Is that why America is in dire straits?? I guess so.
2) Greece’s leaders have all been white and it will be a miracle if they don’t wind up as a failed state in the next year.
3) Every single govt wrong that has been wrought upon the U.S. has been done so at the hands of greedy white men who didn’t give a rat’s ass about the cost of the accumulation of their wealth.
4) Many African countries were colonized by European countries who raped these nations of every single natural resource and many black African leaders have continued this legacy with the figurative and literal genocide of their own countrymen. And none of it has anything to do with color – it has everything to do with the greed and the love of money.
5) I take pleasure in knowing that you would never have the balls to utter such ignorance publicly.
and re this reality show…art and creativity have gone to hell and come back as a reality show. i don’t begrudge these women, but I’m so sick of reality shows. As an actor and a hiding writer, I just wonder about the future of our art. Networks are so lazy these days and I feel like the viewing public has been drugged into thinking these shows are worth watching.
ugh!
I grew up in the region and regularly visit so I can say with authority that your race baiting comment is baseless and speaks volumes of your utter lack of knowledge about South Africa’s socio-ecconomic climate.
So has this been SOLD to BET?
Not sure where this would be successful…..if anywhere.
So let me get this straight. They’re attempting to break away from the Mandela name by cashing in on it with a reality show? Um. Okay.
And somewhere in the same universe Ryan O’Neal is a decent father.
Nothing good can come of this.
It’s an interesting look into how they live-
lets hope they have jobs and actually do something
Could be interesting
I am most terrified that the Mandela family know who the Kardashians even are.
Damn…I hadn’t even thought about that…that actually is the scariest part of all this. ugh! Why!
Keeping up with the Kardafricans.
I will definitely watch. This is not anyone getting a show – of anyone, they are potentially worthy of it. Educated women of color. We have so few people of color on TV, I hope this is a good thing.
Are they going to kill the Kardashians
ians too?
